Yesterday I loaded some 220 swift rounds and went to the range and fired a nice small group. Pleased with what I saw I decided to make a trip out for some calling. Well after the wife gave me my 'to do list' and the chores were finished I had only enough time to make one stand before dark. Just as I was heading out the door I decided to load the rifle and leave the bolt up. As I loaded the rounds and ran one in the pipe it froze as if the brass was too large or something. I tried to pull the bolt back and could not get it back or the round out. So I parked the Swift and grabbed the 17 rem. Got the chesapeake bay retriever out of the kennel and headed out. I headed out to a location I have been seeing coyotes while bowhunting which is just about 4 miles north of my home. We slipped out in the area and I told the dog to go play. He started messing around when I cut the ap 6 loose. Within a few minutes I could see a coyote about 400-500 yards away headed our way. My dog was now lying down spinning around on his back in some 2 ft tall weeds. At about 300 yards the coyote stops and starts barking at my dog. My dog sits up and looks at the coyote as if 'bring it on'. Now its close to dark and the coyote is just barking and semi howling at us. I cut loose with the Higgins Howler and he started becoming very aggitated at us.
Well to make a long story short I wish I had my Swift and I would be posting a picture instead of words. If the coyote was in a dirt field I would have shot him with the 17 rem but the tall grass kept me from being confident on a kill. Well there is always today to get him.
Went home and tapped the bolt back to remove the round. Out of 20 rounds loaded 6 will not run up into the chamber. Will work on that today.

Randy, check the case neck diam. on your Swift loads. You may need to resize your cases or start turning your case necks. I turn the necks first thing to ensure even case neck thickness. Have any questions holler at me.

I took the time today to figure out the problem. I have a neck sizing die and I think the brass is starting to grow. I took care of the problem today by ordering a redding body sizing die and wilson case trimmer today from sinclair. Should take care of the problem. Randy

See, I've been wanting a nice little .17 for myself too. Only problem is, I too am afraid of grass deflecting the bullets! [Wink]

I"m not afraid of grass deflection with the 17 its just that my 17 has a redfield 3x9 and my swift has a 12x leupold. With the leupold I can see the coyote better 'aim small, miss small'

This summer I was working up a load for the 17 when I was shooting at a old coal mine that my buddy bought for a hunting area. I shot at the target and heard a 'ping' from behind the target. I walked back to see the bullet went through some tall weeds and hit a old piece of angel iron. Upon close inspection I found the 25gr hollow point passed right through the 1/4" thick piece of steel. The 17 is the real deal.
Last year I did shoot some coyotes with the 17 and had to blood trail them or use my dog to find them. I found that I was shooting them too far forward or too high in the body. When I shot them in the rib cage they dropped in their tracks or close by.

I am a police officer in Indiana. Several months back I heard a car/deer accident not too far from where I was parked[detective car]. I drove to the accident location and found the deer with broken legs. I had the 17 in the trunk. I dispatched the deer and I am here to tell you that it dropped like a sack of hammers when shot with the 17.

I know my coyote numbers are not as high as some of you guys but last year I called in 63 coyotes here in southern Indiana. I killed 31 all with the 17 rem. Out of the 63 several were at the 300-400 yard mark. I bought the 220 swift for those that stand out there and watch. This year I have killed 3 and have called in 7. Two of the three were shot with the swift at 300+yards. The third one shot with the17 at 75 yards. The area I hunt is really mixed. Open fields as a result of huge strip mines[coal] and large and small patches of woods. I use the 17 when I hunt the wood lots and field edges and the swift for the open stuff.

Loco,

The solution is simple, don't go calling anyplace where you don't have visibility to shoot. If the grass is taller than the kill zone on a coyote, call someplace else.

One of the things I love so much about my 17 Remington, is it's ability to almost surgically place a bullet into a coyote standing behind a bush. Find at little 1-2" hole in the brush over the kill zone, and make the shot.

That bullet is going to hit exactly where the crosshairs rest when the sear breaks. The bad side to my 17 is that I no longer have an excuse when I miss. [Eek!]

I really wish I had the opportunity to shoot one. It looks like tons of fun. I was only kidding about the grass deflection though! [Wink]
