Hey guys, finally got a chance to log on . Been too busy with my new job to do anything but eat, sleep and work. I hope everyone's well! I have a friend that offered to sell me a Remington model 7400 in .243 for $2oo.oo. It is in mint condition with less than a box of rounds put through it. Have any of you used one for coyotes. I was courious about their accuracy; being a two piece stock.

Go get it before he changes his mind! They may not be as accurate as some bolt guns, but they are good enough for shooting daylight coyotes. I much prefer ...wait a minute, what's a 7400? Doesn't matter, they are both decent coyote rifles. I think I know the difference between a 742 and a 760 but are you talkng about the pump model, or the semi auto?

Because you need a real tackdriver for western night hunting. Night hunting generally involves much longer ranges than daylight stands. At least where I have done the majority of my night hunting, Nevada Utah and California. By tackdriver, I actually mean benchrest accuracy potential except with much higher intensity cartridges.
I know the concept is difficult, viewed from the perspective of hunting from a tree stand with a shotgun in eastern woodland. There is very little similarity with California style hunting. This is precision hunting under difficult conditions. Nobody uses semi autos in this type of application.

thanks for the info leonard,I had never seen one other than this one. like 49 said it's simi-auto.When I first saw it I thought it was a pump like you were talking about; my uncle had one in 30-06 years ago,but when I saw the side of this one I thought I sure never new they made a semi-auto like this. Funny how coyote hunting differs by state. When were allowed to night hunt here(moonlight only), coyotes would come closer and faster at night.I thought it was fasinating when you said they hung out farther at night in california. think it's because of hunting pressure or because it's so open there. I've hunted western states but, never at night;guess one's never too old to learn huh.

The 7400 is the follow-on to the old 742, which superceded the older 740. All the aforementioned are semi-auto's. The pumps were the 760, succeeded by the 7600.

My father had a 760 or 742, I don't remember which model, that was stolen out of our house when we went on a trip to Florida when I was a kid. Stolen along with that was a German Mauser, a Colt 1911, a Luger, a Walther P38, and Lord knows what else that could have been mine today.

I had a similar burglary. I have told the story before but it happened on New Years Eve 1975. The event caused us to begin a search and New Years Eve 1976, we moved into our new house, this house, so there will be another anniversary in about three weeks.
Anyway, never saw any of the stuff again, EXCEPT for my Combat Commander which was taken from a Mexican down on the border and returned to me ten years later.
If you have the serial numbers entered in the National registry, it will always be there.
There's always hope.
Good hunting. LB

Ten years later? Wow...good story.
I wonder what the body count is on it.

Don't know, but the original Colt factory magazine was missing when I got it back. Now, I use 8 round Wilson mags anyway.
Yeah, if it could talk, it would have some stories to tell. It's what I carry, almost all the time. With a Glazer on top followed by a bunch of hardball.
