Was thinking about going to South Dakota to do some coyote hunting some time in the future on a permanent basis. I understand they claim the coyote as their state animal and read somewhere that their coyote population numbers would average 1 coyote for every 1.2 miles is that a true acct? and is the hunting better on tribal land as compared to the rest of the state?
Rich,
Its ok I get that all the time, I figured you would que in on the story as BS and get a good laugh. Well it was a little graphic sorry to freak you out. [ March 27, 2006, 11:39 PM: Message edited by: RedRabbit ]

Better off going to Montana, they have higher numbers there. But if you think you need to go to S.D. then hunt the national grass lands.

RedRabbit, Sioux huh? Cool! I had wondered where your screen name came from. There is some great coyote country in some parts of south dakota.

TA17Rem, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, was too long, "shoots poorly" sounds embarassing. The rabbit, or what was left of him was red, so they just called him RedRabbit. Oh man, that ain't right. Lord, I apologize for that right there. Please be with the starving pygmy's down there in Africa---Amen. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

RedRabbit,
Ask your cousin if he remembers staying out too late a year ago on a Saturday night. Too tired at 10:00 Sunday, to get out of bed to tag a bobcat. LOL
Oops: Wrong ***********

If you been going to the Rez for 18 yrs now I wonder why you dont know him, people over there know when their neighbor farts and can tell you what they had for dinner in 18 yrs you should know him if huntings been your buisness there. They have six tribal wardens there and not one has ever mentioned that they have a cousin that lives in Idaho. Perhaps this cousin is a outcast, or retarded and thats why they never speak of such cousin. Or maybe such cousin dose'nt exist. Since you cannot devulge the names how about a different question then; what is the name of the YMCA camp they have there for the youths? and what is the name of the cematery on the East side of *** .?

What is that story supposed to convey? No doubt Custer was an idiot, but the documented mutilation by the savages resulted in much payback and hard feeling that have yet to be resolved. Ridicule doesn't seem appropriate, in my view. The Noble Red Man did a lot of stupid things, as well.
Good hunting. LB

Back to the original question.
South Dakota isn't like it used to be. The pockets of good hunting where a person can rack up numbers on a weekend hunt are getting real hard to find. Lots of pressure on the coyotes. Motels that I used to be the only coyote hunter staying at might now have 5 or 6 trucks of hunters staying there. That many hunters in one county will come in contact with quite a few coyote over a 2 or 3 day period. Multiple that by a few months of weekend and you might get what I mean.
IMHO: If you want to shoot lots of Coyote in South Dakota your' probably going to have to pound on the litters in August.

Well said greenside, i have noticed more and more hunters out that way in persuite of the coyote. The numbers are'nt what they use to be.

RedRabbit, I was teasing you just like I do everyone else that I happen to like. I have nothing against ******* at all. My favorite brother-in-law was 1/2 ****** , and he was very proud of it. There was a nice burial ceremony at his funeral that was done by ******* . Very impressive. General George Custer was an idiot for certain, but I don't believe for a split second that he died like a coward. Idiot or not, he was a brave man. Good luck in south dakota. There is a lot of good coyote country there. Finding landowners and gaining permission to hunt their land will be your biggest problem. If it was me, I would drive out to Winner and rent a motel for a week. While there, I would hang out at a local cafe and meet some ranchers.

I concocted that story, since I was being sterotyped in the first place and then whats this "mutilation by savages"? "Noble Red Man"?(sigh) Custer had an over inflated ego and as a result died, because of his arrogant attitude, hardly anyone to be proud of.
Look up 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty, or better yet http://www.sioux.org/more_history.html if you want to talk loss of great leaders. Very good read.
TA,
I don't want to put those youths in danger of a molestation from a sexual predator so I wont disclose the name of that YMCA and what do you want to know of a cemetery for. do you have a fetish for cadavers, or something? stay out of there it is very sacred!
Greenside,
Im not really looking to rack up numbers. Im more concerned with quality pelts form a few adult coyotes over the course of a few years if I could take 10 in 4 winter seasons each that would be enough for me. thanks [ March 28, 2006, 04:42 PM: Message edited by: RedRabbit ]

There's no intent on my part to try to influence your options on moving to SD. It's a great state and one hell of a Sportsman Paradise. I was born and raised on the Big Sioux river and over the years have spent considerable time east and west river.
If you move there you will shoot coyotes, just not the numbers that you would have ten or fifteen years ago.
East of Mission, to the river and north to 44, you'll probably have a hard time shooting any coyote with good fur. Real bad mange cycle going on there. North of Mission up to the White River and west to 83 had a parvo out break recently and I doubt the numbers are there.
The C-R *********** might be a good bet. Ask your cousin?

Greenside, Mission huh? I believe that is the Rosebud *** . ain't it? I went fishing up there once. Water was so clear that I could actually see the bass chasing my lure. I sort of borrowed a "dug out" that was sitting there on the bank. Those round bottom buggers ain't very stable. Dang thing tipped over and spilled me and my fishiing gear into the drink. Whoo Boy was that ever cold! ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

It sure is. I'm not sure that the mange cycle is as far west as mission, but it probably pretty close. I know there was pravo north and to the east all the way up to 90.
Fishing in SD? As teenagers, my brother,a friend and I snagged 3 paddlefish over 90 pounds below Big Bend Dam, Filled the back of my dads 1960 chevy station wagon

Redrabbit the name of the ymca camp and the cematery should be common knowledge to anyone who is a member of the Sioux tribe and anyone who has been there. I think you are just feeding us a line of B.S. again. I understand you been doing it for so long you can't tell the difference between truth and fiction. On another note, dugout cannoe, come on! They are no different than us, they have boats and jet skies, pick-up trucks and cars. They also live in houses just like you and i. There is one rancher i know that collects the old winchester rifles. Anyway lots of laughs

TA17Rem, Nope, it was a dugout alright. It was easy to tell that it was carved out of a tree, and bottom was round.

Greenside; As far as fur condition goes, they have mange as far north as N.D. border and as far west as Wyoming and Montana borders. Some areas worse than others. Red rabbit if you are looking for a few good coyote hides, I would suggest you look in the badd land area and in Montana. In Montana try to stay away from the mountains i here the mountain coyotes are pretty tough to call. Wyoming also has coyotes with the best fur, also the sandhills of Nebraska.
