Just returned from a short two hour run in the sw part of Arizona. Made 3 stands, and called two dogs. I took both on the run with my .223. Does anyone use a load in .223 that does not seem to tear the hides up? I am running with a 55 grain bt and it is aweful messy.

Anyhow, it was a good day hunting.

A local guy that shoot's a lot of coyote's like's the Black Hill's 52gr match hollow point. Very acurate and doesn't tear them up. I have yet to shoot one yet. This being my first year trying for coyote's. Try them out.

I used to use 55 gr Blitzkings... did well for the most part... some exits.

Guess I am going to have to take a drive down into SW AZ;

Do you hunt much on the Goldwater testing grounds??

Not much reason to go that way, Norm. But, over toward the southwest corner looks mighty good.

Speaking of 223, wide range of performance, depending on bullet selection, in my opinion.

I think I have had better luck with 52 grain Speers, and 53 Hornady's than heavier bullets. Still, have seen more coyotes fuss after a solid hit from a 223 than any other cartridge. Maybe it's just me?

I have been using 45gr hornet sp. They enter and don't come out. Have yet to tear up a hide with them. I tried the barnes-x varminators Friday night on a coyote and it all most tore off the whole left shoulder. Going to stick with the 45 gr. Plus they drop real nice with that load.

I think you've got to find one that works in your rifle. For example, the 45gr. Win white box varmint rounds worked beautifully out of my Encore. Bang, flop almost every time w/ no exits. A buddy of mine shot the same rounds out of his AR and had explosive entrance wounds with little penetration.

I'm running 60gr. V-max from my AR (1:8) and they seem to do the trick. Your milage may vary.

Yeah, I agree with that, 100%. There is no question that a couple hundred feet per second, one way or another can change the performance of certain bullets dramatically. Different twists, different muzzle velocities, resulting in different RPM, this changes the equation. I need to delve into this a little more thouroughly; have some 45 grain VMax that may see action?

I been shooting the win white box varmit rounds in 45 gr and they do nd awsome job out of the rifle, but if I run them in the AR....They blow big holes! Dont know what the diffrence is but man, big holes! I also shot the nozzler tips and they blew big holes. I went with a bt hp out of the Ar and they do well, not much pelt damage.

I been shooting the 45 gr win white box out of the 22-250 with good results to. For cheap store rounds there hard to beat if you ask me.

I don't know how far out they sell Black Hill's ammo or if any of you guy's have ever even heard of it. The 52gr. match hollow points sell for $13.50 per 50 rounds. They are a huge supplier to the military and the police. They will compete with any other store bought ammo in price and performance!

Don't worry, Dave. We even have Black Hills Ammo out here in the Land of the Fruits and the Nuts. I have used it in my AR. Don't know why, though? I think I won a couple boxes at a raffle, or something? Worked as well as anything else....I don't expect too much from that AR, and am never disappointed.

Out of my 223s, the Hornaday 50gr V-Max shoots tight and it usually doesn't trash pelts.

However, a couple of my central coastal areas really produce alot of nice bobcats so I switched to the 17 Remington. It has kept these prime pelts intact.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, Spyro A. Glad to have you on board. Do I know you, by chance?

I'm really not sold on VMax, have not used enough to know, one way or the other? The only one I do use, on occasion is the 75 VMax in 25 caliber. I do tend to prefer 55 grain .224 bullets for coyotes, though.
