I observed something this morning that I thought was unusual. Yesterday I was out scouting for deer when I came across a dead coyote carcass that was decomposing near a stock tank. It appeared the coyote laid down next to an old cement storage tank and died. This morning just south of this tank was a young healthy looking coyote with good teeth and no sign of mange next to a yucca bush dead. She died sometime between 10:00 yesterday morning and 8:00 this morning. These coyotes were no more than 50 yards apart. I found it very strange. Any ideas? My first thought was poison but don't know where they would have got into that. It was 98 degrees yesterday very hot for this time of the year. I know this would be a pure guess on your part but wanted to hear some ideas.

I was told, a long time ago, the poison used for rats works when they drink water? Other than that, no clue?

Anybody?

Good hunting. LB

I would ask the land owner if anyone is using cyanide guns in that area. They usually die within 50 yards after they pull one of those baby's.

They are supposed to post warning signs in areas where ADC hardware is being utilized.

Jeremy, do you remember any details about the freshly dead one? Some pathological evidence of cyanide poisoning are: Signs of violent convulsions. Opisthotonos (rigidity and severe arching of the back, with the head thrown backward). Bleeding from the nose, vomiting, and involuntary defecation. The eyeballs protrude. The mouth is covered with foam, which is sometimes bloodstained.

Any of these signs present?

Thats the first thing I suspected Rich, M44s. Ive seen 3 and 4 all with in 40 yards of the getter set/sets. Sometimes the warning tags are on an entry gate and thats it, Im not sure if they are mandated to post warnings within "X" number of feet or not?

all good info but I know this area, no ADC work going on here. The fresh one showed no sign of struggle, looked like she just died while laying on the shady side of a big yucca. She had no blood of vomit. Eyes looked normal also, just glazed over. I stepped on her and you could hear the air being pushed out of her. Another thought I had was she drank too much from the heat and then died??

Are you sure that there isn't anyone around there shooting a 17? I've killed a number of coyotes and had a hard time finding the wound, and I knew where I had shot it!

Jeremy, has Rich Cronk been calling that area? I hear that when Rich starts howling the coyotes die laughing. [Big Grin]
Wait, that's what Rich says about me. Never mind.

[Smile] I don`t know about Cronk blowing on a howler, I figured they were reading the "Where`s B.S." thread & died of old age before they reached the end of it.

Now that's some funny chit, right there! [Big Grin]

haha that’s funny...
Nobody should be in there shooting coyotes and I doubt they are, it’s on a private ranch.
This is one of those unsolved mysteries that will never be solved but I thought I would see if you guys had any ideas.

I have yet to stumble across a coyote, died of natural causes.

Jeremy, Were there any buildings or grain bins within a reasonable distance where they could have come in contact with rat poison? I`ve heard the same thing Leonard mentioned about that but who knows.

btw....I thought some of that footage on Cals video looked an awful lot like Kansas. [Big Grin]

I have seen something like that in the past while trapping. One year we had a few coons found dead around farm ponds. The trapping in that area wasn't very good that year either. It was like distemper or something like that.
They seem to want to get down to water for some reason. Then they end up dying next to the pond or water source.

In deer don't they call it blue tongue or something like that.

There are several diseases that can be fatal to coyotes. Some are viral such as rabies, bacterial such as tularemia, fungal such as histoplasmosis, rickettsial and transmitted by ticks such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever or worse Ehrlichiosis, and protozoan such as Coccidiosis. Most emaciate the coyote but some can work quickly and leave a dead animal with little physical sign of illness.
Canine hepatitus and parvo can quickly decimate a population.

Canine Hepatitus....

I think thats what I caught from that night I spent with Pam Anderson.

If Jeremy finds you lying under a yucca bush next to the hot tub the case is solved.
Jeremy, did the dead coyote have a silly-ass grin on it's face?

...in your dreams, Cal. That type of lightning strikes once, like Sandra Bullock and some bike jocky. But, we all have our dreams. LB

Sorry for the delay in the reply I was out guiding some antelope hunters...

Not sure where this one is going Rich but I do believe he did have a grin on his face [Wink]

Around here parvo has closed down (killed out) an animal shelter twice in the last 2 weeks. The lady on the news said parvo outbreaks kick off in spring and fall right after a rain if I heard right.
