Leonard, you have a good eye. That dog does have quite a bit of coyote in it, like nearly 100%! JB, the recordings will appear right after a belt buckle with my brand on it shows up! (hows that for motivation?)

Cal, how do you make her howl. Nice looking animal. Just taking her with you has some merits. Nice post.

Cal; Will you elaborate on her a bit, I think we would all enjoy hearing about her. Behavior, is she calm, skittish? How is she around your other dogs and family. Didi you have her spayed or is she capable of breeding? Maybe a couple more photos also, I think that is way cool...amazing animal.

Even though she's never seen another coyote she still acts like one. She's really good around the family and really likes the kids, but don't like strangers or even strange vehicles. I keep her in a kennel most of the time. But let her out to play pretty much daily. She chases the barn cats and hunts bunnies. She is buddies with the kids Corgi but hates the rest of my dogs. She will pretty much howl any time you want. She will trigger from a voice howl, a howler, or just from the kids playing. I think she would be alot better to handle if I spent more time with her, but regardless they are nothing like a dog and I try not to treat her like one. She has never learned to lead from a leash and I have spent alot of time trying and we have the "whos the boss" discussion occasionally. She tests me regularly to see if I am still the Alpha. So far I am, but we have had some serious discussions. She never tests the kids or the wife. On that note I do know that coyotes can't bite nearly as hard as a dog, but they are far quicker.

How many generations has she been removed from an actual wild coyote?

jrb, she came from a den last year. Still had eyes closed when I got her. Raised her on a bottle and a cat which was nursing kittens. I had two, but one didn't make it.

CT - that is some motivation!
Worst thing about my shop is that it went from below 20 degrees for 3 months to above 80 the last couple weeks, makes it about 120 inside that black box. But, you are towards the top of the list. You know how supply and demand is, if I got things done right away, they wouldn't be worth as much.

Thanks; one more dumb question.
How would you describe the human influence spent on this coyote during the puppy stages of roughly 9 weeks to 3 months?
Occasional attention of a backyard pen? Constant affection of an indoor kennel? Only throwing food into a cage in the barn?
I'm trying to better understand because a friend is undertaking the same task with about a dozen pups right now. All have various stages of human interaction, wondering what he should expect?

I could never have a howler that doesn't go on a lanyard... I'll lose them in the field everytime.

Kokopelli,
She is howling because she knows that every time she howls on command that guy beside her smiles and gives her a cheese ball.
She likes cheese and has picked up a conditioned response in how to get more of what she likes.

'Conditioned response'
Hmmmmmm......... I wonder if that type of training would work on my lovely child bride wife of many years??
Probably not if I start raising coyotes.
