3, 1, 55.
Three coyotes in one group killing chickens just off the edge of town, one single running the fencelines and coming across the Interstate to go shopping in my neighborhood. And, 55. Fifty-five grains of whoop ass for going shopping in my neighborhood and giving my poor little rat terrier nightmares, you son-of-a-so-and-so.
Tuesday night, I was at the local shop-o-rama picking up the last of the turkey day vittles when a local auctioneer cornered me near the ground beef. He was emphatic that I get to his 'hood and that I get there fast. Seems coyotes were having their way with his neighbor's free-range chickens and they felt that this needed to stop. Turns out, as the story goes, the chicken rancher actually witnessed, just last week, three coyotes bolt from a nearby stand of uncut milo and grab three chickens, almost as if the assault was choreographed or planned. Oh, the horror!
Well, as luck would have it, this massacre occurred only a short distance as the crows flies from my back fence, a fence of the chainlink variety inside which my beloved rat terrier and quasi-third child, Harley, does his bidness. And, as BAD luck would have it, Harley has been less and less inclined to do aforesaid bidness after the sun goes down because of things that go bump in the night. Just beyond that fence.
The tracks tell the tail.
Coyote!
Of course, someone like me can't be letting someones like them make things difficult for my homey, Harley, so with this new bit of intel, the race was on. Me or them. Mano a man.., er, coyote.
Yesterday morning, first light. Approaching from the west. No place to hide the ride and danged if he didn't show, took one look at the Jimmy and ran back into yon cover.
Two running away shots, 300+ yards, no hits. Damn!
Got up this morning to throw the turkey into the oven and gave hunting a thought. Bed was awfully comfortable, so "a thought" was all IT got, and IT lost. An hour later, things were different. I was up, wide awake and looking to kill something. I grabbed my gear, went to the OTHER side of the milo field where I could hide the truck better and made a half-mile jaunt to the side of a nondescript hill where I placed the Ultimate One before setting up fifty yards downwind of it.
At the three minute mark, I spotted a "something" three hundred yards away, give or take, looking out from the cover of the milo. Moments later, the coyote stepped out and looked to be the same color and size of the lucky bum that got away on a prayer yesterday. I kicked the deek on the caller in and switched sounds. Within the blink of an eye, his head snapped to and in he came. At 200 yards, he went low in a ravine and out of sight, so I sat up, repositioned the sticks where I anticipated he would reappear and waited.
It wasn't long. He burst into view at 150 yards quartering directly at the caller. I found him in the scope and centered the crosswires on his shoulder when he stopped to recon.
Boom!
WHOP!!!
Spinning around and around, he quickly unwound, and went down. For good.

Thanks, guys. I enjoy posting them because I can write the way I think here, which is something my editor's generally won't print. LOL I can't recall the last time I missed one and the first thing that came to mind was, "Gosh diddly darn it! That there was sure a lemon, so I guesss I'll have to make lemonade now."
I don't have the post-miss rant down to the same level as Q, but I'm doing better.

That dog bothering coyote looks like it may be rather dark colored. Was it or was it just the way the camera made it look?

Yes, he was dark on the back and fairly pale on the belly. We run from one extreme to the other around here. Just the other day, we scored a pair, one of which was as light as anything I ever took in Nebraska while the other was a dark roan with black all up the fronts of both forelgs and a belly that almost mocha colored. Ugly as all hell. I thought he was mangey as dark as he was. Imagine my surpise when I got to him and he had good hair, but it was all dark.

Q, you got the ones that cannot stand to let a coyote get away and those that shrug. The worst are the ones that laugh about it. Almost tempted to let that type walk home.
What do you mean by Fbomb? That word isn't censored, here. The only words you can't say are Xndian and Xeservation. Some sort of bug in the program?
