After eight long weeks in bed, and a few more teeth broken from muscle spasms I finally got to make a quick hunt.

Yesterday I got a call from my rancher that two Coyotes were in the south end of the hay field about a mile from my house. I grabbed the 243 my calls and range finder. Drove real slow to the south end of the hay field. Not a sign of a Coyote.

The hay cutter pointed to the North end of the field. I turned around and idled towards the North. Still no sign.

There is a pipeline maker that the weeds have made about a six foot circle around. I turned the truck side ways thinking they were laying in the ditch bank cover about twenty yards from the pipeline marker. The marker ranged 328 yards.

I put my pipe insulation on the window, and then laid the Howa on it. Four quick chirps and both Coyotes stepped out from behind the pipeline marker. They had this look like where did that big black truck come from. The smaller one headed slowly toward the ditch. The larger one just stood staring at me. Just as I placed the correct wire on the Burris on him he started walking off to join the other one.

Four more chirps and he turned and started walking slowly towards me. Got the Burris wire on him just as he turned sideways. I gave the 75 gr V- Max the go signal and was rewarded with that whop sound we all love. He was dead before God got the news. I did not see him in the fresh cut hay till I was within 25 yards of him.

On close inspection the V-Max entered about 1 1/2" from my aiming point. He went 39 pounds on my scale.

Sorry the story was so long, but it has been so long since I had a story, I had to milk it for all I could.

Slydog,
You made it back alive? Glad to hear that someone down in Florida didn't mistake you for a real turkey. [Smile] By the way, my wife loves the necklace you made for her. She won't take it off. Just this morning however, I saw her out in the yard waving a blanket over a smoldering pile of cottonwood coals. Smoke signals? Oh my gosh!

Chad, You must have a magic save for those chapped lips.

Still don't get it do ya.

Lets recap, Ronnie offers you one of his "She Howlers" you decline. Why?

I'll make it easy for you. I'll send you one of my "Lady D.I.E's" FREE, I'll even pay shipping, I offer my number (208) 841-5554 and I'll teach you the sound and then you go out and do your damnedest to prove me wrong... I've had too many callers who are having success with this sound to listen to your crap anymore.... Put up or stand down, either way I'm tired of your gas!

BTW I haven't released this call yet, only my Pro Staff and the guys involved in the study have them and I'm offering one to you free of charge, before you can buy one. All you have to do is say the word. Its up to you, do with it what you will.

Grandfather quote: "There are none so blind as those who will not see"

Its all on you now

Sly,

I NEVER said the sounds you make wouldn't work.Just don't believe it works necessarily for the same reasons you believe it does.Plain and Simple...

I really do appreciate the offer for your new call, just like I told Ronnie it really is appreciated..But if I ever were so inclined to use the "Estrus Chirp" I have no doubt that my "Wiley One" howler could make this Coveted sound. [Wink]

Chad,

I know what you continue to say but you sir are just dissagreing without seeing it for yourself. If you would use this sound with a little blind faith you would soon change your tune and we would not have to wast time bantering back and forth.

You talk to me like I'm some kind of fool, well sir I'm neither a fool nor would I waste my time and money if I didn't have faith in this sound. I have seen it work. I have people who are using this sound and having success with it and after using it they are starting to see what I have been saying all along.

The KEY to this SOUND is USING IT! Those who will not try it, Must be intimadated because they maybe don't understand it or maybe fear the unknown. I'm realy not sure but I would think anyone who needs numbers or wants to add to their arsonal and has an offer (2 Times) to add a new sound to the ol'bag of tricks but refuses must not want to kill more coyotes.

I just don't understand how someone can talk shit but not be willing to at least try it at no cost to themselfs.

I would be putting this "sound" to the test so I could know for myself. Thats just me. I want to see for myself not blindly follow someones elses lead.

BTW: This sound can be made on any howler but it ain't easy and you will not have the repeteability that either Ronnies or my call has.

I guess its easier to laugh than to learn.

just my thoughts

Slydog,
I think it would be a good idea to simply use the new sound as an "Ace in the hole", or the much needed "edge" if you will. There will always be unbelievers. Ever notice how many people used to laugh at Leonard's magic mist? Let em laugh I say.

