Well all I can say is that I am hooked on this calling business. A complete excitement packed event and something new I can learn and make my hunting seasons extend basically year round, plus it is not that expensive.
Many of you will recognize the call I used on my first kill. Thanks Krusty!
Shot from a freshly planted grain field, spotted him at about 125 yards, did the little kissy mouth noise and wiggled my stuffed animal and got him in to about 25 yards, shot a couple a warning shots to get him up to speed and then dumped him at 45 yards to a cartwheel ending. I was pumped!
BTW I love the site here and have learned a bunch just reading old posts.
I live in Washington state a very advid waterfowl hunter, do some rifle big game. Grew up in Utah pretending I was a trapper, moved to the evergreen state about 20 years ago. I stay involved with consumptive user issues in our state. I instruct hunter safety courses, trying to give back a little and help young-ins on the right track. I am fortunante to be able to work outside doing what I love!

I am new on here to but the guys on this site really seem to know what they are doing. They will certainly shorten the curve for you.
Personnaly unless removing some problem type coyotes I'm not big on hunting year round. preparing fur for market can be very rewarding.

At it's best, that coyote has "no value" on the fur market.
Our local fur buyer refuses to buy western Washington coyotes, and the last guy I knew to sell one, got $2 (for one all put up).
Not much reward there.

Welcome to HM, Otto. Everything coyote can be totally addicting. Congratulations for you "first". It's a heck of a milestone.
Where in NW Wa. are you located? Do you call the same area as Krusty?
Many of us here call coyotes year round but most use a camera during the spring and summer to give the coyotes an opportunity to raise their pups. This is the subject of some very heated and sometimes entertaining debates.

I related the tale of Otto's first called coyote, in another thread.
He was able to call one, when he didn't have a gun, a week or so ago.
It's even more impressive to me that he did it again, so soon after the last one, and topped it off by "closing the deal".
Oh, and yes, I am totally green with envy.

I don't want to come off as a primadonna with regard to harvesting for fur. I was taught to view coyotes as a renewable resource when I was coming up. Over the years you get tired of selling them for ten or fifteen bucks. The last time I sold coyotes they offered twelve dollar avg. on thirty pelts. I " no saled" them then paid 14 bucks apiece to have them tanned and gave them all away.
Point being if I lived somewhere further north/west I would put up coyotes again. But until I move or prices come up I only kill coyotes around communities where I view them as a pest or even a threat. I simply can't waste a coyote or fox out in the wild.
I have no use for guys that kill nearly year long leaving a trail of coyotes, foxes, rabbits and anything else that comes along then brag about their totals at the end of the year. Just not what it's about for me.

winter or anytime virtually no value. I have killed many coyotes over the years all of them just opportunistic either from a duck blind or from the top of a tractor.. There are plenty up here and in my opinion a nuisance, they decimate waterfowl populations something fierce, did I mention I was an avid duck hunter? ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
Our fish and wildlife officers spend (waste) many hours attempting to subdue problem animals.
They also cause havic in my line of work and I got no problem making them fertilizer. If there was a market over here I would work the pelts, but there is not therefor they get dirt kicked on them.
alright, choke was the stock modified tube for the benelli nova, shot was either 00 buck in 2 3/4 and the heavy shot was a #3 in 3 1/2
and now for the reel it is a Penn 65 "Longbeach"

I didn't think you were coming off preachy, I wanted you to know this one wasn't worth the concern.
We have some of the best muskrat fur anywhere, and one of the worst coyotes.
Pretty much for the same reason.
It never really freezes up here, so muskrats stay out all winter in near freezing water, and coyotes never really "prime up" like they do everywhere else.
Maybe Rich can sort out what they're called, but I think he said we have two subspecies of coyote on this side of the state.
The mountain coyote, and the one Otto got, a pacific northwest coastal coyote.
The small coastal coyote has a short stiff greasy coat, and they don't "down up" much in winter.
We have a similar situation with the western red bobcat.
A small supply of sub quality fur, that's unlike the majority of the market, doesn't generate much interest or price.

I love the things & I'm not even a member of the Wacky Washington Arms Collectors so I can't buy a gun at the show. Probably saved thousands of dollars right there. Gadgets & Gizmos galore though, plus the BS is about knee deep. Cheap entertainment.

got number two today. Wasnt quite as textbook as the first but notched it up as a learning experience.
Did manage another incidental one off the back of a tractor........
Been about ten stands between the first and then the one today....Todays consitant westerly wind made it a bit easier....

When I finally KILL a called predator, nobody is going to ask, or care, what call I used to call the first one I DIDN'T KILL.
I bet it's the same case here, nobody (but you) cares if he called a coyote with a call you made first.
Personally I don't care if he uses the call I made, the one you made, or one from Wal*Mart, as long as he keeps doing well.

Rick, yes your call did get my first coyote to stick his head outa the woods. I am sure I will see my first black bear called in with it also.
