I left the last coyote that the fur wasn't worth trying to save, in a tree, so I did the same with this one.
Man some of you guys and your calls are starting to blend together, I can't think of which call you have.

I got my deer, not too long after I got today's coyote, now I got nothing to do but chase more coyotes.
I really want to get me a bobcat, so I ain't goin' home, that's for sure.

So, the story on the coyote is...
It was a shot of opportunity. Heading up over the hill, I see a small bodied 4-point (5x5), that seems pushed, he spots me and hooks back, while I see if I can bend my trigger (because my saftey was on).
I tracked him through the brush and had a narrow window, in which to make a running shot.
*I want someone to invent and "emergency over-ride safety" for Mausers.
I know I had to have cranked down 15-20 pounds of pull, that's hard enough to consider "safe", for still hunting, ain't it?
...Anyhow, after the little buck runs off, not 30 seconds later, I see a coyote slink over the hill, not far from where the buck had come from, nose down on the trail, obviously engrosed in what the buck was doing.
Now that I was rolling "un-safe" I was able to get my rifle to fire.
Offhand (I know, "there's no excuse for shooting offhand"), like someone else had control of my hands, I snapped off a 60 yard shot, hitting him in front of the shoulder, mid low in the neck, on his right side, knocking him off his feet and down behind a log.
Somehow, again, like a reflex, I cycled another round into the chamber (in the process putting the empty case in my vest pocket), and watched his tail wave, over my re-mounted rifle.
Familairity with a firearm, to that level, is an awesome thing.
After about 20 seconds, his head lifts up once, and drops, and the next thing I see is him gaining his feet and bolting, away and quarting slightly right...
The second shot entered just behind the ribs, and his the far shoulder, pounding him into the ground, to stay, and pretty much emptying him out.
It was about as bitter-sweet as it gets, I was glad to have it done, and down, but it was a nice fur made worthless by way too much gun.

A couple years ago, when I got my first buck, Ronnie called it "Buckzilla".
Buckzilla was a runt...
...Compared to "The Bruiser"!
He was stuck in my Dad's camera, so I wasn't able to post it up the other day.
I have never been so glad to see a truck in my life, it was all I could do, to drag him, even going dowhnhill.
And I was even more glad, to have help... for the last couple hundred yards, and load it up.
That's Jim, on the right (he built my rifle, and we hunt out of his place), and my Dad on the left.
I got the coyote up by the little patch of blue sky, just over the backside, then sidehilled on up and around (headed for where I missed the coyote last year), and ran into the buck on the trail.
I saw the him first, but he nearly got the slip on me by going around the other side of a patch of currant brush and tangled slash wood, when I sat down so he wouldn't see me.
Then I heard a stick snap, uphill to my right, so I got up and moved up past some small jack pines, and then I saw the tips of his horns come up over the brush, and could see he was looking right at me.
When he raised his head up to get a better look, right when he got that "oh crap" look and his eyes got big, my rifle went off.
I had to fish the shot past some wood, and through the brush, but after passing on a similar shot last year, on a buck that could have been him, because I didn't know if the bullet would deflect... I had to find out.
One good test, is worth a thousand theories.
I was surprised to see him, so soon after shooting the coyote, but not nearly the surprise he got.
The low neck shot exitted just above his back, and dropped him in his tracks, 12 yards away from me.
I thought about the taxidermist, and a shoulder mount... for about twelve seconds, then decided on a skull cap mount, and saving $500.
Haven't gotten a measurement on the horns, and my Dad forgot the scale, but he was way on the far side of 200 pounds, with a tight tipped basket rack that should go 130" or so.

Krusty, Nice buck. I saw his brother before season, but it seems they're never where you left them.
After looking at that picture of your dad I think I've actually spoken to him. He sure looks familier. Maybe down at South Shores.

Yes! That's a dandy buck, especially for Washington. 12 yards, for a whitetail while hunting on the ground. That's up close and personal. Thanks for the story.
