Well first, I would not bother with lottery tickets. I'd save my money. Second, I would not have a shotgun on stand with me. With my Leupolds set at three power and both eyes wide open and on the target I can aquire a sight picture on a coyote at five feet, and have. That eliminates the decision making problem. Third, a question. Why didn't you sit tight and coax them in with a lip squeak? A muted bird trill? A faint rodent squeak? Were they about to make your downwind? Geez Lance. You need to camp out in a medicine lodge, say a billion "Hail Marys", take a homeless person to dinner, make a donation to PETA, spend a few hours chanting in front of a Butsadan, sacrifice a virgin. All on the same day. Your Mojo is flat-ass gone. Man, I feel vulnerable just talking to you. I hope this $hit isn't contagious.

I agree with Rich. I'd have slowly shouldered the rifle, even if it allowed them that two seconds to make cover. And, as soon as I had a decent sight picture, (like Rich, with both eyes open) I would have lip squeaked my brains out. I think there would have been a real good chance of getting a shot at any one of the three. Then, you are on your own; pick up that shotgun, or whatever makes you feel good.
These things happen, but you really need to put that first one down.
Good hunting. LB

LOL Now there's and oxymoron if ever I heard one!
Unfortunately I was a dumbass, and I volunteered myself to make calls again... all my spare time is now gone. I promised a couple calls out by Christmas, and I doubt I'll get any hunting done 'til after that.
And even then hunting and productive don't seem to be able to get together for me!
Still beats mowin' the lawn!

It's difficult to determine what to do without seeing the habitat.
If I had a group of coyotes located in thicker habitat where I expected the contact to be close, I would take the shotgun and get as many of them in to shotgun range as you can and start laying them down.
Whatever was left I would kill on a different day, with a different sound, from a different direction.
Handling coyotes on a stand starts with setting yourself up with the habitat so you can handle mulitiple coyotes on the stand.
It's difficult to keep them all bunched as they tend to spread out but I have lip squeaked and had them charge to get the last coyote within shotgun range. Leveled him, took the next closest on the departure. Usually hope for two if the habitat is thick and the contact is close.
Each situation is different. When they feel secure, they may not even leave after the gun shot. I have seen whole family groups taken down when they just insisted on sticking the heads out of a cornfield despite the gunfire.
One of the most difficult things to do is to kill a standing coyote at a distance when you have a charging coyote in your periphial (sp?) vision at closer range. A person has a tendancy to rush the shot.

Hey, Scott! Nice to see you. Always good advice.
What's this about lip squeaks repelling coyotes? Talk to me, Lance. LB

Lance, I get clostrophobic (?) when I have heavy cover in all directions. It drives me crazy. I just hate it because coyotes circle downwind and leave. I know there is a lot of places down south, in the East, and in heavily timbered country where there isn't any other options. In that case, I like to call with a partner downwind of the person doing the calling.
No, the house is far from complete. Doing most of it myself so it has taken forever. It's at least starting to resemble a house. LOL!
I just stopped by to see what's been going on.
Later!