Sly,

You tell me I'm blind!!!! Give me a break..Either you're blind or you can't read.I NEVER SAID THE SOUNDS YOU ARE MAKING WOULD NOT CALL COYOTES!!!! Just don't think you Know for sure why coyotes respond to the said sound.

I'm not going to get into another 5 page debate with you Sly about this it's not worth it.

Like Scott said at the very beginning of this whole mess, most of the time when people come out with a "new sound" it's because they have something to sell.I'm done with this so knock yourself out.Good Hunting Chad

I agree with UT caller, it sure as heck mat call coyotes but the wording would leave one confused?

It may at this time of year sound like a pup vocal or many other things but I bet with a den full of pups and the "stress" of raising them the last thing the female or male wants as this time of year is any talk of "esterous" kinds LOL [Big Grin] .

If it works great, we all have ace in the hole sounds.

Randy,

I really do like the Wiley One,I have called quite a few coyotes with it and they really seem to like the higher pitch sounds that this howler makes .I think I might have to order some of the new reeds from Jerry.I have also thought about getting the mini howler he just made too.

coyote whacker,

That was the point I was making.Kind of taking a little jab at the earlier comments from the previous threads that the "Estrus Chirp" was a "Demand for Breeding".The sound may work like a charm for calling coyotes but we really can't say for certain why the coyotes respond, especially if it is working after the breeding season is over.I believe if the sound works use it, but to sell the idea that it's because it plays on there breeding instinct is misleading.FWIW

Chad, you take your self to serious. I never said you are blind! What I said is:"Grandfather Quote, There are none so blind as those who will not see"
if this hit a vein I'm sorry but its not my problem, its yours....

It just seems to me that you would want to see for yourself, put to use a sound and see what you think is going on.... You guys that are still pissing and moaning about the name that Ronnie Robinson gave this sound are still not using the sound, if you were you would see that it is about sex, territory and Like I have said many times before its a inturnaly triggered responce. At certian times it may or may not be about any one element, or at other times it may be about all of them. If you use the sound you will find its hard to single out any one element or to exclude any either. Tell you what, you use the sound for 6 months, get caught up to the folks who are using it now, observe it for yourself and tell me the answer. I might be willing to listen to you then and your thoughts on the matter would carry some weight, Good or bad, but right now your opinion is just that, words with no backing. I know it works, I don't have to prove it to you and frankly I don't care what the hell you think.

Wise men change their minds, fools never do.

Let me know when you are ready to learn a new sound that will get responce that you have never seen before. Then we will see what you think they are responding to.

My offer stands

First off Sly, you expect me to believe that the quote about being blind wasn't directed at me,for my previous post?Your full of shit....

Second, how do you know I haven't used the "sound" you're speaking of?I never said I did or didn't use it.I just said you don't know why coyotes are responding to the sounds..AND YOU DON'T!!! Go back and read the previous threads, I mentioned hearing coyotes make a peeping/yipping sound over 4 years ago.And even asked Rich H. a question about it then, and nobody gave it even a second thought.(even 20tnt)lol

So don't tell me I have no experience with it...I just don't base a conclusion on VERY LIMITED EXPERIENCE.....

Look Chad,
You want to confuse the issue with your 4 year old question about yips and peeps thing..LOL the sound that Ronnie and I are making isn't a peep or a yip, in fact it has no coyote sound to it at all so Iknow you have no expieriance with the sound and therefore what you have to say about this sound is a joke and is without merrit.

You just keep blowing Wileys horn, you are getting good at it.

Edit: My thoughts are not conclusions just thoughts and untill you or someone else can disprove my thoughts with proof, then I will keep them as is.......

good day Chad

Sly:the sound that Ronnie and I are making isn't a peep or a yip, in fact it has no coyote sound to it at all

No coyote sound to it at all? Well how in the hell does a coyote know that the sound means it's a "Demand for Breeding" then?LOL

Chad, now you are twisting my words to your own agenda.

