Cal, hope you don't mind the ? thought others might find this interesting.
Got called out this morning on a dead foal,colt or for some baby horse. This is the third one in a little over a month, I find that out today, they have ranged in age from 6-10 weeks old. This one was well and good Wed. , they found it yesterday half eaten coyote sign all around, the other two foal were in a different pasture about a mile to the west. This one this morning had been in the fence etc. not sure how that all played out, the coyotes had pulled it out and fed on it.
The coyotes were in the pasture to the west with the other horses, 3 adults, took the male let the other two walk no good shot opportunity, didn't use the dog today because he loves horses and I didn't have the collar with me. We will see what happens in the a.m. Got the den located etc. so it should work.
Just wonderin if you ever seen them take foals repeated in a small area like this, I talked to some of our long timers and they hadn't here,just curious. Thought lion possible when I first got it but no evidence of it and it was in a great place to find some.
The two other foals were taken from one mare the is partially crippled and the other is real old they get left behind from the herd when they start movin . The herd in that pasture has about 14 mares ,stallion, and a 4 foals, the other pasture has 4 mares, a stallion and one foal.
For now I have to believe it's coyotes. We'll see. Funny part was those three adult coyotes came right thru that herd of horses when I called them and not a one of those horses gave them even a second glance or any sign of concern.

Interesting, but puzzling? Never heard of something like that, before? And, those horses would have defended, if threatened. Grizz? Wolves? Lion would have drug it off and covered it. Weird deal.

very odd. Have they had any of the colts posted? You almost wonder if the horses are getting into some kind of noxious weed and passing it to the colts. probably not but its something to consider

Ok,got the female this a.m. that was paired with the male from yesterday, she came from the same direction through the same ravine to work the dog. I called from the same diection just 500 yards closer to where they came from.The third coyote hung way back and showed no interest while the female worked the dog. Found the den, pups were good sized and running around the hole and into a nearby wheatfield,gassed it, we'll see.

Yes Tim, I cut em and they were guilty, the last foal had not been fed on since Thurs. The producer found it on Fri. The territorial behavior, and the agression, even before the physical evidence had me 99 percent sure these were my coyotes. Nothing 100 percent with coyotes. I've had bellies full of calf and the killing continues.
