On my way back from S.D. on the first trip i ran out of good weather so i decided to pass up calling an area on the east side of the state that looked like it held some good coyote numbers.
Randy R. and i talked about this area the other nite on chat, and i told him i did'nt get a chance to call it. For some reason i awoke early this A.M. and could not get back to sleep. I think the coyote Gods where calling me! LOL
I decided i would get up and see if i could find a coyote or two around home, as i drove down the road i realized we did'nt have anything for snow just a very lite dusting. Then what Randy R and i talked about popped into my head and figured hey why not! The drive was only a 1 1/2 hours to this area so i got on the black top and headed west. On the way out i called my friend that lives in this area and asked if she could get some places lined up for me to call, she said no problem and i said i would be there in a 1 1/2 hrs. The areas i was to hunt for today consisted of overgrown pastures a few sloughs and some big tree lines. I started with the tree lines that ran through some big sections first and called in a triple and got two of the three, then i had a few blank stands or had a couple coyotes that just got up and left. I also had a few that would not come in close enough do to traffic on nearbye roads and what not. I ended up carrying my 22-250 ackley for a few stands and took care of a couple that hung up around 250 yds or little more. We moved on to a real nice section with just minium mantaince around it and very little traffic. I picked up two more coyotes each came in seperate but from same section. Then things went cold for awhile and later in day i got a few more. I shot a total of seven coyotes and missed five and had a few that where'nt interested in getting shot at. According to my friend this area gets hunted alot by pick-up cowboys and not much calling is done as far as she new and i think she was right.. I told her i willbe back again next year and thanked her for her help and gave some business cards to her to give to some of the ranchers.. It was a good day and now its behind me and i can now prepare myself for the days ahead.. Good hunting... T./A.

Tim, sounds like you had a reasonable day...

if you were to upgrade that WT to a minaska you would do better... or get you some hand calls and a partner to blow them for you and the odds go up from there :}

Good luck. hopefully those 7 furs will buy the fuel and you and the gal a nice steak supper.