C:No coyote sound to it at all? Well how in the hell does a coyote know that the sound means it's a "Demand for Breeding" then?LOL

Let me clairify it for you. What I am saying is the sound has no coyote infliction in it. If your sound has coyote infliction in it its wrong. Everyone that I have talked to and heard their inishal attempt to make this sound wants to add coyote infliction to the sound.

Most want to make the coyote sulisitation yips sound because that is the sound that RA recorded and some others have heard it and are thinking it is the sound.

This sound is not like anyother sound I have heard made by a coyote and in fact I said in an earlier post that when I heard this sound the first time, Even I had no clue it was made by a coyote untill I saw the bitch make the sound. That was with the knowledge that Ronnie Had passed on to me and I had heard the sound from Ronnie's call. It still didn't regester untill I saw it because it don't sound like a coyote sound.

BTW I'm more notorious than ledgend but thanks. [Wink]

Sly you are really painting yourself into a corner.

So you are saying the coyote I heard make the peeps/yips made the wrong sound?According to who?You yourself said you have only heard this sound made by a coyote once. But you believe you are the authority.I said I heard a coyote make a series a peep/yip's during the mating season. That's it...I didn't read anything into it,didn't try to say it meant this or that.just asked a question about something I heard. That's it...I was not trying to SELL anything or change the calling world with a "new sound".

Sly:Let me clairify it for you. What I am saying is the sound has no coyote infliction in it. If your sound has coyote infliction in it its wrong. Everyone that I have talked to and heard their inishal attempt to make this sound wants to add coyote infliction to the sound.

So everyone is wrong but you? Based on ONE experience with hearing a actual coyote make the sound, you are an expert?Who's the joke and has no merit?LOL

Hope you sell a bunch of calls....

The best way would be to record your sound on the computer and paste it to this site for all to have a 5 second listen to? Most computers come with a mic correct?

Then more would know exactly what your talking about and see if the sound macthes with what your trying to say.

I still can't figure out just how you "Know" this sound is all about sex ( Slydog 5-20-07 10:08 PM )

Do only females in estrus respond? What is the reaction from a female not in season?

What about the males? Do they all show up with a woodie? That might work up North, but down here in cactus country, a coyote who runs around with his tallywhacker exposed, isn't going to want to do much breeding.

In order to own the illusion, and learn the illusion, you have to BUY the illusion.

Do you believe that uniformity actually matters? Have you ever attended a calling contest? Everyone's rendition of jackrabbit, cottontail and puppy distress sounds different. Coyotes still respond to the different sounds for whatever reason compells or solicits an approach from them at that particular time. Coyotes ,BTW, sound very different as well. Cal Taylor's "Goin' to the Dogs" video has some great clips of coyotes threat bark-howling that are completely, totally different in sound. They get their point across to the objects of their attention regardless. I'm kinda surprised that Scott thought that the difference in sound production mattered.

Rich,

I think that's the point...How can one person make the WRONG sound and another person make the RIGHT sound, when we really don't know why the coyote is responding to begin with.If it works use it...But to say "this is the correct way to use the Estrus Chirp, and this is the wrong way" is ridiculous.

Personally I believe coyote vocalizations are not so much the sound ,but the feeling or attitude with which they are made under changing circumstances.

I think many sounds have been humanly explained and catorgorized to be complex things that are not. I think different coyotes making the same vocalizations mean different things.

I believe the chirp or whatever you want to call it is a valid sound in a coyotes world meaning something different in breeding season, and something in all the other seasons, each accordingly. I think it maybe is nonthreatening vocalization that may simulate a hunting, gathering mood in coyotes outside of the breeding season. Although I have not heard Sly's chirp, I have heard the mating yips off pairs in the wild, during breeding season and in coyotes hunting in high vegation chasing prey, around dens in the summer, similar sounds, maybe not exact but similar. My border collie will make a similar sound when he gets in a good chase right on the tail of a coyote, similar!

I guess I am always trying to relate actions to myself like if I am outside and my wife says honey come in and eat and I blow it off and 15 minutes later she says HONEY come and eat, and I blow her off and 30 minutes later she says HONEY COME AND EAT!!!!!!! she said the same thing but the meaning is much different.

