I made a trip to pierre S.D. this week to meet up with some pred. callers and to compete in the Mr. Coyote contest.. When i arrived at V.H. headquarters i got signed in and headed down to the shooting range where i met up with Randy Roede and some of the local pred. callers. Randy interduced me to a few of the guys and shortly after Randy Shaw showed up. We where standing around talking and a young coyote caller walks up to me and says hi my name is Les Johnson... WOW its the man himself!! I was honored to shake Les hand and very glad i got to meet him in person...Les introduced himself to the other guys as well and then we hung around the rest of the day and talked about coyotes and anything else that came to mind.. Les is a hell-of a nice guy and i hope others get a chance to meet him this fall at the camp out... Now onto the Mr coyote contest. The contest consist of mostly shooting and some calling is required if you want the extra points. The range had 5 steel targets that where numbered accordenly and a 6 th steel tartget that was a bonus target set at 600 yds. The five steel plates where set up at a hundred yards and scatted out to 300 yds. or a little more. The shooter had five seconds to take one shot at each taget and the range master drew the numbers for the order of the targets to be shot. After the five targets where shot at then the shooter had the choice to either shoot at the 600 for extra points or pass on it. If the shooter decided to take the shot and if he missed then points where deducted from his total score.
Next was the moveing coyote target, the shooter was to take two shots at it. He had the choice to take one shot and then reset target or he could take both shots at once.
The last shoot consisted of the use of a shotgun and some clay pigions that bounced along on the ground. The shooter had to shoot five i believe. One single and two sets of doubles.
To start the match each shooter had to blow on a rabbit call or howler to start the match, and for the running coyote and clays you could just give a voice bark or use youre hand call... Everyone that entered did very well and we all had a blast .. The rest of the day was spent talking with other hunters and looking over the goodies that the vendors had on display, anything from bullets to 4000.00 custom rifles... That evening we all met up at Randy Roede's house for BBQ's and some cold drinks. I got to meet Steve Thompson who is a retired trapper and a call maker and he also does a great job of modifieing the tone board on Randy Anderson howlers. Very nice guy and i also enjoyed talking with him. Jerry Hunsley also showed up and i met Jerry for the first time but have been useing his howlers for a few years. What i like the most about Steve and Jerry is they are always striveing to make there calls better sounding and easey for the avr. caller to use. Nothing fancy just a good working mans call !! Everyone had other plans for friday includeing me. After hanging out with a bunch of good callers i got the urge to go calling, so i headed for my stomping ground... I made my first stand at 9:00 A.M. and called in a tough looking male coyote in less than a minute. I was only going to take pic's but this coyote did'nt look so good so i put him down with the 17 pred.. After the shot i took a closer look and the coyote was missing most of its nose padd and one fang and the other teeth where worn pretty badd. I made 4 more stands and had a coyote on all but one. On my third stand i called up five coyotes with two comeing in to the 100 yard mark. I tried to get what pic's i could without burning out the coyotes cause i plan on comeing back this fall to call them again. My main goal was to do some calling and see whats out there for this season..
I will have some pic's tommorrow...
My thanks to Randy R. , Randy S. Jerry H. ,Steve T. and Les J.. A special thanks to Les for the fine gifts... I had a great time.....

That a boy TA!!!
Always great to gather up a bunch of callers and shoot the breeze.
Meeting people face to face and visiting with them for awhile vs. just over the internet is much more enjoyable!!
All are welcome anytime again!!

I got this information from another site:
I see on varmint hunters site Glen Jr won the limited open final with a score of 910 over John griswold's 885. In the open finals John and Glen Jr tied, I guess they are such good friends no shoot off? I don't know for sure how that works.

Thanks Leonard,
I've heard that Sterling is a damn good target(bench) shooter. RR, how does he do on hitting the real McCoys? I imagine that he might try a few long range shots?

Dennis, both John and Glen are very good callers.
Glen Jr. is one of our guys based out of Huron. He's as good as they get when it comes to killin coyotes. Long or short range with a call, traps or snares, has a decoy dog named Tex that is legendary, aerial gunning etc. etc.
Glen is kind of one of those guys that doesn't speak much but when he does you want to pay attention!!
Always willing to share and a true blue good guy.
His father Glen Sr. and himself the makers of the Sterling traps and numerous other pieces trapping equipment are topnotch.
The norm is finding Glen Jr. winning any of these shoots, just hanging around him makes you a better shooter. They take it to levels most don't even know exist.
We are very lucky to have both Jr. and another trapper by the name of Jack Alexander in this outfit to help us with our marksmanship. I've learned a ton from them!!! Not leaving Sr. out of this, only he's retired now, he also is a helluva shot etc.
Leonard you are right, John and Glen are good friends, John and Glen usually enter a calling contest or two doing very well. John won the Mr Coyote contest this year but had to miss the first day of shooting due to some work related issues. I am sure if you were to ask John he would tell ya that Glen has really helped in his developement as a caller and a shooter.

I don't know about that? That shot reminds me of Chile Rojo's Mexican wrestler's shoes in the Coyote Gods video.
Good hunting. LB

Rich H, doin well, more rain this year here than the last 5 or 6 combined. Makes for tall grass and hard to see coyotes and dogs. Wheat coming out as we speak to open up some areas to hunt. Seeing some real increases in the coyote numbers in some areas, business will be pickin up!!
Yea Tim had those shoes on when we went out, I was worried he was going to go runnin to the stand and leave me in the dust!!!!!! Something about a guy smokin cigs and wearing tennis shoes just doesn't seem right.

LOL guys. Hi Rich: How are you doing? "How come you don't write ?""
As far as the coyotes injuries 3 things come to mind.. The coyote may have gotten into a good scrap with another male coyote or badger or ranch dog. It could of had its mouth caught in a snare or it may have been hit by a 17 cal. bullet..

Paul: I hunted this same spot earlier and had 3 coyotes come in. Two where standing side-by-side when i shot... I was aiming for the coyote on the right and i ended up hitting and killing the one on the left. LOL Not sure what the bullet hit first, could of been a very small saplin or maybe i hit the coyote in the nose and bullet deflected off. I noticed a large cloud of fur in the air when bullet hit coyote and thats not normal for the 17... I don't know for sure just takeing a guess, it could of been kicked by a cow for all i know..
