startin the season off with a bang! 2 new calls came today and i just had to go out and give em a try. I have been dyin to call a new spot behind a friends house, so i called him and he was able to go, picked him up 10 minutes later. This was his first time ever goin coyote callin so he did not take a gun, he just sat behind me and watched. started with the tweety and within 3 minutes a coyote is standing in the open field in front of us, he was out about 250 yards, so i start lip squeakin and he started trottin in, then another coyote appears behind him, then another, until 8 coyotes were in the field, i'm in aww, my friend is tryin to count em all, i'm focusing on the closest one, it finally gets to about 30 yards while 2 more are within 100 and the rest were hangin back at the 200 yard mark or so. i decided to take the middle coyote of the 3 closest, figured if i could get 2 then that would be great, pull the trigger and POP down he goes, coyotes are scattering every which way then, grab the a-p6 start with pup distress and the one that was closest to me turns and comes back to the one layin there flaggin it's tail, then another comes back my way. i'm thinkin let it get as close as it will then pop #2 so i shoot again and down goes #2 this one starts yippin and spinning and #3 turns around and came back to #2 circling it, i barked to stop it and shoot again and down went #3. by this time i lost track of the rest of them but my friend said they headed out after shootin #2 and that he counted 8 coyotes total. my friend was exstatic, never seen anythin like it, course i haven't seen that many at once either,i thought i was in texas or arizona..lol.. anyhow i'll post pics tomorrow.
good hunting JD

Good job!! Triples are had to come by. I hear that eastern coyotes are hard to call into the open. How about a description of the terrain and the setup? Edit: Any age estimate on the ones you shot? Adults, yearlings?

it happened in central ohio, farm country. 2 were pups, 1 looks to be a yearling female. setup: i setup about 100 yards from a gravel pit that the farmer throws all his dead livestock into, was plannin on havin to use coyote vocalizations to call anything, goin for a territorial response, but i just got a new tweety and wanted to try it out first and thats what got em. the area they came from was a 100 acre thick woods which sits right between 2 farms that the farmers throw out there dead. coyotes are in there all the time, i called 6 out of there last february just using coyote vocals. it's my honey hole!

Wow, that must have been fun!
I have to wonder why 8 coyotes were that close together? Perhaps it leads into the old debate that the Eastern Coyote has more wolf genes in it than people think? It sounds almost like a pack.
I have seen coyotes in New Hampshire in packs of 5 and 6 all the way into late winter. Had one come in on me when I was shooting crows on March 1st one year. There were at least 6 in that pack.
Still, you must have been in coyote heaven when they all came in like that. Cool.

Nice job Canine!!Triples don't come around that often. I've srewed up a few chances for a triple one way or another, but on the 21st of this month,I did a solo stand with a mouth call and called in four, killing all of them with a three shot bolt gun, having to pull the 4th round out of my ammo pouch to down the 4th one. I've been using a muzzle brake on my rifle lately, seems when the lead flys, multiple coyotes have been confused determining which way the muzzle blast is coming from and which direction to haul ass. Their hesitation was their mistake.Got a couple buddies that swear by 'em for the same reason. Not to mention ,you can watch the bullet strike from lack of recoil, which is great. I'll bet you had a smile on the whole day,I sure did!!Again, nice work!