I guess I have heard to many so called warning howls which some say just pack up and go home you won't call them in, get killed. Heard some of the best male howls turn into young females and some of the whimpyest howls turn into old male dogs. I made these assumptions based on what I thought was correct, it's just not that black and white I'm sure many of you have heard and seen the same. You have to , if your like me see it to believe it!

Whoevers chirp like Cronk stated is another weapon to TRY,why not?

Randy Roede,
Your explaination of various coyote vocalizations is the best real world explanation that I have yet seen. You obviously have a better understanding on this subject than most men ever will have. Thanks for sharing that wisdom.

He works offshore and I hope to do it when he comes in. I had a terrible reaction to the medicine from when I broke the tooth. Judy had to take last night off, because I feel a couple of times. She also came in just as I passed out and set the bed covers on fire.

I will post the sound card as soon as possible.

REM-17 I do not remember you calling me. If you called in the last two days the howling you herd came from me. Not the She Howler.

Steve whats the story with that pic. was going to ask earlier?

Is that your truck, someone going by?

Yes Randy. It was a cowboy driving by why Goerdie(crossJ) and I was filming him trying to get some kind of response. This cowboy drove by twice with in yards and the coyote didnt think twice. This cowboy is known by goerdie and does shoot from the truck. Very intresting film. As soon as the cowboy got done feeding the coyote went to the cattle to scrounge. I figured i would get the cowboy shooting the coyote.

That was a very interesting day. That coyote had apparently 'patterned' my buddy.
Because of their location along the feed route, most cattle around here are fed at roughly the same time everyday. This coyote watched the truck enter the feed grounds, waited in the same location till the truck left, and then made his way toward the feeding area.
Steve, I need a copy of that clip, my friend still doesnt believe he was that close.

Just razzin ya TA. That was too easy to pass up and old habits die hard. [Smile]

As for the instruction, your probably right? Im sure Scotts a fine teacher and a fine feller.

But for my money, I would go to the campouts. I like the social part. And, Ive only been to one of Leonards so far, but that was the 4th "campout" I have been to. I got to hunt two whole weeks with Norm Johnson. One week with Blaine Eddy. A morning with Rich Higgins. A day and a half with Tyler Higgins.

I wouldnt call that too bad of a learning experience?

Oh, and I got to make alot of friends I will have forever around the campfire to boot. Thats probably the best part.

Blaine is a terrific guy and a coyote killin machine.

We didnt kill that many coyotes. It was his first time in AZ and my 3rd. I half assed knew the area. We did ok. We were surprised at how close our calling styles were. Kinda kewl. One big difference was if the coyote even paused at 200 yards, I would try and coax, he killed the bastards. lol

One I got a kick out of in particular. He stopped at 200+, but everything was right and I knew within reason it was going to come on. Then it tipped over. Blaine got up apologizing that he didnt mean to shoot it out from in front of me but he didnt know if I saw it. I was laughing cause I was gonna get him inside 100.

I had a blast huntin with him. Except when we got stuck in a wash. I was puttin rocks under a tire and fell back into a prickly pear. He was laughin at me trying to get em out and took over my job. Then he fell in the damned thing. [Big Grin]

Well I have to agree with Scott. None of us sound alike.

Maybe when the pups are weaned. We could all gather some place and do our renditions for the Coyotes. That should be fun.

Well some of us are trying, and some bitching. I have to wonder how many were standing around the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria bitching, and how many actually carrying boards.

But I have never said that the sounds you guys are making wouldn't work.In fact I'm sure they do.The only thing I have said and will continue to say until it can be "PROVEN" is you don't know why they are responding.Especially when you just said that they don't have the same sound, with four different callers. But to say it is for Breeding/territorial purposes is a guess at best.Hell,Rich's sounds like a few rodent/prarie dog chirps I have on my Foxpro.LOL

Is that “prick” enough for you? LOL!

Sly (to Chad): “I've had too many callers who are having success with this sound to listen to your crap anymore.... Put up or stand down, either way I'm tired of your gas!”

