I've often heard it said, and may have repeated it myself, that 'a coyote will eat anything that doesn't eat him first'.
Now I'm wondering.....will a coyote eat those big slugs you guys raise as pets up in the North-Wet??

In my area, the only thing. I've seen they don't eat are racoon. I've caught a couple of skunks in some coyote trap-sets. They'd kill'em & eat only their soft belly's.

The last time we had the 17 year cicada i got the idea i would make bait from them.I filled up jars of them and put up till trapping season,"Coyotes wouldn't touch it".(they won't even go near the hole.)I think i found one thing they won't eat...I diluted it with salmon oil and"coyotes love salmon oil", they still wouldn't touch it.

I fed a few coons to my coyotes. It wasn't their favorite food, but they'd eat them. Groundhogs seemed to be their favorite. Two coyotes could have a groundhog completely gone, bones, fur and all, in less than 20 minutes.

I dropped a possum into a pen one day. Turned out the possum was only playing possum. The next day he'd moved into the den box with the two coyotes and lived with them for two weeks before I pulled him out of the pen.

I don't recall ever trying to feed them carp, but possums are the only thing I ever tried feeding them that they refused to eat.

It's been pointed out to me, that I let a direct question go unanswered.

For that I apologize, but I don't have an answer.

I don't know what coyotes around here eat.
"only the yippers know, and they ain't sayin'"...

I have never seen, and do not know of any "animal" (other than a slug) that would eat a slug, not even a bird (though I knew a kid who ate em right off the ground when I was growing up).

Slugs are very very abundant here, coyotes are not, if coyotes ate slugs I'd bet we'd have a lot more HUGE coyotes and a lot less huge slugs.

Kokopelli,

You don't have slugs in Winnamucca? [Wink]

I see that Geocaching is really popular in your neck of the "no woods"... do you ever play?

Krusty, Not a problem. I shoot the Capitol City Bowman's range and we were having one of those "Nothing in nature goes to waste...Everything is prey to something" discussions when I had to ask "What about the slugs?". Nobody knew but the thought of something eating one was enough to put us off of our feed for a while.

To anyone not familliar with these slugs... picture a mottled, slimey, magnum sized, living coyote turd with antenna, crawling in damp rotting places. And no, they do not live under the clean dessert sun.

I never got 'into' geocaching, but have a freind who does quite a bit of it in the local parks. I suggested he wear a full haz-mat suit sometime just to see people's reactions.

I'm finding it interesting that there are things that coyotes don't seem to eat.....'possum, cicada, & possibly slugs. That's a pretty short list.

Kokopelli,

Now I understand, see I wasn't sure it was a serious question at first. [Wink]

Yeah the thought of anything eating one (having stepped on them) turns my stomache.

This is the only thing in nature that I know eats other slugs...

 -

It's a predatory spotted green leopard slug, about 4-6" long extended, and it can move about twice as fast as other slugs.

It mostly hunts these... european red slugs.

 -

Note the slime trail in the background, if it's not exposed to the sun it can last a few days or more.

We do have the world's second largest species of slug, the spotted banana slug. The average adult is about 6-8" but they can get up to nearly a foot long.

Here's a "pet" one. [Wink]

Disgusting lil buggers eh?

P.S. Geocaching is very popular here (where it started), we often add a cache or two into a day of stands, it's amazing how many caches and benchmarks we are going by anyway.

For the rest of you with GPS, you can find out about geocaching here .

P.P.S. I did find this, I guess maybe you guys were right...

"Predators include snakes, foxes, porcupines, crows, ducks, shrews, moles, salamanders and even humans."

Gotta love the Bannana slugs!

Krusty - I am interested in Geocaching and have a couple questions for you.
Where do you leave your caches? What do you leave in them? Do you take anything? How can I find one of your caches? Sounds like fun.

Call them and they will come!
