Continuing...

Q and I ended up killing three coyotes on the CNG. Well, actually, that gamehog Q managed to kill three coyotes on the CNG. I was just about to light up a going away bitch when Q greedily dumped my coyote. I wasn't upset. Much.

Later, a small dog would make its last charge up a slowly sloping hillside to where Q sat. A true error in judgment on his part. The shot hit him so hard that it shot the prickly pear cacti seed poop right out his exhaust pipe, which led me to coin a new phrase that Q found to be quite delightful, "I'm so hungry that I could eat the cactus fruit smoothie outta a coyote's ass".

We were tired. We were thirsty. It sounded funny at the time.

Our third coyote was a dandy male that happened to jump out of the sage brush in front of us where Q put a good old Kansas race on him (When in Rome...) followed by an "okay" shot where he threaded a shot through a curtain of tree branches a couple hundred yards out resulting in a nearly clean kill.

At the end of the day, Q and I found Randy and Matt by driving the access roads honking our horn until they appeared over a distant hilltop. Randy pointed to us with his gun to make sure Matt knew where we were. At least, he assured us that his gesture was anything but a threat. Here they are happily coming to greet us and openly admit that we (Q) had finally beaten their paltry 2 coyote day all by himself.

 -

In this picture, Matt has eagerly stepped in to help with the wet work. At least, that's what they thought.

 -

In truth, Matt was getting even with them for their constant good natured ribbing by cutting the Achille's tendons in all four coyotes Q was skinning. At least, he acted innocent and naive enough.

Good looking coyotes for Kansas, exceptin' maybe that one from the dead pile which had all the hair scared off him by Q's long shot.

 -

Matt and I left the shortgrass prairie early Wednesday morning after a single stand where Randy called a big male coyote which Matt promptly blew the crap out of. I dropped Matt in Abilene, grabbed new clothes and made my way east for another one-day hunt in the Flint Hills of east central Kansas, an area characterized by large acreage rangeland with native tallgrass prairies. Rather than small sandhills with peaks a hundred yards apart, these are big hills that began as the bases of mountains with flat plateaued peaks often as much as a mile apart.

 -

Beautiful country, but we only saw one coyote and it wasn't interested in playing by our rules.

All in all, we had a good time, I called four counties in western Kansas, three counties in eastern Kansas today and will cal four counties in northcentral Kansas over the next three days.

The final score was 21 total coyotes killed of which only about 4 were mangy, and only about five that were seen but not shot. We expected more action, but tempered our disappointment with knowing that we were cold rolling through country none of us had ever seen before. The ranchers we were on came away very pleased with our efforts and the way in which we conducted ourselves, and were eager to extend an open invitation for down the line.

Next year... [Wink]
