I'm sitting here waiting for a call from Kevin Lukens to let me know he made it to town alright. Been looking thru the windshield for 9 hours today getting out there and back and thought I'd take a few minutes to post a few pics for you to see.

Great hunt this weekend with a better end result than I think a lot of ppl expected, considering it was over 80-degrees yesterday across southern KS, Oklahoma, and winds near 35 mph today.

In short, well over 500 coyotes seen by the 115 Midwest teams and 40 Sportsman's class teams, with 257 (I think that's close) coyotes killed. That's compared to over 700 seen last year and about 275 killed last year. Overall, numbers seen and killed were both down, but their shooting was better. [Smile]

Here's a pic of the final body count down the parking lot...

 -

Got to meet a bunch of the local regulars, including this pic of (left to right) Cenny Burnell, Scott Huber, and Cal Taylor...

 -

Danny "Locohead" Gevara and three of his critters, left to right, Aubrey, Jacob, Danny and Joshua.

Finally, and what an honor it was for him, our own Kevin Lukens was named as Sportsman of the Year, shown here with Hunt Coordinator Brent Rueb...

 -

I've got a few more pics hidden on the memroy card but they haven't trasnsferred over yet and I'm tired enough to be seeing double. Hopefully, I can get them posted tomorrow along with a kill or two from Kevin hunting with Matt and I in the morning. Wish us luck.

Looks like a good turn out, how many did it take to win?

Congratulations Kevin! That is too cool, and well deserved.

229 killed, a couple of really ratty mangy ones, and 15 won the contest

Lance is an outdoor sports writer. He always rounds up, its his job! It was great to see you again Lance [Wink]

It was great to meet lots and re-meet lots of guys. Brent Reub is one of the neatest & kindest guys you might ever meet. Lots of Mongo-sized bucks on his walls. Scott Huber - quiet and confident (I stole that gem) 2Dog Taylor - much the same as Scott (quiet and confident - not to be confused with bashful, although it first seems that way for both of them)
Major Boddicker - big cheery, smiley, and super intelligent Mitch and Skyler Huggins - lots of fun, tons of great stories (some might even be true), generous & sincere

Kevin Lukens - Sportsman of the Year, a very well deserved award for a man extremely passionate about the outdoors - I wonder if the guy that nominated him knew that Kevin called a lion into the same tree where he had put his small wife If Kevin was just testing my gullibility, I failed. I swallowed and continue to swallow that tale hook line and sinker! LOL [Smile]

Well spit it out for God sakes!! WHO won, who got second third and fourth. What did it take to place in the top five? How many coyotes did Cal and his partner get? How many coyotes did Scott and his pard get? Did they place or did they pay good money to get wooped? LOL Enquiring minds want to know!!

Good hunting.

So I was a little off. Mia Culpa.

And yeah, it was great to see some old friends, and meet a few new ones. I think Matt had a good time and the Event didn't let me down when I told him he'd probably never see this many dead coyotes in one spot.

A few more pictures...

 -

(L to R) Aubrey Gevara (Loco's little girl), Tyler Higgins, Kevin Lukens, Rich Higgins and Matt Kohman

 -

Aubrey, Jacob, Danny, and Joshua Gevara (great kids, Danny)

And finally,

 -

Tyler, me, and Danny (Locohead) Gevara.

I just got the green light from Paul to do a write up on the event for T&PC. I'll save all the details and encourage you to subscribe if you wanna read all about it. [Big Grin]

Not fair, Lance!

Sudden thought. Why are you wearing camo in the above pic? Trying to blend in with the hunters?

It's expected. [Smile] Actually, I told Cal he'd know me because I would be wearing cammies. Can't be lyin'. And the fact that at this time of the year, I'm either in my camos or my postal uniform, and I'd have looked stupid in my work clothes. [Roll Eyes]

We didn't have much to brag on today. Temps were better but the wind stayed with us all day gusting well over 20-25 throughout the day.

