I woke up this morning with my wifes ankle-biter (Cairn Terrier) making a strange sound in the living room. When I went out to see what was going on I saw a coyote standing in our backyard. By the time I grabbed a weapon, it was gone. Further investigation revealed that 3 of my chickens were breakfast for the coyote. So, would I be more likely to even the score this evening, or tomorrow morning. The neighbor is doing some tractor work in the tree farm next door (20 acres) so I dont expect to see anything while that is happening. I figure if I got up early and settled in I might have some action, maybe try a few calls... Any suggestions, or advice? Do you think it/they will come back for a second time?

I would about bet he will be back, if you have more chickens. Easy chicken buffets are hard to turn down.
Like Al said, chicken in distress will probably work wonders somewhere in the area. The Tyler Higgins famous, Monkey Fuckin a Chicken would probably be the berries, but I cant do that call to save my life. LOL

Depends on how many chickens you can spare & your level of skill. Bear in mind that that ankle biter is likely also on the menue.
A #3 Victor or a 220 Chicken might be more appropriate.

I have no idea what either of those are, I was just planning on setting up near my henhouse and doing attempted distress with some crow and turkey calls

Stik,
In general tractors aren't necesarily a threat to coyotes. Oscar, who lives up this way has killed a few from his tractor/mower (he works for WDFW maintaining the Wildlife Areas).
#3's and #220's are traps, Kokopelli is teasing us, since he's still pissed about the loss of thier use (from when he was a Washingtonian).
Try a staccato chicken type of sound, with your diaphragm turkey calls, or a closed reed predator call (which can be done by trilling your tongue "brrrrr-tuck a chuck"). Or the same type of cadence with a box call.
But just about any sound will do, if you have everything else right... hell give that hen squealer a shot!

I'm not real happy about the loss of traps here in Az. or Calif, either. Damn fool city voters that elect Obama & take away my rights.

No trapping in Arizona? Seriously?
I guess you could try choking a chicken. Choking your own is recommended, cause if you choke someone elses, people will talk. ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

Here in sunny Az. we can only set leg-hold traps on private land. On public land we can only use cage traps. This is what happens when voters get involved in Wildlife Management and an example of what will happen to Predator Calling if we aren't aware of our public image.
End of rant.

OOOOOOh, now I get it...
"has infield, needs outfielders"
Leonard is talking about my critter count. It took my wife to point that out. I said, "Oh yeah, now I get it! "When the baby is born, I'll have to post that we have a new 'middle fielder.'" She corrected me. I guess the dude is called "Center Field". LOL I'm the guy that always slid into first base you know!!! ![[Smile]](smile.gif) [ March 08, 2010, 05:54 PM: Message edited by: Locohead ]

Stik, the tractor activity will probably not deter or scare the coyote in any appreciable way.

My god, Danny! I thought you were born here? Normally if you are keeping score, the pitcher is #1, catcher is #2 and first base is 3, second is 4th and third base is #5. THE SHORTSTOP IS NUMBER SIX; Tinker to Evers to Chance, ya know? Google it. There will be a quiz.
Good hunting. LB

Si seņor. I wuz. My family has been in Colorado since the Southern part was still part of Mexico.
Here is an interesting thought for you 50 year olds. Imagine, just your life 3 times ago. 150 few short years ago and realize, almost all of the West was just barely being settled. 3 times the life of you 60 year olds and my state was populated by French & Spanish trappers & traders. Colorado and California had a handful of gold diggers. And Arapaho, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Navajo and many other tribes were our primary residents. Man our country is young!!!
Anyway, back to rationalizing...I started wrestling when I was 5 years old. I competed in both freestyle and collegiate styles (summer and winter) even a bit of Greco Roman too, all through high school. I even wrestled after high school in some open divisions. As a kid, I'd go out to recess and slide into first base. I super sucked at basketball but I did play football. I lost my interest in watching football when I realized hunting was more fun to do on the weekends.
I don't think I've ever watched an entire ball game on TV before but I have been to a few Rockies games. They are tons of fun, especially when they hit all those field goals! [ March 08, 2010, 09:22 PM: Message edited by: Locohead ]

I am pretty sure the tractor will keep the coyote away as it is a Christmas Tree farm and the guy is clearing the hill and burning slash within sight of my henhouse, besides it was a no-show today, I just let the chickens do their thing for awhile, then tried a few calls... Dropped the girls off at school then went back. Still have the rest of my chickens....
