Cal you're DVD was in the mail today. Locked the door, and shut off the phones.
As a Dog lover and Coyote hunter that was a double treat. I would drive past a free Elk, and Mule Deer hunt to hunt with you and those Dogs. I can't begin to understand how they are trained that well. Not to mention how this flat Lander fell in love with that country.
Don't won't to give anything away to the guys that haven't seen it, but that Hawk, and Coyote seen is worth the price of the DVD. That Coyote deserved a stiff drink after the day he had.
Thanks a million. Headed back to watch it again.

Cal, I finished watching you video 1:30AM this morning.
I really liked what I saw (and heard). I would really like to know what type of parabolic microphone you are using. The coyote vocalizations were tremendous.
One thing that is very apparent is that coyotes are very aware of their surrounding and seemingly have eyes in the back of their heads.
Another thing that struck me was that no matter how hard your dogs were running and chasing after the coyotes, the coyotes just seemed to bounce along with no great effort.
The hawk footage was very good. I suppose the coyote would listen for it getting close before it would leap up.

All right! DVD arrived today, with notes all over it from the USPS. It was "damaged", it was "lost", it arrived "unsealed", and it was "found on the floor". Whatever, it's finally here. Now if I can just finish up here at work, I can go watch it.

Cal, I got your video in today's mail. Thanks for getting it to me so soon. Great dogs. I love watching them work those coyotes. I have some other video's showing coyotes dogs and it still amazes me how focused the coyotes are on the dogs. I will watch it again with my son when he gets home.
Thanks again for another great addition to my video library.

Thanks All, And I missed Jay's question about the mic's. They are just the standard external mic that comes on the Canon XL1 and XL1 S . The only major changes that we will make now is the instalation of some fuzzy wind socks to cut some wind noise. We lost alot of footage becasue you couldn't hear anything but the wind. After quite a bit of research we found one wind sock that will work, and they are about 180 a pop. They are called a Rycote softie.
NASA, Was yours in good enough condition, or do I need to get another one out? We can straighten it out with the postal service if there was too much damage. [ September 30, 2005, 04:00 PM: Message edited by: Cal Taylor ]

Cal, I just finished the video about 15 minutes ago. I've had to watch it in "installments" as I get home so late. I was planning on watching it all the way thru tomorrow, but I just got a call from work. They want me in at 7 tomorrow AM. So it looks like tomorrow nite and all day Sunday will be my "free time". I hope. There is some really great footage. I would love to spend some time watching those dogs work in real time. After I watch it again I may have some questions, but I'm not sure yet. Casper sure loves his job!

I just finished watching “Going to the dogs” for the 3rd time. Talk about the gentrification of coyote hunting! This is the life. Settle in, get comfortable, and let the dogs do all the work. If you can call it “work”. To a casual observer, it may look like the dogs and coyotes are just playing and chasing each other around. But the “games” the dogs are playing are part of a very premeditated scenario. The dogs are well versed in their roles and really enjoy what they are doing. It’s obvious that Cal has invested many, many hours in the training of his dogs, because it certainly shows. Definitely a “must have” video.

Yes indeed those dogs are well trained.....
And make no mistake, they have very devious, evil intent when "playing" with coyotes.
Gotta love it.

Evil is correct Andy, The dogs that I have had and hunted a few years get to where they know almost exactly when you are going to shoot and which coyote. When they get the coyotes in to that 100 yd range they start checking and waiting and as soon as they hear the crack of the rifle they are headed for "revenge." I had a black mouth cur female that would have a coyote by the throat before it could hit the ground. And I swear to God Casper smiles, when a coyote stops in range, because he know whats next. The other thing that they occasionally do, and you see Casper do it in the video in the segment where Cenny Burnell is working the mangy coyote with my dogs, and I'm filming, is that if the dogs are fresh and really wanting to prolong the "game" they will keep a coyote working just at the edge of where they know you'll shoot them, and they will play until they decide that the game is over and it's time for you to get to shoot. I hate it when they do that, but it is obvious when they do. And it does kind of crack me up that they don't want it to be over too fast.

That is funny. I can appreciate that. Though I havent had a tolling dog and only very, very limited experience with summer coyotes, I love to watch a dog work. And, yeah, they do have a mind of their own and do smile.
You got some gem dandys there Cal. Lets see some more....

Did you notice the dogs seem to have a little ESP working for them, too. Without looking back, they seem to sense how close the coyote is when it's chasing them. They accelerate or slow down just enough to keep the coyote in the game. The one time Casper took a nip on the butt I can almost believe he did that on purpose. Just to keep that big ole boy in close.

How would you go about training a dog to do that? How would you correct it when it was wrong?
