Hello. I read your messages on the solunar topic from last year and found it interesting. I know a good bit about statistics, and as you said, to prove that this stuff works would be extremely difficult because of all of the relevant factors that need to be considered, however, I happen to believe there is something to it.
For various reasons, as have been discussed, different predators and prey are likely to prefer more or less light. If so, this could ultimately show up in patterns in hunting success for coyotes and people.
For those of you lucky enough to spend a lot of time hunting at night, can you tell me about any patterns in animal activity that seem to be related to the moon?
Thanks. I enjoyed reading your stuff.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, Andy. Glad to have you on board.
Ther might be some people that religiously log all events, but I'm not one of them. Best I can do is offer a few generalizations. I think in warmer climates, such as the California and Nevada deserts, coyotes wait until it cools off, before becoming active. Often, the action is limited until midnight, or so. Then there is the burst of activity starting around 3:00 A.M. That's all I can say, they are usually slow, just after dark, for a while. The last three hours of darkness can be good.
Hunting improves when the moon goes down, after dark. Hunting is so so without moon, until the moon is rising, at which time, your success will drop significantly. I don't attribute it so much to more or less animal activity, as the fact that your movements are more concealed when the moon is down. But, we can't measure what we don't see, and coyotes are much more light shy, when there is significant moonlight.
Good hunting. LB

Know when the animals are loudest?
Thanks Leonard. I plan to go camping next month and I remember having the most fun camping in the woods when the animals were making a lot of noise. Helps me sleep better too.
Have any gut feeling on when it seems to be loudest in the woods? (full moon or new moon).
Thanks.
