That's a pretty broad statement offering the same level of smarts to all coyotes, when in fact, I believe that all coyotes are not created equal. I believe that some are better equipped to learn life's lessons after the first near miss and correlate the next occurrence of those or similar circumstances with danger the next time they are encountered. Along that line, though, I wouldn't go so far as to assign them the ability to think to themselves, "Holy crap, I've been here before. It's quiet. Toooooo quiet." Then run like hell.
I've known some coyotes to be lucky, and my shooting ability had more to do with that then their luck.
A perfect example is the one and only calling contest I've ever entered. It was a local affair and I managed to call a single in on one stand. I promptly missed my shot, the coyote ran over a distant hill and was gone. My partner came to where I was and in a normal tone of voice asked me what happened. We visited for most of a minute in normal speaking tones until deciding to sit down and see if anything else was around. First series of calls, here comes the same coyote back over the same hill on the same trail. I shot at him with the same rifle and killed him. Go figger.

I have to agree with,Cdog...I have called the same coyotes many times and have had better success the second and even the third time around...Most generally i would let things settle down for a few days before returning to call, and many times it was the older male that i would call in,and kill...there might be a responsible, protecting thing, programmed in there brain for responding and coming to the call the second and even, the third time around...Now my success is more with coyote sounds, more so,than other critter distress sounds to accomplish this.

"A coyote is only dumb once".
I like it. It doesn't explain the old coyotes I've killed with teeth worn down almost to the gum line in areas that I (and others) have been calling for years or the ones I've found with shot under the skin that wasn't mine though. It seems to me that if a coyote was only dumb once, we would only kill yearling pups.
However......if we prepare our rifles, traps, calling stands, ect. with the thought, 'a coyote is only dumb once' we should have a better chance of doing it right the first time.
I was going to pull some weeds in the yard this afternoon, but since a coyote is only dumb once, and fur will be prime before we know it, I better go burn some powder at the range. Is this a great place, or what?!?!

I agree with cdog.
I believe "a coyote is only dumb every so often."
I'm no master coyote hunter, but I'm no slouch either -- my experience has shown me a coyote remembers for a period of time and then can then be fooled again. I've called coyotes in, missed, and then had luck on the same fellow with the same technique 4-5 weeks later, assuming I'd left that area cool down.
Drought changes all these things. About 7 or 8 years back we had no significant rain for about 18 mos. No cottontails, no mice, scarce vegetation.
The coyotes lost all common sense due to hunger. Would respond to almost anything quickly in desperate pursuit of a meal. Easy pickins.

So, there need be only one tool in the shed, eh?
Cottontail 101C will get you another shot at him, five weeks from now?
I think my friend had something else on his mind. A coyote is smart and can learn from his mistakes. You call him and miss him, and he might respond again, but he will be a lot more cautious, and he might not offer much of a shot.
Trip, are you 100% sure you were dealing with the same coyote, five weeks later?
I mean, I subscribe to the kill 'em right, the first time. He was dumb, and he paid the price. You get a lot of lead in the air chasing him back over the hill, and most of us would assume that that coyote isn't going to be nearly as dumb, next time.
I don't know, myself. I just wondered what others were thinking.

Yes, 100% sure. His Eric Clapton t-shirt was the give-away.

I think a coyote is only as smart as his stomach. That's why I see so many road killed coyotes. They smell food on the pavement and then wait until somebody turns the light on for them before they run out for take out. Whacko! I'm back. We thought we really messed up the computer. It kept saying that we need to reconfigure. Didn't know what that really meant, but I did a lot of configuring. Had to call my cousin and he showed us some restore point. It was easy, but I sure can't remember how he got there. Lucky for me he has a phone. I've done pretty good lately. Seem to be getting older coyotes instead of this year models. Seems weird to me but I'm not complaining. Anyway I am out of the boiling pot for awhile.

Take two old coyotes, the same age. Whether they both be males or females, & have had similiar life experiences. One will experience death before the other, IMO.
