When does the season end, for you? Is it variable, or is there a date on your calendar that you honor?

I have to admit to stretching my season the past few years. By the middle of January, (and, it is the middle of January) I have usually wrapped it up after a long and arduous contest season. Typically, my last hunt would be the daylight hunt scheduled for sometime in January. But, I don't hunt very many contests any more. But, I still like to Whack 'em and stack 'em.

So, what motivate you? Are you flexible? Do you get tired of all that killing?

Your thoughts?

Good hunting. LB

I just turned 70 today, and I must admit that the excitement of the hunt is seriously waning. Having said that, let me also tell you that I call and kill coyotes whenever I feel like it. Coyote season is always open, and mild weather is best time for me. I have a question I would like to ask, and even though it is off topic, here it comes.------
Is Leonard a pin head or a Patriot?

Happy Birthday, you old fossil!

Pinhead or patriot? I'm reasonably sure it depends on who you ask. Now, what about Cronk?

Happy Bday Rich!

Sort of the end of February for me. Although right now Im concentrating on kitty cats instead of coyotes. Maybe a grey fox thrown in here and there.

BTW...I have slowed down and am taking it easy last few seasons, not getting hung up on numbers. Im trying to have fun at this, anymore,I dont relish the feeling that I have to go out and put a certain amount of fur in the truck to feel successful.

Happy B Day Mr. Cronk!!!

This is the second season a lot of our recreational callers have been figthing deep snow and limited ability to get even close to calling areas without some type of tracked vehicle. We have no plowed roads or trails in many areas so it shuts down a lot of people early. Even the dog hunters are almost shut down. So much for the recreational calling harvest or private trapper take.

Randy Roede,
I didn't think that you would let a little bit of snow stop ya. Getting a little soft are ya? [Wink]
We have been lucky here. We can still get through the fields with 4x4 pickups. Last year at this time, it was snow shoes or stay home.

The question for me is more like, when do I start. I bet I haven't shot more than a dozen coyotes this year, probably the worst year Ive had in 30 or more. My usual average is between 75-100, some years a few more, some a few less, but this one just has me doing to much stuff to get out as often I would have liked to.
Ive got maybe two more short hunts to go on, then it's time to quit, usually end of Feb Im done, or a weekend in early march.

80 degree temperatures are in the forecast for the next couple of days here and that takes some of the wind from my sails. However, I am participating in a couple of online contests that run into March, so I imagine I will keep at it to some degree until they wrap up.

Rich, I've got a trailer with a snowmobile behind everyday. leave the trailer at first light and find it again at dark. Cold SOB somedays but it's the only option. A lot of my country has nothing plowed to get close. I would still rather have the cold and snow than that 100 degree stuff!!

Putting together enough field time to support a dozen or more articles, coming up with new ideas to write about and following up on them enough to put them on paper takes a wee bit more time than what the average guy would think. LOL From mid-October to the end of February, calling is my second job, and bless my wife's heart for never complaining a bit.

It's mid-January, I'm behind on two deadlines with one of them due yesterday, my freezers are full of deer capes that need my attention for taxidermy, I have standing orders for calls that I'm not currently making, my business books and tax crap aren't even near ready to go to the accountant and burn out is slowly creeping up on me. Well, truthfully, burn out is right behind me whacking me on the head with a stick, but calling is an addiction - like smoking - and as much as I know what I need to be doing, I'd much rather be out in the snow killing stuff.

End of February and I'm very ready to take a break before spring pups start the phone ringing again.

Much like Vic , not a lot of hunts this year been a real wierd year for me. Havent killed enough coyotes this year to fill a pick- up.
Clint and I will hunt the White Mountain contest in Feb. and that will do it for me this year.

If I get the urge and have the time and resources we need to kill alot of coyotes in our antelope units up north and I will happily kill them till June. They are decimating the pronghorn population.

Mid Feb will do it for me.

3 more contests this season.

Snow goose season opens the Monday after my last contest. After that its all white geese. till end of March. Then onto turkeys!

