A friend of mine said he had been hearing coyotes behind his house for a week and asked if I could go hunt them Thursday. Well I told him I had work until 5. So there we were at 4 p.m. headed out to make a stand, you have to know your priorities. We parked the pickup and walked over two very steep hills. This is what I call suburb country and the coyotes see and hear vehicles, people, and pets all the time. My friend wanted me to bring Trapper (my cur) and since I was going for a relaxing afternoon I brought him, despite my belief he could scare coyotes away. I climbed over a third hill and sat under the skyline while Kyle stayed on the other side with his electric caller. Trapper ran around freely throughout the calling. Rabbit distress then a few minutes of silence. Rabbit distress again and then more silence. Third time around Trapper began howling to the rabbit sound. As I scan the area I see one coyote coming in from a few hundred yards away. Trapper saw him at about the same time and casually heads that way for a meet and greet. I ready my rifle and wait. The coyote continued to pick his way down from the hillside across the valley. He his perfectly upwind and has no idea I am there, also he is completely locked in on Trapper yet not aggressive so far. I look back at Trapper and then do a double take. A second coyote had snuck in and was within feet of Trapper, again not aggressive. Just kind of sniffing right by him. Being winter I didn't expect much dogging action. I had talked myself down from the initial adrenaline rush but when I saw the second coyote I couldn't resist. She was about 75 yards away and when she stepped clear of my dog I shot her. She goes into a tailspin. Trapper chases her into a washout. Meanwhile coyote number 1 tries to slip away without drawing attention. I take a shot at him but miss. Now he is running and I take another shot but with no better results. Coyote yips gave way to cur dog yelps down in the washout and I hurry down the hill to help my dog. The gut shot coyote is very much alive still and letting Trapper know that she is pissed. She sees me and makes a run for it, with Trapper by me I go ahead and take another shot. I broke both of her front legs with that shot and she couldn't get away. Trapper went and barked in her face a little before I finished her off. I have a some remorse for the sloppy kill but it happens now and then.
The first coyote came from the left of the picture down the edge of the first ravine. The second came from the right of the picture on the dirt road. That is where she met Trapper.
I sure am glad I skipped that last hour of work. [ January 20, 2006, 08:28 PM: Message edited by: Zach ]
