My area seems to be getting more pressure this year and not seeing the numbers of years past but did manage to lay down a couple last week. A couple older dogs...

Welcome to The New Huntmasters, CatTracker.
Glad to have you on board.

Thanks for sharing the pics. That looks like good country.

Good hunting. LB

Test

Hey Leonard, isn't that rifle just like the one you were holding at the camp-out???

Hospitality influenced me to not comment on the black gun, koko. Also. If it's good enough for AR SHAW , it's good enough for anybody, right?

Shouldn't you be decorating your mancave instead of messing w/me?

I'll have you know, I actually killed a few coyotes with an AR, one day. Mebe I will tell you about it sometime.

Pay no attention, CatTracker.

Good hunting. LB

Actually, it's raining here in Paradise, so I'm trying to learn my way around this new 'puter with strong words & soon to be, stronger drink. Life was a whole lot simpler with WebTV, but the porn graphics have improved.

I laughed at Higgins when he had webtv. I figured you (also) would learn...eventually, but it's been a long haul.

Makes sense, it rained here a couple days ago, so your rain was scheduled. Njoy!

Beautiful country you have there. Nice coyotes too. A man can't beat that combination. I look forward to seeing more of your photo's.

Didn't realize I misspelled knock 'till I went back and looked at my post... What's the inside joke on black rifles? I didn't think much of them until I built mine from scratch and found it to be the most accurate rifle I own. I have a safe full of traditional hunting rifles but they don't get the work out as of late. Love my Evil Black Rifle!

I really like the terrain in the 2nd pic. What altitude?

I had one of them black rifles back before they were fashionable, then sold it for about 4x its' original purchase price when things got way stupid. Smiled all the way to the bank, but I do have to admit that I kinda miss that rifle.

I third it! Great looking country. I love that really cut up ground without all the thick cactus.

I know I've been rambling on about Dubois, WY a lot lately, there was a lot of country that looked like that! I'm dying to make the trip and try it.

CatTracker, don't worry about the grief some of these old timers give ya about your "evil BR", they're just old traditionalists that prefer wood over functionality! Some old dogs can't be learned new tricks! [Wink] [Big Grin]

Thanks for the compliments guys! My terrain varies quite a lot. Some areas are thick cholla cactus with sage/pinon mixed while others are more open.

JoeF:I believe my altitude is somewhere between 6500-7500'.

The (very old) joke is that the site Administrator here is not particularly fond of AR type gear. I can see how it would be confusing to a new guy, but it's nothing personal. But, we get a lot of back and forth ribbing about the subject.

Good hunting. LB

Tom,
There is still hope for LB. At the campout he was seen and even photographed fondling and pulling the triggers on not one, but three different AR’s.
Coarse this was on Saturday afternoon after he had spent all day Friday hunting with AR.
Who know what guns they were using when all by themselves…..?

I only hope that God does not strike you dead, Mr Jackson. What an outragious falsehood!

I used an AR one week end many years ago. I still am bothered by the trauma, prob should seek therapy, but what the hey? I think I killed two, maybe three coyotes with the evil gun? I don't recall either of them as bang/flop, but they WERE hit with the first shot. Just a little detail that they wouldn't stay down, requiring that valuable second, third and fourth shot, aimed at a spinning ball of fur. He's down...no, he's up, down, no wait a minute, he's getting up...where's the vitals? Oh well, center of mass should be good enough, right? And then he looked like he was killed by a posse. I kid you not; not a pretty sight, and I still can't get the scene and the carnage out of my mind. Brutal stuff, but hey, it was just a 223 with handloads, hardly enough for a tough criter like southwest coyotes.

Come on people, leave me alone! You know I run my electronic mouth about such things. Be polite to the new guy, have a heart!

Can we talk about something less controversial, like seventeen caliber, or Foxpro versus WT?

Good hunting. LB

PS, I think my problem was the triangle forearm? You guys probably never seen what I'm talking about, but they existed, in the early days. Not very cool looking, that's for sure.

The newer polymer tipped bullets (60gr V-Max) running along at 3200 fps puts them down the vast majority of the time the first time. Bullet technology has made marginal calibers much more capable in recent times than days of yore. The .223 Remington is not as devastating as the old 22-250 for sure but good enough for my work (dead is still dead). I'm not going to change anyone's mind so each to their own. In the mean time, that grin on my face will only get bigger each time I squeeze my trigger! [Smile] touché

Posted by TOM64 (Member # 561) on December 01, 2009, 04:58 PM:

Ya, I used to own an old A1 with the triangle hand guards Leonard. Even killed a few critters with it.

Don't worry about the therapy, your state has banned real AR's and they'd throw you in jail if you sought therapy with a registered full auto. Course you guys can smoke pot so there's the trade off... [Big Grin]

Cat tracker, just imagine a silverback gorilla holding an AR!!

I just remembered what happened to the third coyote. He went down, did a little fussing but I decided he was done and walked him up. That was my first mistake. He was licking his flank when I got close enough to see him and when he saw me, eyes wide as saucers, he got up and ran off like greased lightning. Two bounds and he was out of sight, never to be seen again. And, there I was, with a useless (& slung) machinegun. If I had had a reliable bolt gun, I'm sure, (first of all) he would have been dead, and dead coyotes don't run off very often. I've seen it happen, but it's rare. As anyone can see, I had ample reason to stack the machinegun in a cool dark place.