Sly, do you know what a “straw man” argument is? It’s when the issue is “why coyotes respond to this sound” and “whether this sound is any more effective than more commonly used sounds” and you keep arguing with yourself about the effectiveness of this sound. You set up your straw man argument and then you knock it down but nobody is buying your diversion because Chad and I have repeatedly told everyone that the issue was never whether this sound would achieve a degree of success.

You can’t present a reasonable argument on why you believe coyotes respond to this sound based on actual observations. You can’t present a reasonable argument on why you believe this sound is any more effective than more commonly used sounds. Based on that, you set up your straw man argument (“that coyotes do respond”) and argue with yourself. You sir are a dandy!

Sly: “I'm realy not sure but I would think anyone who needs numbers or wants to add to their arsonal and has an offer (2 Times) to add a new sound to the ol'bag of tricks but refuses must not want to kill more coyotes.”

Sly, I’ll bet you that the vocalizations I am currently using will achieve a higher degree of success in most situations than this so called “BIG BIRD CHIRP”. Name your bet.

I’m fortunate to be able to call in an area where I not only get to observe what works but I also get to observe what doesn’t work based on our cover/habitat in most calling situations.

I can say with all the confidence in the world that I will be hard pressed to improve upon what I am currently using.

To quote an infamous coyote call salesmen, “I’m tired of your gas”.

Sly: “You guys that are still pissing and moaning about the name that Ronnie Robinson gave this sound are still not using the sound, if you were you would see that it is about sex, territory and Like I have said many times before its a inturnaly triggered responce. I know it works, I don't have to prove it to you and frankly I don't care what the hell you think.”

You don’t have a clue why they respond. You only know that they do respond which is why you can’t even keep your stories straight. First you say it’s about sex, territory, or an internally triggered response. Then you say at certain times it may or may not be about any one element or at other times it may be about all of them. Then you say if you use the sound you will find that it’s hard to single out any one element or to exclude any either.

TRANSLATION: I, SLY, DON’T HAVE A CLUE WHY COYOTES RESPOND TO THIS SOUND!

Coyotes respond to this sound. Leave it at that. Trying to express an opinion on why they respond without some logical observation to back it only makes you look like a fool to anyone who didn’t fall off the coyote calling turnip wagon yesterday.

Sly: “the sound that Ronnie and I are making isn't a peep or a yip, in fact it has no coyote sound to it at all so I know you have no expieriance with the sound and therefore what you have to say about this sound is a joke and is without merit”.

Sly: “What I am saying is the sound has no coyote infliction in it. If your sound has coyote infliction in it its wrong. Everyone that I have talked to and heard their inishal attempt to make this sound wants to add coyote infliction to the sound.”

Sly: “Most want to make the coyote sulisitation yips sound because that is the sound that RA recorded and some others have heard it and are thinking it is the sound.”

Hahaha! Let me see if I have this correct. First you say YOU BELIEVE this sound is about sex, territory, and an internally triggered response but then you say it has no coyote sound to it at all and no coyote infliction in it???

Ahh……………………….ok?

What would a coyote be interested in breeding if not another coyote?

I’m sure that contradiction will be puzzling scientists for years.

More importantly Sly, who are you to say that a coyote sound that doesn’t have WHAT YOU BELIEVE TO BE coyote infliction in it is wrong? If any sound calls coyotes, IT’S RIGHT, PERIOD! Any sound that calls coyotes doesn’t have to meet your approval or anyone else’s approval. If it works, it works, PERIOD!

Based on my experience, I think coyotes respond to this sound because they believe another coyote let out a big “YIP” after they pinched off a hell of big turd and they’re curious as to why this particular coyotes is eating so good. That’s my opinion and I’ll bet it’s just as valid as yours.

Rich C: “Would you guys believe me if I told you that Wiley has called and killed 73 alpha coyotes already this spring? How about if I also told you that he did all that with a rifle and the estrus chirps?”

No, I wouldn’t believe that Rich C. but I would believe that there is some here that would LIKE TO BELIEVE that I WOULD tell a story like that.

