I know most of us has howled and deer or antelope has come to the howling..I know i'm not to smart but this makes no sense to me.I've had deer run in as close as only a few yards,That close to me would seem to be an easy kill for a coyote. What explanation would some of you have for this? They do this anytime of the year ,so i know it has nothing to do with a fawn nearby.Makes one wonder, do coyotes howl them in?

So far as I know, I have never done it? Distress sounds, yeah. Can't remeber an occasion when either a deer or pronghorn responded to howling.....other than occasionally getting out of bed and runnng away?
Good hunting. LB

I've holwed in muledeer does many times but it's only been in the spring when the fawns are new. They come stormin right in to a howl. Human scent doesn't seem to phase deer in a situation where they think there's a coyote threat.
After a few seconds of standing there snorting and not seeing a coyote the doe turns and leaves. A quick bark on the howler spins the deer around in mid flight and brings it right back looking for a coyote.
That was an interesting first time observation. It's happened a few times since but I consider it a blown stand, when I stand, the deer runs off. The thought of getting stomped or hooved has very little appeal to me.

Yes Leonard,..Howled them in!.."Domain howls"..This comes as a surprise that none has come in for you when howling.Yes i had them come in using distress calls but had a few come to howling.Surely someone had deer come in to howling out that way..I know some who has had the same experience here..Thought it was a natural occurance elsewhere.

Normally, I do not just howl, on a stand. If I were to start any howl at the beginning of a stand, and within a couple minutes, revert to a distress, and add a howl five or six minutes into a stand, I couldn't say, with certainty, that I attracted a deer with a howl.
By the way, are you talking about whitetail deer?

I don't know how many of you have watched the video we did with BassPro, but I called in a couple deer in that one, and theres one segment where a doe chases a coyote that was coming in. And not just a little ways, she ran him out of the country. Right on his butt for as far as the camera could follow.

They were white tail deer...One night my wifes brother and i walked out an old logging road, through some thick mountain laurel that was on both sides of the road..we stopped in a clearing and i gave 3 howls, wasn't but seconds that we heard crashing in the laurel and comming our way..Talk about getting shook up!we thought we were gone to get run over!..The deer stopped mere feet from us and stood looking us over..After a minuite or so they left..Pitch dark, thick laurel and charging deer don't make one feel to well at the time.

I wished i had my twice barrel shootgun

If we promote howling enough, this coming deer season; nimrods in their tree stands will all be howling at each other.
(mental image)
I can just see those deer, bouncing from tree to tree, like hitting the bumpers in some giant pinball machine....and knocking dozing hunters out of their stand.
Hey Trip, sounds like the germ of an idea for an article?
Good hunting. LB

I have deer stop by to take a look at us fairly often. 3 or 4 years ago I got about twenty minutes of video of a four point desert mulie that popped up out of a wash 80 yards out to take a look at the howler. I coaxed him in within 10 feet of me over that twenty minutes with puppy howls mixed with puppy distress.
Brent Saxton called a young buck into one of his stands when I hunted with him last year. Pretty comical. Maybe Brent will tell it.

Sheees Rich, that was a year ago! Lets see if I get this right.
was set up on a logging road that was next to a large thicket. I was set up in the fence row right in the corner of the road. After several min of destress calling the young buck came up out of the thick cover and jumped the fence. (This was after the fox squirel thought I was part of the tree and thought he was going to climb over me!) Anyway, the young buck just didnt know what to think of things and didnt seem to want to leave.
Several min of calling and Rich even barking at him didnt seem to bother him at all. He made it down wind of us and still never spooked, he left a couple times and came back, he made a couple compete circles around us, even snorted and done the head bob thing. He just could not figure out why those two bushes were moving around and smelled like humans! I even had a smoke while he was there! Still didnt spook. He was just all screwed up! He ended up just feeding his way off on down the fence line.
Rich, didnt you film all that?
I call alot of deer in here while coyote calling. Most of the time with a destress call. Every once in awhile one will come in while im howling but most of them head the other way after I hit the howler.

Rich
I'm glad you asked Brent to tell the story
Thanks Brent for telling it..Might sound a little far fetched for some, but i believe you told the truth to the best you could remember.."I know Rich could add more"..There has been weird things happen while calling but that is a "dandy story"..Some like to keep there mouth shut when something way out of the ordenary happens..I'm sure others have stories to tell but keeps them to themselves..Don't think anybody would believe them..Your right Rich that was a good'n

Last season, just before our firearms season opened and right at the end of rut, I made my way to a ridgeline looking down the other side to a creek. The area between the ridge and the creek was all in CRP grass. I let out a couple lone howls and immediately, four bucks stood up in that CRP, none of which would have scored under the 140's. They just stood out there snorting and blowing at me for about a minute before bolting. Although they were tired from rut, they were still primed for a fight.
Three years ago, I jhumped a small basket 8 pointer when walking into one of my setups and never gave second thought about it. I sat with my back against a shallow cut back into the embankment and started calling. Immediately, I hear all hell breaking loose behind me and am almost scared to look, but I did. That buck had come back to the call, pissed off to beat all hell, and was standing five feet or so behind me, snorting, thumping his hooves, and staring at the back of my head. I feared he was fixing to make the kinda deer mount that I wouldn't have been bragging about.
In the reverse, a good buddy of mine was out deer hunting and while rattling, was almost run over by a small pack of coyotes that apparently came in to pick up the left overs of the loser.
You just never know.

Melvin,
I have called in a lot of mule does, with coyote howls, fawn bleats and a red fox distress sound. Not once has a buck come in, but sooner or later one will probably follow a doe in. The time of year didn't seem to matter a lot, though spring deer came in real mad and the winter ones just came in. Fall does often come in in small groups, esp. to the fox distress. Last winter I got 32 does and fawns to come in, but I could only fit 19 into the view finder on my little point and shoot camera at once. Since there was nothing else to do, I switched sounds to different prey distresses including fawns. This time they moved off with the prey, and come in to the coyote sounds. If some-one wants the picture, or will post it for me just give me an email addy.

Dogleg, I have had more doe come to the howl than bucks.
There was one time that i howled a buck intentionaly with a closed reed 'Lohman Howler'.
The buck came within 20 feet of us.
A hunting friend, who was with me at the time said,'this is unbelievable!...I explained to him that howling that buck to us,'even surprised me'.
Doe i have howled many times...Bucks,very few.
Like you pointed out, it will happen any time of year.