Kevin called in a definite "maybe" but all we saw going on were sparrows dive bombing something in the thick grass and sunflowers. A while later, Kevin and I watched and listened to a pair of blue jays raising all manner of hell as they moved west down a fencerow toward where I was calling from. We worked that set up for a while but the jays gave up and left, and so did we. When Matt caught up with us on the way out, he asked us why we didn't shoot "that bobcat". He had a medium sized 'cat quarter across in front of him at 120 headed toward me and when I asked if he saw those bluejays, he said he had and that they were in the general vicinity of the bobcat. I'd told him earlier in the day that I wanted Kevin to get a shot at any coyotes we had come in, if we could work them in front of him, and he assumed that I meant 'cats, too. Oh well.

We had fun and called some great KS setups. Here's Kevin and Matt looking out across a big lot of Kansas rangeland.

 -

And the three of us before calling it a day.

 -

Made seven stands. Saw one bobcat. Didn't kill a thing (except for some mud clods along the edge of a pond from that last stand). Still enjoyed great company. That's the important part.

Tyler and I didn't get to hunt because all 115 teams filled up before we registered. We are next years' champions by the way!

Q, not sure of the winners names. Apparentley they won 3rd last year with nine coyotes. I think they told me that the St. Francis is the only tourney they've ever competed in. A couple of young, really down to earth guys. Here's their picture to the left of Rich, Kevin, Cal, and Brent.

Did Higgins win the calling contest? I know, stupid question!

Q,

That's Jeremy Gugelmeyer, Lincoln, Kansas, on the left, and next to him is his partner, Nick Peterson, Lamar, Colorado. They had 15 coyotes total. As far as the answers to the rest of your questions, you'll have to read it in T&PC. [Big Grin]

I'll let Cal and Wiley share the details of their respective hunts if they so desire.

Hey Rich... why you wearing that camo jacket?!?

He should have and would have but he too was busy buying my family some Kansas cooking. He saw the contest but wasn't able to enter. Callers were limited to 4 contestants I think, maybe 5.

If it is the same Jeremy that I think it is he is a nice guy. I talked to him on the phone a few days before the hunt. You are right he is a very nice down to earth guy. We talked about my sneak, peek and squeak technique. I am curious to know if he had a chance to use it during the hunt. Regardless he and his partner did a damn fine job. Fifteen coyotes in a day and a half is outstanding!!

Good hunting.

Thanks

Hey Jeremy,

A little belated, Nice to meet you. If I had known who you were on the boards I would've recognized your name and introduced myself as Locohead. I was the guy with only 3 critters, Aubree, Jacob and Joshua. Aubree took that picture!

[Smile] CONGRADULATIONS!!!!! Great Hunting!

Locohead: "I was the guy with only 3 critters, Aubree, Jacob and Joshua."

What fine kids they are. The above picture is priceless. What a neat family you have. I enjoyed our visit.

My partner and I ended up in 7th place with 6 coyotes out of the 9 we saw. We fired 8 rounds. We called up 4 and shot 4 (1 triple and 1 single). We jumped 2 on the way into a stand and shot both. Jumped another and missed a running shot and an off balance standing shot. Had 2 other coyotes answer us but they wouldn't come in. We found out later that they had just been called in and missed by a local resident. Would have used a different sound had I known. Tried to ambush them but they gave us the slip.

We were satisfied with our take considering the number of coyotes we had to work with.

The only way to win most of these larger coyote calling contests is to have a large supply of virgin eared coyotes to hunt.

Congratulations Jeremy! 15 is an admirable take within any population of coyotes.

~SH~

St Francis is a great hunt and we had a great time too! We only ended up with 4 and it took 5 to place. I believe 5 tied for 12th thru 9th, and it's too bad because I screwed one up in some CRP. Had a coyote blast in to 100 yds and I thought I had a clean shot, but I shot a weed about a foot in front of my barrel. Next year I'm bringing a 416 or 500 nitro for the CRP. Actually I'm going somewhere without CRP, I hated that stuff! We probably would have done well in the tie, because we had some big coyotes. 3 out of 4 were males and all our males weighed over 30 pounds. We did place in the Big Dog side contest, and won a little. Met the winners also, and what a couple great young guys! It is a great hunt and I would reccomend it to anyone.

I've got Kevin on the phone as I type this and he asks me to ask Locohead to call his wife at home (after dinner) at 520.456.9879 and ask her the story about the lion. He says he'll give a full report about the hunt when he gets home and thanks everyone for their congratulations and support.

Couple questions for anyone who was @ this hunt.

