There's a big patch of Sequoias a couple hours from home and I spent a couple of days calling around fresh bear sign. The only takers were a couple of Kamikaze coyotes that ran me over. Bear calling this trip was sort of a bust and when the rain turned to snow, I headed for home.
So I spent a few days cold-calling a bunch of new areas around the house, never getting more than about an hour from home.
I learned a valuable lesson from Steve Criner at the camp out, who must be part bird dog. When I wounded a coyote, Steve broke our stand and chased after that coyote. He didn't get it, but at the time I thought that was a good idea. Running up on a spinning dog and adding another round of buckshot has saved me from several run-offs in the last couple of weeks. Thanks, Steve.
Anyway, from the last couple of days, singles was all I got, but when you string them together, hunting near home was a good idea.
I heard some fine calling at the camp out, including Steve's. I realized then my own calling, while it's been productive, could be better. I'd like to get one of Brent's howlers and maybe a couple of other hand calls. I was wondering what some of you Pak's would say was a must-have? And maybe if I'm real lucky, I'll get one ofr two of you to take a few minutes and show me how to work the darned thing.

A Howler is a must and ive always thought that but now after huntin with Rich i think a guy should have enough around his neck to make enough difrent sounds to get em in. Im throwing several sounds out now.
I love hand calls since iv started using them again. But i still include my FP wich some dont have any confidence in electronics. I think though with your style Gary you will still use your elecs alot more unless you have a shooter. Wich i think i heard you say you were a loner. When me and Rich hunted we got in the thick also,and he offered several times for me to call and i declined because i told him i didnt think i could call and shoot beins we were standing up. (hard to shoot and call with just 2 hands, but we all know i cant shoot anyway,damn it) Oh and i thank you Gary for the compliment on my bird dog skills,im proud of em. Rich got to see me jump a cactus wich prolly is kinda stupid.

If you don't have one already, get yourself a BB mini-blaster. I doubt if you could find any enclosed reed calls that would outproduce a blaster on a day to day basis.

Hunting solo close to home again, right off the Freeway, this time for the club's monthly hunt. It was 5 times further to the check-in than it was to this hunting spot. A double, a triple, and a long string of singles, mostly daytime, mostly shotgun. mostly close range, 7-38 yards, and one with a .243 at 206 yards. I picked up eleven and couldn't find another 4 or 5 I'd swear I hit. I hit one hard at 310 yards, followed the blood trail in the dark for over an hour as it went from puddles to drops to smears to nothing.

Fourth double of the season (all shotgun).
First quad of the season. 18-38 yards. New hand calls and JS Squealing Bird on a Bandit. They just kept coming.
And a couple of singles makes 67 for the season.

Dang buddy, save some for the rest of us! I haven't even had time to break a dozen yet this season!
That quad is a hell of an accomplishment. I can normally get one triple a winter, but I've yet to take a quad!

We got a couple of cow elk Thursday. It was negative 17 degrees when we got out of the truck. I no sooner left the truck and all my mocos froze up. Once it hit 7 degrees , I was sweating!!!
Sorry for changing the topic. I haven't chased coyotes this year yet. I'm leaving tonight and I'll hunt all day tomorrow!

Tim, someone needs to hunt more. Danny, Brrrrrr. But it was 17 here a couple of nights ago and it broke a pipe on my irrigation and dumped 10,000 gallons of water down the hill. It was in the sixties today, and will be back in the seventies here next week. Coyotes were running at noon today and I was checking out a new spot even closer to home, about 20 minutes from the house, right next to the highway, amongst a few homes here and there.

Nahuatl: Considering the endless stack of critters you are posting on the forums, I doubt that you need much help in any phase of the game. But if you are serious about the howlers and calls, I can't recommend Jerry Hunsley's Wiley One Female Howler enough. That is the easiest howler to use I have ever seen, not just for howling, but for coyote distress, woodpecker distress, and rabbit and deer. It is unique in the way you don't use your teeth at all in the technique involved, like most of the open reed howlers. It will fit in the palm of your hand, but is about as loud as I have ever heard. You mentioned "Brent's howlers"; I assume you are referring to Brent Saxton. They are good for a fact, and he is one howling rascal. Somebody's coyote dog might tree him. (lol) His mouthpiece is the same as the E.L.K. Power Howler, but of course he puts them in a pretty cow horn and fancies them up. As for the open reed calls, Rich Cronk's Killer Call is aptly named and makes dandy pup howls too. As for closed reed calls, there are some good news ones out there, but I'll still stick with old Dan Thompson for extreme cold weather performance without locking up. Hell, you don't need all that stuff; you are going to kill every coyote in the west, pardner.

That sounds like a hell of an idea. Now if I could just get two 17 year old boys to cooperate.
Friday night one of them decided to park his truck full of high dollar stereo equipment under a tree in a secluded area of a parking lot to go to an over night wrestling tournament. Fortunately the Deputy pulled in just as the would be thief used the hammer in the back of his truck ( the same hammer that I've been looking for the two past weeks ) to smash open his window. I got done with the paper work and turned off the alarm clock when I crawled in bed a little after 1AM.
Then last night, Something with tits and a cute smile invited the other boy to hang around after work and listen to her sing karaoke. Must have been a hell of a song, as he was three and a half hours late getting home. When I got done reaming his butt for neglecting to call and let us know, it was once again after one AM before I could crawl in bed.
I want to get up and go hunting, I just can't seem to get to bed early enough!

They are having fun alright. Friday night at the Basketball game, Craig took the Microphone at half time and invited the crowd to wish his Mom a happy 60th Birthday. That was fun.
But for gift suggestions, she told them to buy her a couple of videos. I'm sure she meant movies.
They got her exercise DVD's
