I shot a light colored female yesterday that I have been seeing around my place all summer. In the bino's she appeared to be almost yellow and one time I glassed her she looked to have four white socks.
After she was down I didn't find any white on her feet but she does have a white tip on her tail. There might be another litter mate around that also has white markings. How common are the white marking's on a coyote? I don't remember ever seeing a white tip on a tail before.
I have some photo's but I don't know how to post them. If some one will explain I'll add some pics.

White socks, shins and tips of tails are not entirely uncommon here. This recent 48 pound male had a white tip on his tail and white around his toes:

I killed this one last year with a white tipped tail, it was the first one I and several others recalled seeing.

White tips, following black, aren't that unusual around here either. I got two like that a week ago. But I'm not sure I've ever seen one with an all white tip with no black like the one above.

I think it's a bit interesting. Many years ago, (before gunpowder, etc.) we used to have wide open contests, members spreading out to four or five different states, depending on the format.
When everybody returned and flopped their kill, the only white tail coyotes came from southern Arizona, whether the hunters admitted it, or not. The other tell sign was a more diverse kill; grays, cats and coyotes. That, and the fur quality usually meant southern AZ. A truckload of nice coyotes meant northern Nevada, for instance.
That's another thing, years ago, I never saw a gray from anywhere in the state of Nevada, but maybe the past fifteen or twenty years, I have seen them. I don't mean that there was never a white tail coyote in Nevada, in the seventies, or any gray fox, either. But, I didn't see them. Just kit fox.
Now, a white tip is meaningless, I have seen them in a half a dozen western states, where once they were a rarity....in my experience.

Since I have one more hallpass to jump off topic...
In November of 2004 I harvested a decent buck about 100 mile north of my home. When I rolled him over to gut him: I noticed some peculiar markings on his belly and shins.
I have either triggered or guided hundreds of deer to their death... and I've seen one other deer marked like this buck. It was taken miles from the farm he was on- but concievably within the same gene pool. Has anyone ever seen markings like this?
The pictures don't show it well but the zebralike pinstripes went around the base of his tail and inside of his legs as well. He was a very heavy but young deer: his body was a good 12-14" longer than our average whitetail frame.
PS: Here he is next to a unique turkey.

Saw a coyote with a fairly large and prominent white tip on its tail near Newhall, CA in 1968. It was with a mate that had a black tipped tail, and the white tip was unusual enough that my wife and I both noticed it and remarked on it. We were having a picnic breakfast while watching the sun rise from atop the ridge east of town, that is now covered with houses.
The lightest coloured coyote I've ever seen was near Monte Lake in British Columbia, southeast of Kamloops. It was a prime female, a creamy off white with a trace of pale grey hairs marking legs. It's back looked like someone had sprinkled one light pass of black pepper over it, making the tips of a few guard hairs black. It was the finest fur I've seen on a coyote, silky fine diameter hairs, so thick the fur would not lay down, with a pale dusty rose pink underfur. We never should have sold it. It was a spot and stalk, and both of us bellied up on a ridge in snow and either of us could have made the shot at under 50 yards. My partner killed it.
We might start another thread on odd coloured animals. I killed a moose this Fall with white racing stripes on his ears.

I shot this short, but heavy female last january, and she had a heavy white tipped tail. The fur on this coyote, was very dense and luxurious, but for all the world, had the appearance of being clipped? The fur was quite short,as can be seen, but again, was very dense....odd old coyote.

Vic, speaking of throwing some gang signs. I contacted Rob K (littlesteviewonder) about tagging along on a hunt with him and he told me to get lost. He said I keep bad company and wasn't talking about the electric calling company I represent!
