Out trapping the other day and saw and shot a Swift Fox. First one ever for me. I'll post some pictures in a day or two. They aren't really common here, I've only seen a few, but they are legal to shoot or trap here and I know that they aren't in many places. Pretty little critter. I think I'll get it either tanned or mounted lifesize. I happened to have a 17HMR with me and so I did little damage.

My wife and I were just talking about those little fox again this morning. I caught a half a dozen of them this winter, right around my house. Hadn't seen or heard any for a while and thought I had them all.

Then at 3:40 this morning, I had one wake me up, by barking at the dogs. He sounded like he was less than 100 yards from the house.

Trapping season closes today. Just my luck.

Andy, I have always considered them the same animal, a regional name....but, I could be wrong?

Well, I've never considered a coyote a trophy Leonard, but this is sort of. I don't know the difference between a swift and a kit, but they do have two different scientific names, so there must be something. Maybe Higgins will look it up for us.

Same for trapping here Tim. I been pulling stuff the last couple days.

I see the little Bastards(Kits) all over in Nevada.They love to cross the roads at night.

Cal,

In the past(and on a lot of web pages that apparently haven't been updated to reflect current thought), the Swift fox (Vulpes velox) and the Kit fox (Vulpes macrotis) were taxonomically regarded as separate and distinct species. More recently, the (up to) six subspecies of V. macrotis have been regarded as subspecies of V. velox, thereofore, they are now considered subspecific variants of the same species.

As DNA technology is applied to taxonomy, you'll be seeing a lot of re-thinking of where different species fit relative to one another. A perfect example is the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). When I was in school, it was just another weasel and found under the Mustelidae family. You might recall a half-dozen years ago when there was a big stink ( [Smile] ) and further review found it was not, in fact, a true mustelid, but rather, a stand alone member of a new family, Mephitidae. That was an exciting time for all of us, wasn't it? [Wink]

I have seen what some people consider to be "Swift foxes" and they sure look like kit fox to me? Same as Chad, I am quite familiar with kit fox in CA, NV and AZ, but other places that I have been, I notice that the locals call them Swift Foxes. There may be a difference (slight) in size, but to me, they look identical? Of course, it could also be that some of the locals (not Cal, of course) but some of them could be mistaken? Calling a kit fox, a Swift fox sounds better.

I don't know about other places, but they are protected in California.

I'm with UTcaller, they all look like little bastards to me.

But then I raise chickens, I don't much like Hawks either.

They need to either give us night hunting in AZ or open the trapping season on the little bastards to year round.

I didn't used to think very highly of the "Red Mist" crowd. But that was before I met the little bastards. Now I understand.
