Since I am an absolute newbie to varmint and predator hunting.....

What is handy to have in a fanny pack?

I know some of the common things would be.

1. Plenty of ammo.
2. Rubber gloves.
3. One or more sharp knives.
4 Handi wipes.
5. First aid kit.

Now help me out on the not so common things that are just handy as the dickens.

Thanks

Jim B

Thanks

Jim

Just goes to show you?
It really depends on how you view predator hunting, and your style.

For instance, I hardly ever make more than a single stand, before returning to the truck, where all those things are kept. Even ammo. I have a certain amount with me, almost a ritual. Six rounds, maybe five, depending on the last stand?

Never have used rubber gloves handling an animal, never bother with it, although I think it's a great idea. I just wash my hands, back at the truck.

Come to think of it, I usually have a pocket knife with me?

I have a first aid kit the size of a suitcase, again, in the back of the truck.

But, if I'm intent on a walkabout, I usually have a small backpack with some ordinary gear and maybe some liquid and a few snacks, about what I would have for mountain mule deer hunting, except for the binocs. Lately, I have been seriously considering a light weight stool.

I think every man's list would be different, and, like you; I'd be interested in knowing what others think is essential.

Good hunting. LB

if you plan to skin in the field... having a tail stripper in you pack or truck is a nice to have...

if it is a walk about... some buttwipe is a nice to have,

6 to 10 calls can be found in my packs... a pistol for the less than perfect shots...

I like to have a gps available... why... to mark those places that you stumble upon some great calling location on your walk about... even when going from the truck to your stand...

I usually take my cellphone and digital camera. If I'm hunting a new area on private ground I usually take along air photos with the property lines drawn on them so I stay on the right parcels.

A cheap camera and a spare roll of film.

I'm leaving tomorrow for four days of calling with Scott Huber and Cal Taylor. Besides the gear on my calling belt I will have two digital camcorders on each stand, a tripod, ten Mini DV tapes and a huge grin.

Rich, don't tell me you're going to film without your boom-mic operator, key grip, lighting, wardrobe, stunt coordinator and assistant producers... Won't you feel unprepared? [Big Grin]

BTW Jim, if I might suggest a length of rope or nylon strap. Most people would use this as a drag rope, but in AZ, dragging's not a good idea. Tied to head and back legs it makes an easy to transport coyote purse.

I go very light when I'm calling. Two distress hand calls, and a small howler, hand full of bullets and my rifle, that's it.Oh, and maybe my range finder if there are long shot possibilities. Those coyotes can get very heavy to carry when you have to many other things you're packing too. [Wink]
