Since, the rain and snow here San Diego probably has kept most of the predator hunters indoors, I went out on Tuesday.

Still lots of snow on the ground. First stand at 6 minutes here comes my sixth bobcat for the year. He get within 60 yards, coming hard so I decide to wait another 20 yards and use the 12 gauge. The cat goes into a dig and decides to circle downwind. No more cat.

Second stand at 4 1/2 minutes a coyote show up at 25 yards on top of a large boulder straight from upwind. Since, the primary area was crosswind, to make a shot it was a 90 degree turn to my right. The coyote turn to look at his rear, I level the 12 gauge and that was that.

Third, fourth, and fifth stands nothing.

Sixth stand 5 minutes into the stand a grey fox was jumping over the caller. 45 yards 12 gauge shot.

12# female.

Seventh stand was made at east end of a creek bed that was lined with oak trees. I pick the last oak tree. The oak was about 30 feet tall and had a base of three feet. I pick that tree because almost all of the snow had already fallen to the ground. Turn the call on and less than 10 seconds, heard what I thought was some snow falling to the ground. Look up and saw a grey fox jumping to the ground about three about my head.

Eighth stand was dry. Ninth stand 4 minutes into the stand had my second bobcat was coming in. It was also coming in hard, till it went into a draw and circle around to the right and came out my next to my SUV, crossed the road within 10 yards of the vehicle.

So I had two chances for a grand slam and could not make the fat lady sing. Cats are killing me this year.

The coyote is a living, breathing allegory of Want. He is always hungry. He is always poor, out of luck and friendless. The meanest creatures despise him and even the flea would desert him for a velocipede.