1. What did the largest coyote weigh?
2. Did anyone see any feral dogs running with a coyote[s]?

Thanks, just curious.

BTW, enjoyed the pics...Thanks

It was great to meet everybody. It is just finally sinking in how well we did on Saturday's hunt. We were not able to connect with our first coyote till a little after 11:00 on Saturday morning and ended up killing our last coyote a few minutes past 5:00 Saturday evening for a total of 13 coyotes. On Sunday morning we got 2 more for our total of 15 coyotes. Here is a pic Lance took for us.

2dogs,

We didn't hunt in the event, but five hours east of there, my gunner ran up on two dogs running with a coyopte that flushed from a gut pile we've been building. I asked him iof they were still running together. After he checked with everybody in the 'hood, and no one knew anything about them, the answer became a resounding "No".

Interesting, Lance

This brotherhood of domestic canines & coyotes. Playing, mating & killin each other. Facinates the tar out of me.

Wished I knew more about the "infamous" coydog.
------------------

Read, some time back. This one "expert" stated, "A "true" coyote. Will not weigh more than 35lbs"

I'm thinking, he meant on the isle of "lillie pe-ution"...perhaps, LOL!
-------------------

BTW, I lost that rabbit squaller, I bought from ya... [Mad] [I laid it on the ground] [Roll Eyes] . I loved that call. I don't like wearing calls, around my neck [Roll Eyes] . What type of reed was in it?

I believe it would have been the JC PRoducts LV-002. Sorry to hear you lost it. Gonna be a great find for someone some day. Be careful if you hear something dying and you go to check it out. It might well be that the coyotes found it and might try to use it against you. [Smile]

Holy Cow Jeremy, 13 coyotes in 6 hours, that's putting some fur on the ground in a hurry! How many coyotes did you guys see and how many others did ya call in?

We saw a total of 25 coyotes for both days...We wounded 3 that we never found and missed 2 that were less than 150 yds haha.

Scott did that to himself Nasa! Or maybe he always looks like that? I'm not sure, but we sure had a good time visiting about coyotes, and we talked alot about Higgins too, when he wasn't close. (kidding)

I'll tell you one thing, Cal . I have never seen anyone work a room like Higgins. He ought to run for office?

Good hunting. LB

PS Nancy thinks you are a hunk. Don't ask me? But, I can tell you one thing, you bear a resemblance to a well known California coyote hunter, just younger. No kidding, you remind me of a young Rick Oreilli, and that ain't too bad. He's probably won the CA State championship ten times?

Coincidentally, the guy I was thinking he reminded me of is also named Cal.

Ripkin that is! Wow, what a hunk'! [Big Grin]

I take it as a complete compliment that Nancy thinks I'm a hunk, Leonard, but Loco thinking so just makes me nervous. He seemed perfectly normal when I met him. LOL!

Brent has presented this contest for 9 years and over that course has refined the management, with a very competent crew, to a really impressive state of effeciency. He is a great MC and appears to be in total control of every aspect involved in presenting and promoting a three day social event/contest that involves more than 200 juveniles of all ages (typical coyote callers). He had no problem sticking his finger in the dike whenever a crack appeared (behave yourself Cal) [Smile]
Tyler and I videoed Brent for an episode of "Masters of the Call" this year and he is just as efficient in the field. He knows and understands his coyotes in his area. His technique and discipline are excellent. And can that boy shoot off of those sticks that he makes. WOWIE! Good man and great company. Tyler and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Congradulations to all the contestants and winners! It was a plesure to meet you all.

Thanks Kevin

Thanks Brent!

Having competed in coyote calling contests in 4 states, there is no better contest out there. It's nice to know that we are competing on a level playing field. We may not have a coyote refuge sewed up but there is enough coyotes in the non refuges in that country to allow anyone to compete if they work hard enough and have a good game plan. We'll be back next year.

Yes, Thanks Brent. This guy was extremely generous to my family and I even though we weren't able to hunt. He bought Pizza Hut and diet Budweiser (of which I still owe Rich 1/2 the tip) and he even let my family eat all the coyote chile we could handle Sunday afternoon! Thanks again Brent! Everytime we turned around he was trying to give me another free caller. Generous and kind he is. (Yoda speak) [Smile]
