How does it sound? Is it like a high pitched bark,or a high pitched bark that is run into a very, very short high pitched howl, that ends high or sharp similar to a challenge? All I've seen is short brisk vocalization, anyone here use it or know what it's suppose to sound like?

Rich Higgins has some information regarding those chirps, but I don't know if he is ready to share it or not. In the meantime, just plain old lone howls will get the job done for you. [Wink]

Rich, I read a reference to it in the winter issue of Predator Hunting magazine.I worked on a fox farm for 9 years, and worked alot with the breeding, both AI and poly, and noticed a sound that fox did during the breeding season, and wondered if it was much different, fox made like an auk, auk, auk sound.

blakyote,
I believe there probably is a sound that female coyotes sometimes make when in estrus. Mr. Higgins wouldn't lie about something like that. At this time, I don't know whether or not the sound would be helpful in calling coyotes. Having said that, I still would like to hear a recording of the sound. A guy can never learn too much about coyotes.

The only video recording that I am aware of, is one of Randy Andersons videos that shows two coyotes in the distance, and it looks as if a male is courting a female and she does a series of short hi pitched yips. The yips are of a single pitch and go such as yip..yip...yip..........a several second pause and then agian yip..yip..yip.........and a again a several second pause yip..yip..yip.
I've only witnessed this once in the wild. I've used the sound late in Feb. and called in coyotes with the yips alone, no other sound used!

I guess you can never know enough about coyotes.I thought it might be a good sound on a hung up coyote during the breeding season.Or around here in alot of timber during the breeding season or pre-rut season so to speak, using it before I leave my stand to maybe pull in those ones you don't see because of the terrain.

TRnCO,
When you locate the title of that particular video, could you let us know what it is? Thanks in advance.

Last night around 1130, I heard some coyote[s]atleast two. Were carrying on across the highway, short howling, yipping/yapping. Heard them for around 15 minutes on & off.

After this, then quiet. Then I heard the following;

A quick deep short bark, sounded like the word "ROT". This bark was simultaneously followed by a quicker high pitched squeel/yip. This squeel/yip sounded, just like the very tip of a CRITR' call Pee-Wee to me.

I've never heard this before.

Rich, I think it's on the Predator or Prey video. I don't have a copy of it right now, loaned it out and haven't gotten it back. But I beleive that is the video that has that footage!

Varmit hunter, made a call for Lohman specifically for the estrus chirps. The She Howler. Last year I made the mistake of calling it a gimic. Ronnie set me straight and was gracious enough to send me one. It is in fact a great call and makes some really good prey distress and pup whines as well. LOUD for such a small call and has a good all around sound. I recorded the chirps from the video TR is talking about a while back to practice from. I could send it to anyone that would like it. Quality is so-so but you'll get the idea.
TR, by the way, great work in the BowMania video. That is some hard work getting coyotes with a bow. I enjoyed it immensely, seeing as I am often in the mood for torture and bowhunt for coyote and fox.

The guys that got the horn calls from me,should be able to make the estrous chirps on those. The crit'r standard and the crit'r pee wee are both good calls to make the estrous chirps.I use the.010 reed on the standard for making a variety of sounds, including the estrous chirp.I get out close to the tip of the call and give little bursts of air from the mouth, not from the throat and lungs, flicking my toung against the tip of the call. It's something like a yip,but not as elongated and a little faster.Thats my version or way of doing it.

Melvin. You are right those three little calls you sent me do great estrus chirps. You are exactly right about the quick huffs.

When I started on the She- Howler I wonted it to do quick and easy chirps. I also used a .010" reed. I finally got it to so all you had to do was run it up to you're lips and huff. The results of the very first day out were unbelievable.

Smithers, I am very pleased you like the call. The neat little puppy wines and distress sounds just seemed to come along for the ride. Plus the super easy Ki-Ya.

Smithers,
I know about that She-Howler that Ronnie invented. When it first came out with Lohman, I demonstrated it at a few seminars. It sold like hotcakes! What I liked about it and showed the audiance about was it's ease of the call. The sounds that it produces are phenominal and accurate to a "T" IMHO!

Great tool to have this time of the year.

smithers, I read all the posts on here about the chirp sounds. I am interested in hearing a rendition of the sound.
In your post above you wrote that you would send the sound bite to anyone interested.

Quote: I recorded the chirps from the video TR is talking about a while back to practice from. I could send it to anyone that would like it.

I see you don't post your email address or accept PM's or I would have sent you a PM asking for the sound bite.

I'm not looking for sound quality, I just want to hear it and practice the sound with the calls that I have.
Thanx in Advance

varmit hunter,
You have came up with a very valuable tool for use on pressured coyotes. I ordered one of your She-Howlers today. Guys like me are always looking for new sounds for their bag of tricks. Thanks for sharing your idea with us. [Smile]

Well Ronnie I'm going to try to exploit this "new" sound of yours.....LOL Funny how we been using this sound or a rendition thereof for some time. It just takes a few hunters to use a good sound to make it worthy.. It still takes a thinker to understand what they hear and build a call that duplicates that sound.

I want to publicly thank you for your contributions to predator hunting over the years.
Thinkers like you help make my job easier.

Slydog,
I wasn't trying to spoil you fame sir. Sorry if it sounded like that. I actually do appreciate your sharing of the success you have enjoyed while testing this new sound. It isn't "new" to the coyotes sir, but it certainly is new to most human ears. I spoke to a man in AZ on the phone yesterday, who also helped test the sound and helped with making of instructional DVD. Everyone involved in the field testing of this sound are priceless individuals as far as I am concerned. [Smile]

Rich,
No offence taken, sir. I was just pokin fun at Ronnie...lol. The one person who through his hard work and that Of our friend in AZ have brought this sound to light. My hat is off to you guys.

My "FAME?" ????? LOL thats funny. To put my name and fame together is like putting a red dress on an outhouse.......LMAO.... My hide is thicker than that my friend and I know you don't work like that..

I just hope that others can maybe find some good out of my methouds. If my hunting expierance can help others learn how to or not to use this sound, Then I will feel that I have done some good. The real hero here is Ronnie, His contributions to coyote hunting have changed the way I hunt and many others also..
