Had some fresh snow this week so i headed out for some coyote hunting. Picked up a track crossing road, after 1 1/2 hours of tracking i was able to get 50 yds of bedded coyote. Never new what hit him. For you guys that like to see bloody yotes, sorry but my 17 would'nt have it any other way.

Cool Tach. I love hunting pheasants in fresh snow for the same reason. Tracking is really a lot of fun! You feel like quite the hunter/stalker when you find a critter at the end of the tracks. I've done it with elk herds too! But the elk always are on to me way before I spot them. I usually them crashing throught he timber. lol I would love to have it in me to follow fresh tracks to a predator.

Looking at the photo you posted, it looks like fairly open country. The wide open farm country in Iowa holds some of those call shy coyotes also. Calling at very first light in the morning when coyotes think it is still dark, and then again in late evening is about your only hope. Most of my calling is done back in the brush just like you said.

Couple comments. Not tying to sound like an idiot but I know that I will. (How in the hell do you put those smiles in?) What's that red stuff? I have seen a lot less out of a 22-250. It's really about shot selection and bullet construction isn’t it? (As compared to calibre or cartridge).
I’m not sure if I buy into the concept that “calling just won’t work here” philosophy. I will agree with “there has been lot’s of calling going on here and it is tough” idea though.
“You can’t call from here” has a lot of merit. Open country like in your picture is harder. From that picture and from hunting with Leonard I think that it would be a great place to do a little night hunting if legal.

Pretty much my thoughts, albert. I don't know that there's anywhere that the coyotes are "uncallable". Granted, some areas will be much tougher than others, depending upon pressures and influences, but if that happens, and you're able to really pin down what others are using and how they're offering it. a guy oughtta be able to come up with something outside that box to offer than can produce some results.

There's several websites that just do smilies, bestsmileys.com is my favorite (and on the help page it has the directions on how to use smilies too).

Where the hell is out west? Somehwere east of me I suspect.
I wouldn't take your challenge, any sooner than I'd take my own, and I doubt anyone else will.
You're more than welcome to come way way out west, if you can kill three coyotes (in my county) over three consecutive days (no nights) of calling... I'll EAT the third one.
My fork and knife have been waiting several years now.

P.S. Calling a coyote about 1:100 stands is about my average now, and I have NEVER seen a coyote in a place where it was legal to shoot it.
I don't know if I've ever seen a coyote track either (wouldn't recognise one).

It'd be fine with me if you go hunting in the Yakima Valley (hundreds of miles east of me)
But my challenge takes place in my county, a VERY different place than the scablands (I've traditionally offered the whole county north of me as well).
THAT'S what makes it a challenge (it's not your typical "out west" calling).
I doubt anyone will ever see me have to eat one.
I didn't want you to give up your spots, I ask where "out west" is, because it's a joke... "Somehwere east of me, I suspect. "
It takes two days+ of driving (east) to get out west, go figure?
I'm just an old virgin.
I dunno most of the names you list.
All I got is cyber-mentors (who are part time tor-mentors).

Good job! Other than some old timers, not many people know how to walk a fox or coyote down. At one time it was a very common tactic in the midwest. Fresh tracks in snow is like the old saying, Where there's smoke, there's fire.

Yeah, me too. If I have not said it before, I have no problem with hunting by whatever method works. In fact, I kinda/sorta do that in windy conditions, with a few innovations.

I never thought I'd see a guy dared to come WEST of the Mississippi River to call a coyote.
Make sure to put the brushgaurd on if you drive out there Tim... all them damn coyotes in the road are rough on your fenders. And take him some A1 sauce.

I agree. Hell, I live in a region literally smitten with neurotic coyotes and I can count on part of one hand the number of days I've called four coyotes, let alone killed four. If I made that offer, I'd have an impressive gun collection, wouldn't I? I fight the same plague as you guys (dog runners and newbie callers) and I will offer that my coyotes are tough, but far from uncallable. You remarked that your area sees a lot of hand calls being sold off the shelf every year and that they're overused to the point that the coyotes are educated. Happens here. But how many of those guys that buy their calls off the shelf know what a lot of us here know about the various types of sounds that bring them in? There's something there that will bring a coyote in. Something those other guys aren't using that will work for you or anyone else. No, you're not going to have them running you over, and you may have to make a long shot at one hanging up doing the recon from a distance, but that's the name of the game. You don't go hunting for the coyotes you want. You go hunting for the coyotes you get and make do. I just cannot believe that all your coyotes have completely given up on investigating the sound of a free meal in distress or an interloping coyote in their territory.
Having said that, I truly respect your ability to stalk and shoot a coyote. I don't think I have the attention span to pull it off.

I agree with that 100% Cdog, except the part about counting 4-dog-days on one hand. I called in four on one stand yesterday, the last day of our season. If I had the shooting ability TA does there would be some fur in the truck, but 350 yards is too much for me comfortably.
I know I've called in 4 on one stand three times this season... and 5 once. I'd say I've called in 4 or more in a days calling at least 10 times since October. The best run being 12 in 6 hours.
And yes, there are hunters at Hardees in town every morning crying the same sob stories about over pressured coyotes, rough terrain and low populations. I think they're right, I can't kill coyotes at Hardees either. ![[Confused]](confused.gif)
