Brent Rueb and I paired up this past weekend to hunt the Northeast KS Coyote Calling Challenge. The coyotes won. LOL We saw 8, and managed to turn in the only three that were shootable either because of distances, or "no hunting" signs. I did most of the calling and Brent drove the trigger for shots of 350, 85 and somewhere around 450 yards, give or take. The 85 yarder was a white bitch that we spotted at 400 yards. Brent and I were standing right out in the open in a wheat field and she couldn't see us because of the glare from the setting sun right behind us. We sat down and I ki-yi'd her to get her attention. She came in like a cat, walking slowly as I squeaked my coaxer bulb, and stopping if I did. Took me a good twenty minutes to get her from 400 to 85, but Brent wanted a "close shot" LOL On the way in, she stopped once and looked north, so we figured we had one more somewhere nearby. After we dumped Whitey, we scurried into the nearby fenceline and I stared calling. A coyote stood up out of sight from me but where Brent could see it, stepped out, looked toward us, then went back and sat down beneath a locust tree in the next pasture over. Brent whispered to me to start calling again, so I went at it on my AP-6 for a good five minutes before he finally shot, having decided she wasn't going to come on in. At the shot, I went into ki-yi's, then back to jack until I was about to lose consciousness. LOL Our best guess was she was approaching 450 yards away at the shot. When we went to get her, she still had two good legs and tried to run off. Brent didn't want to tear her up anymore, so he called me over to put her down with my .22 pistol. Only, she wouldn't sit still and ran from me, zigging and zagging through the prairie grass. After three clean misses, I finally chased her down and kicked her in the ass, flipping her over. When she landed, she turned on me and I finished her off. They don't always stop. LOL
Only saw one coyote Sunday morning and it was 800 yards away making for the next time zone. Oh well. Had fun. Finished 13th out of 84 teams. Even had a team made up of two young girls (17 and 20). They managed to kill a coyote, too! Winners won with 7 using the Minaska Bandit they bought at the Rules meeting Friday night, along with the new Lone Howler decoy from Flambeau. Both of these guys are very accomplsihed callers having won the Sportsman's Class at St. Francis, and the NEKSCCC last year.
Brent and me after just giving up.
Winners, Todd (L) and Tom Wilson (brothers)
Our ladies team..
Kara, on the left, won a Minaska Bandit at the final whing ding Sunday so they plan on being back next year with better equipment. LOL Watch out guys, these two may be contenders someday. They really had the place buzzing.
Had a good time.

CDog,
Sounds like you all had a blast! If so, then it was a great hunt!

Brent can just flat shoot. I have video of him making a one shot coyote kill off of his shooting sticks at over 500 paces.

Yep, Rich, that's a fact. That 6mm-284 is loaded to its limit, too. Damn that thing has a sharp "crack" to it.
I told him the same thing I told Q a few weeks ago in a conversation we were having - If I can pair up with a good shot, I'm one helluva lethal caller. LOL
In truth, I really like pairing up with a sharpshooter. Allows us to set up apart from one another and me do the calling, giving my gunner ample room and time to get the shot.
Brent killed 2.8 of those coyotes. I finished the second one off with a 3-foot putt from the .22. The judges refused to give me extra credit for kicking it in the ass first. ![[Frown]](frown.gif) [ January 30, 2008, 11:18 AM: Message edited by: Cdog911 ]
