Took young Matt back out this morning to see if we could get him another coyote. Or, two. The first stand offered nothing and I headed us toward another spot where I thought we might get lucky. Decided to drive around the entire section to check for the best possible approach and, along the south side, I'll be danged if we didn't top a hill to find two coyotes standing along the road about a hundred yards out. Matt suggested that we drive on down the hill to some cover and call them. I suggested that I just get out and kill them now. So I did. At least, one of them. Rookies! Both yearlings and dumber than rocks, they just stood there while I glassed them thru the scope, picked out the one with the best fur and shot. Bang. Flop.

Number two got real smart, real quick and busted out for cover to the NE. I told Matt we'd come back and collect her in a little bit.

"Can you do that?"

Guess we'll find out.

As we walked out from another blank stand a couple miles over, I told Matt how last year I had scored a poor man's double by killing one, then coming back an hour later to call and kill another from the same pack last November... I'll be damned! November 11! I told him I was going to try for a repeat performance.

We went around to the east side of the section and made the long hike in to overlooking a series of cover pockets where I guessed number two had taken refuge. With Matt looking north, I went out in the pasture and set up looking west/ southwest. Started out with lone howls on the Power Howler to simulate number two's long lost little sister. Then went at it with a double-reed antler call I made some time back. About fifteen minutes into things, I was bored, ready to get out of there and was occupying myself enjoying the chance to rest my legs by trying to wipe away some smudges of guts or something on my pretty rifle stock when I look up and here goes a coyote cruising across in front of me, only its head visible above the grass. I swung the rifle up, found her in the scope and "Woof" - Bang - Flop. 41 yards. Entrance beneath the chin, exit out the back of the neck with a lot of coyote going with it. Messy. Mangy, so it didn't matter. Did her a favor. Looked her over and the pattern of hairloss was identical to the one I'd passed on an hour earlier. Two November 11's, two doubles, both with an hour of time between them.

Here's me with the pair, and I'm even smiling a little bit [Smile]

And since few of you guys get to see some of the country we call in here, this is a pic of a big four square mile pasture we called today but didn't see anything. Plan to hit it again soon and make a wide circle like Q does with the sneak, peek and squeak to see how we can do. This is about as good of visibility as we'll ever get here.

That's Matt under one of the few trees out on the grass that could be found. Looks wide open, but the grass is still about 18-inches tall and keeps you from calling from a prone position like you can in the sandhills.

Awesome results. I was born at 11:11pm, so I've always thought 11 11 was a good pair of numbers. [Wink]

I was born at night, but not last night, LOL. TGIF...

Anyway, nice pair of coyotes and Matt's lucky to have someone to teach him the art of coyote hunting. Maybe next time you'll have to race Matt out of the truck for the shot!

And that's really pretty country! Looks perfect!!!

later,
scruffy