I have never gotten tired of killing coyotes or most anything for that matter, but I generally stop calling come March except around the little antelope herd by my fort. They take a beating every spring and I along with the ADC guy that also works this area at least try to help them little speed goats out.
Happy birthday Rich.
This year has been a strange one for calling around here. Seems everywhere I go to call I find tracks in and out of all the places I do call. Mostly locals calling I suspect as we have a jillion coyote hunters that live here. And every year I come across some new guy with his Foxpro out to decimate our educated coyotes. And all this in a county that has less than 10,000 people in it out in the middle of no where.

Usually around the end of Feb. Sometimes a little bit earlier, sometimes a little bit later.

Snow was really kicking my ass the last couple times out. I hate shoveling that vile white stuff just to get the vehicle rolling again. I hate the crunchy noise it makes. I hate post holing every step I take. Older I get, the more I hate it, too. Could travel to escape it, but don't feel real motivated. It's getting close to Jeeping/exploring/camping/hiking season for me so if I take a multi-day trip right now, it would probably be to do that. So I might be pretty much done for this year already...

I will hang it up when the fur starts to degrade which usually starts around the end of January for my area but so far they aren't rubbing yet.

Posted by Nikonut (Member # 188) on January 18, 2011, 03:14 PM:

I've only been out a few times this year so "hanging it up" is kind of a misnomer...

Deer season just went out and it's 24hr now for coyote until mid February. Depending on how much snow we get between now and then will determine if I get out to hunt. Supposed to be around -2 tomorrow night with 3-5 more inches of snow. That should make for hungry coyotes!

Breeding season usually starts a little later here than on the western side anyway! [Big Grin] [Razz]

It is variable for me. How hard I go after them depends on the fur market. This year I didn't get started until mid November. Shaw and I killed 52 or so in 12 days. Half had mange and the rest avereged $10.35 on the cob. After Texas i'll be done for the season.

Good hunting.

Our Centerfire Deer season ended lst Saturday (I think) and our best calling is in the month ahead. I usually wrap it up at the end of Feb. may push it til mid march depending on the weather. Definately stop when Turkey season gets here. Can't do both.

Well, except for the fact that I myself have been using the 223Ackley, lately. With which, by the way, "Peanut Butter Man" didn't even wait to get back to the truck before telling me he wasn't impressed by the first runner I ever had with that cartridge. Me neither, next trip, I'm bringing more heat. Or, he may make me walk home!

edit: Please sing "Peanut Butter Man" to the same tune as "Watermelon Man". It's really catchy.

I got a 204 a couple of years ago and haven't hardly shot any coyotes with it untill this season. The gun is as accurate as any that I have ever owned and shoots the 39gr sierras at 3800fps. Ballisticly it is flatter shooting and does better in the wind than my swift. I like that but I miss the foot pounds. So far it has been killing everything even with some very marginal shots. I'll give it a fair chance and kill 100 with it before I release my verdict. LOL

It is irritating when people shoot a couple of coyotes here and there and think they have it all figured out.

Good hunting.

Q - I will be interested in your findings. I like to carry the 204 when there is a chance of a cat showing up. I find it lacking if you have to shoot coyotes over 300, but it could just be my shooting.

Happy birthday, Rich. Hope it finds you feeling better. As for hunting coyotes, I always start in late October and finish up around the end of March. Only exception being a call from a farmer with a problem having coyotes bother his livestock.

Anyone see the F-P hunting show with the "coyote doctors" tonight. 18 plus dakota coyotes and they could only call in one close enough for a shot with there F-P caller and sniped a second...
I heard the F-P was suppose to be better than the WT..It did'nt look like it tonight..LOL
They could also use some lessons on how to approach a stand...

But hey! they have a f-p E-caller and use AR's so they must be good...

I think he is being wise in holding judgement until he has a legitimate sample, and one hundred animals is more than fair.

On the other hand, I know a guy like Quinton misses those foot pounds and there are cartridges out there that can hold in the wind with a 204. I'm pretty sure of that.

