Made a quick stand yesterday before the Fair started. Father in-law called and said to get off my butt and whack some of the coyotes running around.
Normally don't do the cross post thing but it's kinda of quiet around hear since Bill moved on and I wanted to get the local dentists (Rich H) opinion on the adult coyotes teeth. Some of the teeth have wear, some not as much. Did she just abuse her teeth and is still fairly young? The one tooth looks dead. What would you estimate the age?
Anyway, after about 5-6 minutes of calling (howling and a recording of some Rhino handcalling on the Foxpro) I saw some ears coming over the crest of the hill. (top of the hill in line with my scope) Then I see another set of ears followed by yet another pair break over the hill. Three coyotes working their way down the hill. They came all the way down the hill and into the bushes at the bottom. Out of sight. Didn't know where they would come out at. I was watching both sides of the brush waiting for them to emerge. Finally after a few minutes I see them again a little closer and back on the side of the hill. They looked close enough to shoot now. Shot the largest and the others bolted. I gave a loud howl with my voice and one stopped to look back. Shot another. Tried a shot at the 3rd coyote who had by now grabbed a second gear and shot just under it.
Oh well. 2 out of 3. One was an adult female. And the other a male YOY.
Was getting close to 8 am by then so no time for more than one stand. Here's some pics. Ugly summer dogs but you do what you have to do to keep your hunting spots. Have several other landowners wanting a visit soon. Rain is pouring down today.
Shot.....

Coyotes.....

Teeth....

Sorry about that. I'll find another host. Usually use hunt101 but they are down for upgrades for awhile. Photobucket doesn't allow registering till 10 am so I'll get it fixed soon. Thanks [ August 22, 2004, 06:43 AM: Message edited by: Curt2u ]

Hi Curt, if you will send me a lower canine I can tell you exactly how old she is. Otherwise my best guess is definitely greater than 7 years. She's missing the upper left first lateral incisor with attendant bone resorption which means it's been gone for a while. Possibly due to trauma because the wear on the lower right canine is on the lingual aspect of the tooth instead of the distal. Malocclusion. Anyway I would guess 8 years.

Thanks Basil.
Rich, thanks much for the info. Appreciate it. Like Byron said, you have me looking in their mouths now. Kind of interesting.
Thanks again, Curt

For those of you without a copy of the American Journal of Dentistry available, what Rich is trying to say is: Thats an older female, that was most likely cow kicked two years ago, she lost a tooth, but healed up fine, and doesn't shut her mouth the same:)

Not only that; but you can learn a lot more looking in the mouth, than examining the other end....or what comes out of it?
Of course, neither will necesarily help us kill coyotes, or no?
Good hunting. LB

Geez Vic, you are right. Tired as hell last night but didn't want Curt to think I was ignoring him so I posted anyway. I've been a dental technician for 43 years and answered that question the way I would to an account. I'm really not a pompous nerd even if I sound like one at times. Good reality check Vic.

Rich, your never pompous, and certainly not a nerd! You know I just had to jerk your chain a bit:) I always enjoy learning the correct terms pretaining to most anything. I merely wanted to parse your response so the handful of Texans who visit here, understood just what you were trying to say:)

Thanks Vic! I kind of needed that dumbed down a bit too. I think you are spot on with that assessment of the cow kick or maybe even deer as well. Seen a few doe deer getting into it with the coyotes in that area too. Funny to watch.
Rich, thanks again.
Take care, Curt

Understand Rich? Hell I just shake my head and say "no shit" like I understood what he said. Don't want to look stupid you know
"I'm really not a pompous nerd even if I sound like one at times"
Those are two words I would have never used to descibe you Rich .
All kidding aside Rich, I would like to know what you said in Eglish. Could you (after a nap) show us a diagram or explain the difference between the teeth. I can age a deer pretty well with a chart. Is there a chart or photos for coyotes some where we can access that shows what to look for? [ August 23, 2004, 08:33 PM: Message edited by: Byron South ]

Here's a couple of them.

Comparing curt's picture to the coyote aging chart, I was guessing maybe around 6 yrs plus. But that one I3 on the top had me alittle confused. Rich might be right.
Curt, Too bad you didn't take a picture of that little ones mouth. Might give us a idea on the apperence of milk teeth. (Joke)

Thanks
