I'm not sure if this is a black coyote or more likely a wolf? Not Albert though, it's his partner.

Albert, what color were the eyes and how much did it weigh? Hard to judge the size without knowing the size of your partner.
It's furred up and has a good ruff but the ears look too short and narrow, the muzzle and nose look too broad and blunt and the sagittal crest looks too broad for a pure coyote. The lateral toes on the hind foot are wider than a coyote, more wolf and/or dog to my mind.

Yes it’s a wolf, both Rob (my partner, the guy who shot the wolf)and I feel that it well over a hundred lbs.. Rob has a Suburban that we use to hunt with and we put the coyotes in a very large rubber maid container (I think that it is the largest you can get) it won’t fit across the back of the Suburban goes in lengthwise. Anyway the wolf was curled up in it.

I will send Leonard another picture that he can post it might give a better idea of it size you can see that the top of the head is even with Rob’s knee and it’s still lying on the ground.

Anyway the story. Rob and I where out hunting coyotes we had some luck, as we had a couple of coyotes in the bag. We where in a area that I had been through before but hadn’t really hunted. We were driving down a back road and noticed quite few coyote tracks on the road so we drove a little ways until we found a place we could hide the truck. Found a good spot and walked out into the field about 400 yards we found a knoll with a good view and decided to lay prone on top of it and call. We where about 500 yards from the main bush but there was a patch that jutted out to about two hundred and fifty yards from us.

I did the calling and started out with a couple of lone howls. Nothing answered. Waited a little while and went to the rabbit distress, called for about 6 minutes had seen nothing yet so I howled again. Went to a red fox distress. Almost immediately I noticed a large animal at the edge of the bush five hundred yards away. Good I thought must be a coyote coming, it chased a deer out of the bush. I looked a little closer and noticed it was to dark for a deer. “What the heck is that” I asked Rob. Rob took a look through his scope and said “It’s a wolf”. Rob commented later on how quite is was after he said this.

About this time the wolf decided it was time to come a little closer. As it was coming in a raven swooped at it and landed about 20 ft from the wolf. The wolf stopped and took a look at the raven. After a few seconds the wolf started coming again. At about 250 yards it stopped in a slough bottom and looked at the raven which had flown close to the wolf again. “When do I shoot” said Rob. “Let it get closer” I said. What I really meant is wait for it to get broadside I am worried that those cheap 45 grain hp. You use won’t penetrate far enough for a frontal shot.

At the same time I am thinking what kind of sound should I be making? I calm down a little and come to the decision that leave well enough alone it’s come this far it will probably come the rest with out any changes.

The wolf then decides to start coming in again. It turned almost broadside but is jumping up on it’s hind feet trying to get a look to see what the source of the sound is. I turn off the call and get the crosshairs on it.

It stops “Boom” goes Rob gun. The wolf makes a quick turn and snaps at it side does one good spin I feel that it is hit hard and Tell Rob “Its down”. The wolf makes one small leap and falls to the ground dead.

Rob and I look at each other and give a big thumbs up. We actually just laid there on the ground just trying to take in what happened. After about two minutes we walked down and took a good look at it and took a few pics. Rob is getting rug made out of the skin. We both feel that it is and older Wolf because of the grey on it’s muzzle, and it’s size. I shot a wolf about three years ago and this one is quite a bit bigger than that one was. I estimated the one I shot to be about eighty lbs.

Well not to much to tell but, It was some kind of feeling when it was laying there on the ground.

I didn't look at the eyes my self but i remeber Rob commenting on how yellow they were.

Had a good day made eight stands killed six coyotes and a wolf.

Excellent story and pictures Albert. Beautiful country you have. I would think anybody who loves to call coyotes dreams about getting a wolf someday.

Albert - awesome, pure and simple!

I recognize the profile of that rifle and can even name its' caliber based on the concern about the cheap 45 gr. HP's.

I shoot those bullets often, thouh I'm never faced with a target like that.... You guys need more gun and better bullets!!!! ;<)
