Left the house this morning for a quick stint in the mesquite. Had it planned to get out for three stands, then back at the crib to have coffee with momma by 9ish. Had four rounds down in the magazine and threw three spare rounds in my front pants pocket of camo. Made first stand with no visitors, but noticed my truck keys sticking out a hole in my front pocket, lucky for me the clicker/door opener thingy had prevented them from slipping out onto the ground; although my spare rounds were no longer spare, they were gone:) Second stand was one of those golden moments, opened with my favorite, the cottontail distress, and spotted at least two coyotes pounding in and out the mesquites at maybe 150 yards. Why one coyote always leads the race by 50 yards, I'll never know, but indeed this was the case....again. I let it get to close, while waiting for the other two to get in the no-fly zone. Im shooting a new toy this season, a 19 Calhoon hornet, which has a trigger way nicer than my standard battery of wackers. Ive never been a trigger snob, priding myself in being able to adjust to any kind of pull or creep and still shoot reasonably well for a hayseed. Well, this trigger went off as I was thinking about beginning the press, and of course I missed. Unlike some fellas on the various boards, I occasionally miss and gawd forbid....sometimes even cripple a coyote. I know Quinton and I have both confessed before, we miss or cripple at times, so I feel as though Im in good company:) The upshot is, I was able to adjust, a follow up shot put number one down, number two in line was flaring off to the right, but my stubby numb finger managed the correct press this time and he fell down hard while loping off. I used Steve Craigs advice and switched to the coyote fight for food sound, and I'll be damned the last big dog coyote, turned around from his retreat, and charged hard back to the sceen of the crime and I smacked him with a frontal chest shot as he was coming straight in. All in all, I was a happy camper, a true triple. I sometimes manage a triple or two each year, just not this early, usually around feb.,when love is in the air. Last year,I had one amazing stand where six coyotes charged from three different points of the compass, and I was able to kill five of the six, the absolute best Ive ever done without a partner. Any time we take mulitples, we've got to grin......it don't get much better!,and I was grinnin'this morning, four rounds, three coyotes. I even beat my time frame, made it back to house, with a half dozen doughnuts, and was sipping coffee by 8:00! Moral of the story; check your gear ie: pants pockets for holes, or have a box of ammo in the truck.

Everyone I talk to that knows you says that you are a wizard with a firearm.
I would have given a great deal to have filmed that stand.

Never put together a triple by myself like that.
I missed one, and lost one, on the same day last time out though. And I just confessed to it. So there may be hope for me getting that triple someday yet...

Good report, Vic. I could visualize the whole thing. Anytime you dump three on a stand, we never deduct style points, for stupid animals; and they do get smart, fast.
I'd love to get that "coyotes fighting over food" sound. I have never heard it; but my gut tells me that it's perfect for multiples. And a lot more.
I got six, once, and five once, but never killed four on a stand, that I recall? I've had many "trips" at night, but those in the daytime are harder to come by. Again, it depends on the area.
I remember a few times, usually when calling in a wash, choked with mesquite, where we have had so many coyotes, you just couldn't keep track of them. Once, I thought there were twelve, and another time 15, and another time, we were pretty sure we had about seventeen, playing hide and seek. Once the shooting starts, it's hard to keep them interested. It must be nerves, because I don't remember getting more than two or three from a pack that size?
That time I got six, it was almost like cheating because there were nine coyotes, all out in the open, standing in mud, across a pond, and I was prone, on top of a pile of gravel, and the sun was in their eyes. Don't get any better than that.
I love talking about it, by the way! And, yes, I had to reload.
Good hunting. LB

Yeah, I love talking about it too, because I ain't doing that crazy stuff again. One ten minute stand a year is enough for me lol.

Great shooting AZ!! Thank you for the play by play as well. You know now that you are going to miss the next 40-yard broad side shot don’t you. LOL That’s what always happens to me after I have a good day. Last year I shot something like 10 or 12 in a row with out a miss and I was feeling pretty good about myself until I missed two coyotes that were 50 yards or under IN THE SAME DAY!! I was so pissed I thought I was going to have a nosebleed. LOL I guess that’s what keeps us going back. The good days and the bad ones.
Good hunting.

Way to go Vic! I must have just missed you at the donut shop. I was there just a little before 8, (Had to go to the school this morning, didn't get to hunt.)
Give me a jingle if you want to go try again. I won't even ask you to try any new camo ideas.
DAA, one of the neat things he forgot to mention, is that he is a true lefty, shooting a right hand bolt action.

Quinton; your post made me recall my worst nightmare of a miss. Two years ago I had fine string of hits like you described, then had a small female trot into a gorgeous evening stand, sun was literally 30 seconds from setting and the whole grassy field spotted with yuccas I was hunting, turned gold. She stopped, I settled the crosshair right behind her shoulder, I fired and she ran off. Now Ive been shooting blanks for 27 years, but this is the first time I thought my rifle was shooting them!....I paced that shot off at 18 steps, I still don't know for the life of me what happened?.....guess I missed:)

It was probably that damn .17 Rem you use.
LOL I try and put all of those traumatic instances behind me but a few keep surfacing from time to time. For instanse I once had 5 coyotes within 40 yards of me and never even got a shot off. One time I had 4 coyotes come trickling down out of a draw and was heading for my down wind at about 200 yards. The plan was to stop the lead coyote right before I thought he would catch my wind, shoot him through the shoulders and then work over his buddies. Well as most well thought out plans go it didn’t work. The firs coyote went on by fallowed by the second and third despite my best efforts to stop them. Finally coyote #4 would cooperate and he stopped giving me a beautiful broad side shot at 200 yards. I let out my breath and ever so gently squeezed the trigger. “BANG” went the gun and off to the races with the coyote!!! WTF I thought and then as I lifted my head I saw the only scrap of vegetation between the coyote and I (a Soap Weed) drupe gently to the side. The Soap Weeds stem was cut half way through and frayed on the back. I don’t know if it blew the bullet up or it just knocked it off course but I guess it makes no difference the coyote was gone and a bit smarter at that. LOL
I have had my share of successes but I have dang sure had my share of blunders. If I dusted off some old memories I could probably keep you guys entertained for days.
Good hunting.

AZ, sounds like a great day... some hunting, getting some coyotes and pleasing Mother. Sure makes the world go by much more enjoyably anyway...

You're right, Tim. That is impressive. I don't think I could do that? Lefties are adaptive; got to give them credit, in this right hand world.
Good hunting. LB