Good hunting. LB

Shit Tim, those poor basterds were fallowing up VHA contest hunters and then some yard gnome looking dude from Minnesota. Give them a break would ya. LOL

The 204 has treated me well so far but I have only killed 2 or 3 close to 300 yards. One was a bit far back and he spun a little but went down with out needing a fallow up. I have had a couple spinners with good lung shots which makes me a little hesitant to use it at night in TX. If I am wanting 100 with it this season i'll have to use it down there. I'll probably give it a try but have my swift on stand by. LOL

Good hunting.

Well, you know what I think. I pretty much expect them to fall in their tracks.

Serious night hunting calls for at least 22-250AI performance. And, my Ackley outperforms both of my Swifts.

I`ve been hearing some good stuff about the 204 & a couple of concerns about long ranges from a few people too. Q, be sure to let us hear how it performs in TX. Good stuff.

Tim, help me out here buddy as I didnt attend the campout, answer a couple questions for me.

How long did you hunt at said campout in AZ.?

How many coyotes did you shoot?

What call did you use?

Would you say that the area of AZ. you hunted has a good population of coyotes?

Do you presently or have you ever traveled (around the WWW) giving miniature lectures on coyote hunting (and everything else)?

In light of these questions how do you feel you stack up against those FP boys now?

Do you now or have you ever slid a truck sideways on a gravel road while the engine screamed "screw you mister coyotee" and then took a 600 yd shot to impress "the crew"?

For the few who dont know already, TA is a celebrity. Click this link to see an interview with him. Coyotes & other important shit

Which time? I made 3 trips out there.
Second trip did'nt have a vehicle so I was stuck in camp..
On my first trip the area was new to me so I drove around one day checking things out. Made 2 stands with Shaw on second day and about 9 stands with Rich, Shaw on last day. We all took turns calling with hand calls. I don't remember all the details but I think Rich called in 5 coyotes total and I called in 4 coyotes. Shaws 3 stand drew a blank.. I shot two coyotes if its important for you to know...

My last trip I went out for 1 or 2 half days and saw only one coyote.. Les J., Shaw and one other called all day and got just one so I did'nt feel so badd..
Most of my time was in camp on all trips, spent time talking with Gerry Blair, The Maj., Vic, Tim B., Leonard, Tom, and a few others..

quote:
Would you say that the area of AZ. you hunted has a good population of coyotes?

The first campout had decent numbers, just had to be familar with the area to find the pockets.
The second and third camp-out was held farther up north and did'nt have alot of coyote sign around, at least in the areas I checked out for a short time.
Keep in mind also I had a rental vehicle on first and third trip, only so many places I could go. I did'nt want to damage it like Shaw and Jason did with there's.. [Wink]

quote:

Are you refering to the "Coyote Doctors" If so the film they had on TV was in there home court. Four guys standing on top of a ridge over looking the area and trying to pick a spot to make a stand is'nt going to get it done. As they showed in the film the coyotes new they where there.. I'd say I'm a few steps ahead of them.. [Big Grin] One of the guys did make a hell of a long shot...

quote:

Nope.. I like to slip into position unnoticed so if a coyote does come my way its comeing easey.. We try to do things a little different here and try not to get the coyote all worked up, makes the game easier.. I don't have to try to impress the guys I hunt with, they know I shoot pretty good and the same canbe said for them. I miss a few from time to time as well as the other guys, no big deal. We have one guy that takes a few 800 yd coyotes every season.
I wonder how many guys on this board can walk 2-4 miles a day on snow shoes...
I heard Andy tried it one time..Lmao [Big Grin]

Yep real funny stuff. I could of done the same to Shaw and Geordie. I've hunted with them some and could come up with the good shit, but good friends don't do that to each other, or atleast I don't.. [Roll Eyes]

I can walk your 2-4 miles a day on snowshoes Tim, no problem. Not on that thick snow either, but the uber-powder that you'll sink in with 36" shoes on. I'll even drag or carry the coyotes for you if you get too tired. I prefer to let the snowmachine do it for me though when I'm covering 200 plus miles, but I'll jump on the shoes and take off anytime anywhere.

