Mike tells me that Berkley just finished a study of dispersal patterns. Genetic tests were conducted on a large number of trapped and shot coyotes throughout the state. He said the number provided a significant sampling. Results determined that coyotes dispersed as much as eighty miles but only within the elevation that the coyotes were born and reared in. That is... the coastal coyotes remained on the coast, valley coyotes remained within the valleys, and mountain coyotes remained in the mountains.

Higgy,
That study reminds me of your uncle Jay. No matter how far he may travel it does not improve his facial appearance.

In all seriousness, that data is easy to believe. LB

That begs for the question"Would any of these 3 pair mate or would they not because of there genetics"?..Then another Question"if they did pair or breed, how would they determin there territory"?

Leonard,
I agree with you. It makes perfect sense that the coyotes would search out new territory that was similar to their old home.

Well, those findings seem to blend with my casual observations. In other words, It seems to me that mountain coyotes remain mountain coyotes, and valley coyotes stay put, as well. I don't see it much different than city and country folks.

Good hunting. LB

That makes sense..Lets say you were a mountain boy and you married a city girl, where would you live?..Would she get her way and you had to move to the city(if you wanted to keep her)or would you try to coax her into the mountains to live?..I wonder how this would work out with two coyotes with different back grounds?..or wouldn't any of these 3 groups of coyotes associate with each other?

They associate and mate with what is available. That is the cause of intergradation of subspecies and hybridization between species.
