I dont know how many of you all trap but thought I would share a few pic's. Kind of taking a winter off from filming as much and just doing some hunting and trapping. Thought you all might enjoy these.....
Nice little Red fox by both front feet, in a hay set.
Another nice little Red in a hay set...

Although I have long maintained that water trappers must have some kind of grudge against themselve's, it looks like you're having a blast. Thanx for the pics!!!

Brent, Great pictures. Thank you. Trapping pictures are always my favorites. It's cool to see the animals alive (not for long). But they do make cool pictures in their last few minutes. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Great pictures!
Looks like you are having a good winter,
But they sure made me think about how much I miss trapping beaver!
Do you still have lots of fox, or just pockets of them here and there?

Tim,
Its been a good season, the weather has played hell on us. Wet, wet and more wet has killed me along with the water rise and drop seems every two or three days. I got sick of re making sets every day for sure. We are just now getting some Beaver sets back that were under 8 feet of water from the last front that came threw.
We still got pockets of Fox, more Reds than Grays. On my log it shows 24 Reds and 20 Grays. But I targeted the Grays for the most part. Fur prices on the Reds is way down here, but the Grays are up.
I set a goal of 200 coons and reached it last Monday with 201. We had coons running every were here. Some of the areas I targeted had not been trapped sense I traped them several years ago. I did well on the Mink also but not as good as I wanted to.
And we got till the end of Feb for Beaver and Otter. Cold temps and Ice along with high water has made the first of the season slow. We were doin good on the Beaver till the water came up. I hope we can get a break in the weather so I can set for Otter. Never cought one! We are just now seeing signs of them here, but not allot. I got a couple good areas for Otter if I can get a break in the weather.
Cindy,
At the age of 16 its hard to get him to smile about anything...lol

Man I love and miss trapping. Great set of pictures.
What's up with the crossed eyes on that first fox? I can't look at the pic for more than a split second.
FWIW, I think the fox/coyote thing has come full circle in my part of Missouri. Through the 80's and 90's you could not find a fox of any flavor anywhere. Coyotes everywhere.
Mange was really terrible 8 or 10 years ago and it appears that the foxes have rebounded. I've killed several in the last couple of years, contrasted to hunting all of the 80's and 90's and not killing any.
I sure hate to see your son looking so glum, does he hunt and trap?

Its just the way I took the picture...lol
Fox populations have been up and down here as well. But if I want any chance of calling or trapping Fox here I haft to move into the sub divisions or close to populated areas. I get a few out in the county but most of the time Coyotes get them first. I lost several Fox to Coyotes this year already.
10 years ago I could go call 10 Gray fox in a night now im lucky if I can call 2 and those two will be close to urban areas.
The boy, he loves to trap, but at age 16 its real hard to get him to smile about anything..lol..And when he is looking at skinning 14 coons, cant say I blame him for the grim look...lol...But he gets paid for it! I still got him beat though. I skin two to his one! Not over the hill yet...lol

Good to see you posting again, Kee. That hay set for fox that you make has got me interested. Can you catch a coyote in one . Caught my first three coyotes this year and am always looking for something different for them. How do you make one of those hay sets?

Brent, I can see the prospect of 14 coons wiping the smile off your face - especially 14 wet, soggy, cold ones.
There are enough foxes now that I don't take my 22-250 back to Mo. anymore. I've resurrected my Hornet and 223.

