Some of you may have read this post on some other sites, but I wanted to share it with those that have not seen it.

I have been trying to get out and do some coyote calling, but I had to many excuses with the rains or else it was the wind. Finally earlier this summer, I went north of my home town, Pierre, SD to see if I could call up some coyotes. I have a genetic muscular disorder that has required the use of a wheelchair for my mobility since 2000. The following pics show an Ameristep #881, one man chair blind that we modified for use with my electric wheelchair.

 -      -

I selected an area north of Pierre that is closed to hunting, but I was using my camera. I had to go cross country with my electric wheelchair for about 1/4 mile was quite the challenge and chore. The area had a bottomland that was covered with trees and the upland grassy area had a few sparse trees that gave me a shady area for a call near sundown.

I howled with my Dakota Coyote Howler and waited my 2-3 minutes, but no answers. I howled again waited and then blew the rabbit distress screams with my Dakota Jack bite reed call. After which, coming out of the taller grass about 70 yards away there was a coyote:

 -

And then a second coyote was coming in behind, but I only got pics of the first coyote. As these calling stands go, I should have taken a few pics before I started, but of course I didn't.

 -

I was also using my sitting coyote decoy and this is what the coyote was looking at.

 -

As usual the coyote always has an escape route.

 -

Yes if this would have been an actual hunt with my rifle, there would be one less coyote.

The next time I attempt to get some more calling pics, I will set the camera to an 800 or 1600 ISO speed to get some sharper pics. A tripod or monopod would probably help also if I had more room to set one up within the blind.

Welcome to the New HuntmastersBBS.com, SD Howler. Glad to have you on board.

Thanks for the pics! You should be aware that we have another wheelchair member and maybe you can exchange a little info with him, if I give you his email, which I am sure is no secret and he would welcome the opportunity to talk with you.

Let me look up his info and I'll get back to ya.

Good hunting. LB

This is another guy that posted within ten minutes of receiving the approval email. Makes your head spin!

And, he asked questions of the questionaire:

Simple response is that computer generated registrations can't answer the questions with anything that makes sense, so it's very easy to screen, since I don't have state of the art optical charactor recognition softwear.

Good hunting. LB

edit: where's Lonny?

Great pics SD Howler and welcome. I've never tried much photography on called coyotes, but it seemed a heckuva lot harder than squeezing the trigger on a rifle.

Just so ya know SD, Lone Howl and I are actually the same person, but most of these guys haven't caught on yet. Leonard is getting close though [Wink]

Necessity being the mother of invention, I like your idea. It's inspiring to see guys like yourself and Ronnie overcoming the hurdles placed before you to continue hunting. Great pics and great story.

WElcome!

I like that blind a lot! Very nice for a one man setup. Can you manuever a 4wheeler?

I've always thought there should be someone doing a 4wheeler conversion to stick controls just for outdoor use like this. I have a friend here in Illinois that hunts all the time from his chair. He has help when he goes out, though.

We've been planning a predator hunt for quite a while but he got himself married instead last year!!! We may finally go later this Fall.

Thanks guys for all your comments. I am looking forward to participating with future threads on your page. I worked with the SD GF&P ADC Program from 1977-92 as a trapper and then took an office job in Pierre due to some health issues with my legs. I have been retired since 2007 and much of my spare time is spent working on predator calls. As many of you know, I make the Dakota Howler and Dakota Jack bite reed calls. My son-in-law and I also make some call lanyards.

My mobility has been restricted to a wheelchair since 2000 due to a genetic disorder that has effected my legs. I may not have been able to live out all my dreams and ambitions, but my past years have been a very full and happy life. However, my life is not over yet. I have a great deal of living to do whether I can walk or not. Just how I handle my disability is the answer I have to find? How much harder can this life be? As I have learned, it can be very difficult. Life must go on, I have to cope with my disability and keep a positive attitude. The only time we truly fail in life is when we do not try!
