Can they be called in? Does calling success depend upon what stage of the rabies they are in? Have you ever called or shot a rabid animal?

Well I don't know if they can be called in or not.
But after having to get rabies shots back in the 1983 I can tell you that if I even THINK an animal has rabies it is getting shot, then shot gain. Then I'm gonna reload and rinse and repeat as necessary. I see froth or wierd behavior and there won't be a coyote god on earth that could sew that pelt back together.

Heath,
I can't recall ever hearing of anyone calling an animal that was symptomatic with rabies, or any other disease whose symptoms appear similar as far as being stuporous, etc.. I've seen animals under normal settings that had rabies, as well as distemper. In every case, they seemed pretty much oblivious to our presence and I can't think they would respond appropriately to calling or anything else like a normal, healthy animal. As a rule, I operate under the belief that everything I kill is riddled with horrendous diseases and conduct myself accordingly (gloves, etc.).

Cdog is right; Hand condoms are great, if for no other reason than that they keep your hands clean.

I once had to trap some rabid fox for the State of Iowa, they where attacking staff at retirement home for nun's.
I found the sign and made normal sets they wouldn't work them well at all, I finally caught the 2 aggressive late stage ones in snares, both dead on 24 hr check with deer stop snares.Looked like total crap.
Late stage their brains are scattered and as others mentioned I don't know if they would work sounds like a healthy critter would?

On 2 instances i have seen what i believe to be rabid fox come to the call. Neither were tested so cant say positively. On the first occasion, the fox some how got away unscathed, which in its self is hard to believe, 3 days later a picnicker was attacked in the same area and they found out it was rabid.

Cdog,
I'm betting that it was a combination of the four.
He tried the first two, and when they discovered that he was out of cash those "Filthy disease carrying things" did the second two !

Tim and Lance, I only stood in the back and watched!!! I thought it was very degrading to women!!! They even had these little rooms in the back for private dances with a red curtain for a door, with some leather couches in them, with some dim lighting, along with a great Bud Light neon sign, that smelled, well let's say musky. I heard from somebody!!!

Yeah, I sat to one side and watched a bachelor party like that once. At least, that's the story I'm going with.

I dig a hole ( kind of like what Randy is doing for himself ) then throw in the suspect critter, add a little diesel fuel and a lit match.
