Author Topic: Just the way it goes Norm Knows what it's all about Member # 240 posted December 20, 2003 12:21 PM                    Well, it is weekends like this one when my wife insists that I need to be committed... I put over 500 miles on my truck, made over 30 stands and didn't call one coyote... I hunted the pines around Stoneman Lake over to Anderson Mesa Wildlife protection area; The desert area north of Wickenburg out towards alamo lake... There is always tomorrow !!!! Hope everyone is having better success than I... Tim and Bruce, how did the cat calling go? Tim, hopefully you didn't let Jay lead you astray in any way. Tyler went calling yesterday pm by himself. Called one coyote to the first stand, got video. Two javelina to the second stand, got video of them chasing Mattie to the stand and then Mattie chasing them away from the stand. Three coyotes to the third stand, got video. I went out on Friday morning and got busted either walking to a stand or just getting out of my truck FOUR times in one morning. And to top it off, I missed another fifty yard shot on a standing broadside coyote. My longest shot to date on a coyote has been 420 yards. I routinely make 200 yarders. But when it comes to a 50 yard chip shot I go to hell in a handbasket. I think I'm hurrying the close ones worrying about getting busted and relaxing on the long ones. I'm definately going to have to work on that. Most places I end up on have shots of 70 maybe 100yds. I may have to go back up to the anderson mesa area as there are 1000yd shot opportunities there... I couldn't believe it though... wildlife protection area in the middle of prime hunting habitat. Plenty of long distance shot opportunities in Northern AZ anywhere along I-40 from Seligman through to New Mexico. Now if you're willing to go all the way to Anderson Mesa, you might just want to keep on going a few miles to just south of Winslow. Heap big coyote populations out there. Good luck. Need to get out and hunt NW of Almo late as well. Member # 12 posted December 21, 2003 06:31 AM                   Norm, Stoneman Lake? No use calling there, I got them all killed out! hehe Really, only a few coyotes around that country. No pups raised for the last 2 years. Only coyotes you call will be very old suckers, and darn few of them. 5 years ago, I couldnt keep them off the calves and mule deer fawns, but mother nature sure took care of that problem. Also that area has been hit with parvo really bad as well. All vet clinics in northern Az. reporting outbreaks of parvo, and it is on the rise. Bad news for coyotes and grey fox for sure. My son lost 10 of 12 Lab pups to parvo a few months ago. Parvo is bad stuff for sure. It will hitch a ride on a vehicle tire of your truck and is transported to anywhere you go. I agree with Tonlocus, hunt the area between Payson and Winslow. More coyotes there than just about anywhere. FWIW Steve -------------------- Yes, we did produce a near-perfect republic. A friend loaned me a real good cat dog to help train Hooch, and she never even opened the entire day. We didn't see any cat tracks either. One good thing, she didn't open on the deer tracks.