Baldknobber,
Here is a pic of how the hay set is set up. I get a few Coyotes every year in this set and a few grays but more reds that anything......
Here is the tools you will need to use this set. Two traps, and I hook them togeather with a quick link. Two stakes, some straw and a hammer. I use straw instead of hay because of the deer. You will need some Red Fox pee as well. And you can change the set up with a little Rabbit fur and lure if you want.
Step one...A good location and all your tools....
Step two.... lay the traps out to the lgth you want them and use the hammer to pound the ground down to give a good solid bed for the trap, no wabble and this lets the pan of the trap lay level with the set Also now is the time to drive your crossed stakes in, this area has Coyotes as well so I double stake. I also added a little pete moss under the traps to keep them from freezing to the ground in cold temps the ground is wet here so this will help keep the traps from freezing down......
Next step is to add the hay, I put it right down the center and fan the ends. This leaves two little pockets on each side of the traps. Makes it easy for the Fox to work the set from the sides and thats what we want. On this set I took a stake and added two small holes on each side of the trap chains in the center. In one hole I put some rabbit fur and in the other a little lure. I then install my hay in the center. I then cover the traps with a little hay on each side, I break the hay up in smaller piece to keep the trap from clugging when it fires.I used some rabbit fur on top of the hay to add some looks and extra smell to the set. And last I add some Red Fox urine to the center! And its done!

Yep! He has to dry and clean the fur along with brushing it out before he can even skin them, I dont put up wet fur. But I will say he has hung in there like a champ! Been a good partner for me this year for sure! Some great times in the skinning shed and on the line this year, I know I enjoyed them!
And he has to, if I could get him to smile! Its the mornings I get him up and ask him why he is so sleepy and he says " I couldnt sleep " thinking about running the line! That makes my day!

LOL, I have a grump just like that one. We changed his name to "Google" because, after all, he knows everything. LOL He prefers to stay up all night, sleep all day, and give me dirty looks. On the other hand, he's old enough now that we occasionally (not enough it seems) find ourselves having true man to man talks and as frustrated as I sometimes get with him, I always am reminded what a grat spirit he has and how much I admire him for several things he has become that I simply am not. I guess if we can bring them along to be better at being then we are at those things we wish we weren't, we've done something right.

Brent, you're a good man and I'm sure that your son will turn out even better. Like Lance said, that's a good thing.
I do know one thing from personal experience - those memories of trapping will hang with that guy forever and will be some of his best and most cherished. He may not know that yet but I suspect that we both do. I love telling stories about time spent trapping with dad when I was around your son's age. The Saturday trips to the fur buyer's was the real cat's meow - a real hoot, as LB would say. The guy had one of those High Standard Charles Manson Ned Buntline pistols for sale for all of the years that I can remember going there. Dad would never buy it and to the best of my knowledge no one else did either. Man, I wanted that pistol bad.
Sure is great to watch them make a life for themselves. I helped raise one that is now a banker and we had his son's first birthday celebration today, another who is soon to be a doctor, and the late arrival that is currently 11 and one of the smartest guys I've met. I'm proud of 'em all.

I try and keep all the kids interested in the outdoors, even the girls. Hard to do when they are all teenagers. More important things to do I guess. But hopefully these things will stick with them as they grow older. And they can carry on the traditions when I am gone, or at least have some good memories.
My oldest girl 17 just done here science fair project on Predator Calling and Calls. We put a ton of work in it and the sorry teacher gave her a "D"! Sure pissed me off! The guy probly didn’t even know what a Predator call was till he read the report!

Seriously, that really makes me mad.
Anyway, P.S., the hay set descrition was really cool to read even for us Un-trappers. I really wish we could here in CO. I guess we can live trap but I've never tried it. I've subscribed to Fur-Fish-Game for years and years just because I love to read about trapping. I've wanted to ever since I was a boy.

Locohead,
It sure pissed me off as well! We put allot of work in that project! She even went calling, so she could write about what she found out about, spent allot of time in my shop taking notes and trying out calls. Reading articles, asking questions. She spent some time on it!
On the other hand! You know your welcome here anytime! And you have a place to stay and hot meals along with some good trapping land, traps, lure the hole works!! Just let me know when you will be here.

Well.....(Thinking out loud here) .......If she still has a copy of the science report handy, why not start a new thread & post it here?? It would likely get read by people who are actually qualified to judge such things and the replys could be printed out & handed to the 'teacher'.

You don't know the half of it, Danny. When I stayed at Brent's home I stayed in a warm comfortable bedroom upstairs. The last morning I came downstairs early and found Brent's lovely wife asleep on the couch and Brent was asleep on a cot in the back room. They had given me their bed ----- and tried to make sure I didn't know about it.