You should`ve gotten rid of Rich & Randy, seems like they cost you some coyotes, they obviously dont know squat about hunting coyotes, at least not as much as you.

Just keep showing your ass Tim , nobody believes a word you say. You are oblivious to reality.

Why dont you convince a few of your "crew" to log onto the board so we can get to know them a little better. Of course you would just smile & twist their words into some sort of compliment.

Now, starting with Higgins showing you how to call them and Geordie and Randy showing you where to sit and Roade showing you how to hold that buckethead you are ready to tell the rest of us how it's done?

Geordie showed me nothing as well except he is a pretty darn good caller done south..
RShaw showed me how he handles difficult coyotes, his solution. Just take a shot at them and move on.
Roede showed me the important things I was takeing for granted. And to be honest I learned more from Randy and Scott than anyone else and the rest I figured out on my own...
As for my coyotes at home I'm gaining alot of ground, I had five called in and killed last season and this season I'm past a dozen and still have more to work on in the next month. I figured out my coyotes on my own no help from anyone... [Cool]
I can hunt them or call them, not alot of guys can do both.... [Big Grin]

As for the bucket you have me confused with Kelly, he is the only hunter I have seen with one on his head..Mustbe a southern thing. [Roll Eyes]

Edit to add: Leonard you've been to S.D. a few times, just as will make plans for another trip sometime. Since you like contests we could have one of our own. You do youre thing and I'll do mine and see what happens... [Big Grin]

Problem with some is they are natural born dick-heads and the rest just can;t handle it when someone is more successfull than them.
Never once in any of my post have I said that anyone has to hunt coyotes or call them the way I do, or they had to have a 17 pred. to get it done or even have a WT
for that matter.
As for my 17 pred. I have taken over 100 coyotes with it so dose'nt that make me qualified, and the same with my WT and hand calls????????

Don't feel too bad, Cal. Remember when I went up there, the plane tried to land twice, but turned around and went back to Denver, where I spent the night sleeping on the floor while some lady with a huge 4 wheel drive vacuum cleaner kept bumping into the back of the seats I was using as a pillow. I was lucky to get a flight the next day on a prop job with twelve seats.

Did I ever tell you about the weekend I spent in Evanston? The snow wasn't falling, clear skies, but it was still blowing sideways so you couldn't see squat and they closed all the roads in every direction. I'll never forget it! The main road through town was a parking lot. People were running out of gas while idling and trying to keep warm. I think some never lived to talk about it, R.I.P.

Good hunting. LB

Sorry LB, you must not have gotten the memo. We annexed Evanston into Utah years ago. Nobody from Wyoming wants anything to do with that place. That and Jackson Hole. The only thing there anymore is movie stars and mormons. Nothing personal against mormons.

TimTARD said: "I have mentioned it to some of them. They don't want anything to do with ass-holes hideing behind a key board...."

They obviously prefer to deal with them in person or they wouldn't spend a minute with you.

He then goes on to say: "Problem with some is they are natural born dick-heads and the rest just can;t handle it when someone is more successfull than them."

That statement would explain your abnormal tendency to try and "one-up" everyone on this board.

Well, when you figure him out completely, please let the rest of us know.

Tim has been to a couple of our campouts. Hardly says a word. Listens to the conversations but usually has little or nothing to add.

So, now that I think of it, I guess we could consider him as a Keyboard Commando, hiding behind his keyboard? lol Maybe that would be a good custom title?

By the way, check out his new sig. line? Get it?

Good hunting. LB

I was'nt there to teach, just to get all learned up on southern style calling.. [Big Grin]

Not having too much trouble figuring out coyotes, then again, I do consider them considerably more intelligent than Tim. The difference between the two is that coyotes seem worthwhile to figure out, Tim on the hand...

Sheez, back to the original topic... The cats are just now reaching full prime in my area and I would sure like to see a few $300-500 variety to end my season.

CatTracker, that reminds me, someone told me the other day that bobcat prices shot up here recently all the way to between $600.00 to $650.00 for big prime cats. Sure wish I had a few of them!