The truth is, I haven’t had a lot of coyotes to work this year due to mange and the accompanying reduction in complaints. At the same time, I’ve never achieved a higher level of success than I have recently despite lower populations due to mange and an obvious increase in educated coyotes due to an increase in calling pressure (coyote calling contests all winter long).

Rich H: “Do you believe that uniformity actually matters? Have you ever attended a calling contest? Everyone's rendition of jackrabbit, cottontail and puppy distress sounds different. Coyotes still respond to the different sounds for whatever reason compells or solicits an approach from them at that particular time. Coyotes ,BTW, sound very different as well. Cal Taylor's "Goin' to the Dogs" video has some great clips of coyotes threat bark-howling that are completely, totally different in sound. They get their point across to the objects of their attention regardless. I'm kinda surprised that Scott thought that the difference in sound production mattered.”

I have no idea how you could reach that conclusion Rich H., as being my point, based on anything I wrote. You missed the point by a mile I just don’t know whether it was intentional or not. The point was not that different renditions of the same sound can’t achieve success. The point was that if 4 guys can’t agree on what this sound should sound like, how the hell can anyone reach a conclusion on why coyotes are responding to it or why they believe it’s any better than other more common vocalizations. That was the point.

Geez Rich, give me a little credit. After 30+ years of calling coyotes with many different guys, I would certainly think that unless I was living in a vacuum, I’d have at least come to the conclusion that certain sound duplications do not have to be the same to achieve success. Sheeesh! I’ve heard the worst howl in the world TO MY EARS by one man in particular reach a level of success that would be the envy of most callers but thanks for the tip! LOL!

Seriously, I think Higgy just saw the opportunity to lob an empty grenade and took it.

“YOU TOOK IT, AND BROKE A MAJOR RULE OF ENGAGEMENT…… (Top Gun)”

Randy R: “I think many sounds have been humanly explained and catorgorized to be complex things that are not. I think different coyotes making the same vocalizations mean different things.”

I think different coyotes making the same vocalizations FROM A COYOTE’S PERSPECTIVE mean the same thing. If they didn’t, the coyote world would be quite chaotic wouldn’t it?

Since coyotes can’t talk, both of our opinions would have merit wouldn’t they? LOL!

Randy R: “I believe the chirp or whatever you want to call it is a valid sound in a coyotes world meaning something different in breeding season, and something in all the other seasons, each accordingly. I think it maybe is nonthreatening vocalization that may simulate a hunting, gathering mood in coyotes outside of the breeding season.”

How could you come to a conclusion on this sound, WHEN DUPLICATED BY A HUMAN, when you hadn’t heard the duplication of this sound until some of these guys posted their recordings? No wonder you are trading computer assistance for FREE RIDES. LOL!

One man’s “estrus chirp” might very well be another man’s “turd pinch yelp” from a coyote’s perspective.

I have no idea why coyotes would respond to this sound or what they might believe they are hearing nor would I ever try to pretend that I did because this sound is not a frequently used vocalization or those of us who live with coyotes would have heard it many times.

My theories on coyotes have been proven wrong too many times by coyotes themselves to speculate on the reasons for response to a rare sound.

Tim: “You are right about Scott Huber, In person he's a hell of a great guy.

But he's a prick when he logs on as Wiley.”

A prick must be defined as someone who is not a mindless head nodding lemming who agrees with everything everyone says just to fit in. Come to think of it, I guess being able to think for myself has elevated me to “prick” status on more than one occasion. There are those who make things happen, those who evaluate and criticize those who make things happen, and those who wonder what happened. Prick it is!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

For the record, when Tim B. is not wearing his forum police badge, continually evaluating posts and posters while believing anyone really cares what his opinion of others is, he’s a hell of great guy too. LOL!

Like you I saw "bullshit", and part of not being blind, is realizing I am just not qualified to call it.

Thanks.

"Turd pinch yelp"... [Big Grin]

I got dragged into that whole she howler/chirp thing, I made a couple calls (replicas of Ronnie's prototype) and without ever hearing the sound.

It does not sound AT ALL like I imagined.

It's a lot easier to make calls, when you're not trying to "sell" a sound (or a call).
