No bang, flop, candid camera picture. He bled out and dissapeared.
But....
If only I had a tape recorder to record the vocalizations from 3 male coyotes, I would be rich! No... not Higgins, or Cronk... just plain Rich... lol
I waited thursday night until the coyotes started up with their roll call, as I've termed it. Then I lit up with three chirps. Well now... that was all it took. These 3 coyotes started lone howling, over and over and I do mean, over again. No barks, yips or yodels before, in between or after. Just non-stop howls.
So I went to the back door of my shack and chirped some more. 3 chirps, 1 chirp, 6 chirps and they followed in with their howls.
2 coyotes were considerably farther away than one was. So I went back up front and did a lone howl from my mad growl call and then went to chirping again. This all took place within 10 minutes.
Me chirping and them howling non-stop. And then here comes contestant number one. He spotted my decoy as I let out with a quick chirp. He started coming in a bit on the cautious side, but non the less, he came in.
I took aim and shot. Down he went and then right back up he got to going and headed down hill to the swamp ground. He was out of reach for any further shooting so I just watched him. He was getting slower with each step, setting down, licking his wound and then getting back up again.
Finally I watched him head to the small diversion ditch that we put in the swamp and lay down in the cold icy water. I thought, good... he'll be there in the morning and I'll go pick him up then.
Well, he laid there apparently long enough to numb his pain and clean the womb a little to not leave a blood trail that I could pick up on in the morning. He was gone. Either died under some rose thicket bush or he wasn't that badly shot.
Anyway... the reason for this story was just how wild these male coyotes went with this chirp this late in time. And... I've never heard them do non-stop howling like that ever! It was the coolest thing...
All I got was about a 1/2 pint of coyote blood but, I also got a whole new coyote sound to play with!
Go Chirp... and way to go Ronnie Robison... It was your she-howler that you made for Lohman that I was using!
also... I was using this same call, back the end of January in NY and I had a male coyote coming to the call when a female coyote starting chirping and called the male to her instead. She was closer.
Gawd I just love that call Ronnie!
I think we should rename it the Testosterone Chirp after hearing what it does to the male coyotes

Sheri. Not two minutes after we hung up, Scott D. called. He killed two males on two stands this afternoon using nothing but estrus chirps.
It is beginning to look like they don't work at all when there not used.