When Kelly handed me his black gun, asking me to check the trigger, it brought back a lot of stress; issues I had managed to suppress for many years. Thanks Kelly, I owe ya.

Good hunting. LB

Ya those bullets must behave differently coming out of an AR than they do out of a bolt gun.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 02, 2009, 08:13 AM:

Exactly! That's what I was thinking.

All kidding aside, they do. Just a bit here to operate the action, and then the shorter barrel, and the performance is not quite up there with a bolt gun. Or, is it? [Smile] Maybe terminal velocity has nothing to do with bullet performance?

Good hunting. LB

CatTracker, that's some beautiful country you have there. I envy you.

Leonard et al,

For some reason I can tolerate (or embrace) the use of AR's on predators and varmints. But I cannot warm up to the thought of using an AR platform on big game.

I don't know why....but the thought of taking a deer, elk, or sheep with an AR doesn't sit well with me.

To each his own though. And I will certainly support the rights of others to hunt as they please within legal means.

25 WSSM upper took this buck a couple of weeks ago. One shot just over 250 yards thru the shoulders. 100gr Nosler fell out on the far side when I pull his hide.

AR's like bolt guns have to be the right caliber for the task.

Scenario: You are pulled off to the side of the road, decked out in all your clean and pressed camo, get the AR out of the back and a mini van with a lady and three kids drives by. She speeds up a little and reaches for the cell phone, dials 911 and reports a suspicious charactor that looks like a terrorist with a very evil looking machinegun.

Check one:

1)never happen
2)possibility
3)likely
4)absolute certainty

We all have our own personal preferences and opinions. That's the great thing about this country....having the freedom to make your own choices.

I am just glad we have the opportunity to own the type of rifles we want.
What you hunt with is your business, and as I said I may not agree with someone else's choice but I certainly will support your right to make your own choice.

Heck here in Oklahoma, the soccer mom pulls over and says "you better not shoot my deer!" to which I reply "no ma'm I'm hunting coyotes" then she says "well then kill em all!" [Big Grin]

The above was almost a true story but my camo was not pressed.

Gotta love Oklahoma and the bantering that goes back and forth. Nobody listens to me anyway.

Scenario #2 (which I match):You are pulled off to the side of the road, decked out in your dirty worn out camo, with a two week old beard, get the $1200 AR out of your 22 year old pickup and a SUV full of yuppy tree huggers (lost in the wilderness looking for their cause) drive by. He/She speeds up a little and reaches for the cell phone, dials 911 only to discover they don't have cell coverage. Three days later, after Search & Rescue finds them, they proceed to tell local law enforcement, the Sierra Club, PETA and whoever will listen about a suspicious character that looks like a terrorist with a very evil looking machinegun. This scenario is one that I'm more likely to encounter.

By the way, the ranchers and local folk don't seem to be concerned at all by my evil black gun and that's just fine by me... carry on!

I can only imagine either scenerio occurring in NJ.

They would have SWAT Teams, helicopters, Arson/bomb units, and K 9's alerted. There would be Amber alerts and it would be all over the news not to go out until the condition red has passed.

I had an AR for a couple of years before I carried it on a stand. Was kinda worried about what the folks I hunted on might think.

The 2nd time out I had a county law officer waiting at my truck. At the time I was still fishing alot and my pickup had one of those hard tops on the back. Great for keeping rods and tackle out of sight. Anyway it seem this looked like the perfect rig to cook meth while rolling and he wanted to look inside. I opened it up and then he ask if that was a bushmaster I had slung on my back. I told him yes and he said man I got one just like it. Later in the year I was crossing the fence and the rancher I was hunting on drove up. He had to show me his brand new EBR.
I never looked back after that.
Ain't it great we can all shoot what we want.

I had a similar thing happen. I was going to Lubbock, TX to hunt with Ray England and had to tell him I used an AR most of the time and wondered if he minded me bringing it. He laughed and said he wondered how I was gonna react when I saw him hunting with his AR...

He was the one who introduced me to PM, before that (and I mean by about a month) I had found the original Coyote Gods website. All this time I thought calling coyotes was my best kept secret. See what the internet did.

Interesting! Been lookin at the following video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiHmYsyVniE

This video shows actual footage of hog eradication efforts.

Funny thing about this is the big bore boneheads would chastise you up one side and down the other for using a .223 to hunt hogs.

Well, I'm here to tell you these people are idiots. The .223 kills like the wrath of god with proper bullet choice.

I remember years ago I posted about some guy named Troy who took a record California Goldenbear with a 6.5 PPC. This was on a big game hunting forum. There was so much rancor for this guy using a 6.5PPC instead of a big game cartridge you would have thought the world had come to an end. It just goes to show these people don't know crap about ballistics. They're idiots

A high velocity .223 round will get the job done on most any game in North America. The trick is not to use a frangible varmint round to hunt the larger game. Some calibers can be too small....the .17 comes to mind for larger game for example.

The bottom line is the .223 is perfectly capable of taking larger game as long as the bullet is chosen correctly.

Just like P.O. Ackley said years ago..... the high velocity smaller calibers kill like the wrath of God!...... And he killed hundreds of animals throughout the west in his gov sponsored eradication efforts. In fact, many improved cartridges carry is name to this day..... Ackley improved! Geessus H Krist, even the Russians went with the AK-74 in recognition the higher velocities kill more efficiently. FYI
