How'd your hunt go? Did Rich bring his howly thingy and how long to you get one of your own?

Three stinking coyotes!!! That’s it!! If I were a betting man I would have bet my sole that we would have killed 6 or 8 coyotes. We saw quite a few though. I picked Rich up at the airport at about 4:15 and we made it to our first spot about an hour later. Right off the bat we spotted a coyote and pulled a short stalk on it and I made the shot. We made two or three stands and ran out of luck and light for that day.
The next morning I took him to a large meadow down on the river. I like to hunt river meadows early in the mornings because the coyote’s frequent them at that time and they are easy to spot. We saw 3 coyotes but they were either running or out of range. From there we moved south about a mile to the hills. Again right off the bat we spotted a coyote but he had seen us first. It was my fault as I toped the saddle to quickly. While I was moping about my sloppiness Rich spotted another coyote moving down a fencerow. We waited until he got behind a small rise and set up to try and call him. No luck.
From there we headed west and made a stand or two and Rich spotted a coyote a few hundred yards out but it was gone in a flash as well.
We went back to the pickup and then moved on to my next “honey hole” LOL At that ranch we saw I believe 4 coyotes and I shot one and missed one. The first stand I squeaked up a couple of small drainages and then when we moved on, not 75 yards away we spooked a coyote out of his bed. Apparently he wanted nothing to do with my calling. He got into some reads before I could get a shot off so we were SOL there as well. Three or 4 stands later I decided to move on.
As I pulled into the area we were to hunt I wanted to hide the pickup in a low spot. As I drove over the bank I could see that it was a perfect area for coyotes to bed down at but it was to late we had already exposed our selves. I knew it was a bad deal and told Rich to keep his eyes peeled. Sure enough a coyote bolted. I baled out, yipped at the coyote, got him to stop and I made the shot. I looked over at Rich and said “did you get that” He said there he goes!!! I knew I had dropped mine so it was a seconded one. He was “guessing” around 300 yards and running nearly strait sideways but I managed to get one shot off out of pure frustration and of course missed. While I was throwing a temper tantrum Rich says “Theirs another one.” Well I screwed that up as well and never even got a shot off. LOL We moved a few hundred yards to the south and maid a stand. A couple of does showed up but that was it. I retrieved the coyote and checked the range again and it was 334 yards or so.
That made it 1 for 10 on the day and 2 for 11 total. LOL Not good.
Off to the next spot we go. The first stand we drew a blank but on the second one we scored! Rich got it on tape as well. It looked very nice in the replay as the coyote was just over my left shoulder when it went down. We called nothing but deer until the second to the last stand when a coyote came in on Riches side and then spooked. I didn’t even get to see it.
All and all I was disappointed in the hunt but I enjoyed Riches company very much. I am sure we would have done much better hunting had I scheduled the hunt later in the year. It was 85 degrees Saturday and most of the corn was still in making the hunting tuff. LOL You may want to check the accuracy of this post with Rich and my mind tends to block out traumatic experiences. LOL
I will post a picture I took of the coyotes later.
Good hunting.

I was just reading this post to my family. I told my wife that RichHiggins just flew all the way to Nebraska to film Quinton. I got a great little laugh when my daughter asked in wide-eyed amazement, "Chickens can fly?!?!" LOL [ October 19, 2003, 03:03 PM: Message edited by: Locohead ]

Yeah, we need to check accuracy with Chiggins.
Good report, Quinton. Hey, I know how you feel though!
Good hunting. LB

Uh-oh. You saw more critters in two.three days than I'll probably see all season. Sounds like you had a good time, despite the "unplanneds".

It’s a good thing I have a wide-angle lens. Other wise I wouldn’t have been able to get all the kills in one picture. LOL

Cdog911, We should hope we will do a bit better in CO as long as it is not 85 FREAKING degrees out. I took Rich to the very best areas I had to offer and we did see a bunch of coyotes. When the weather cools down a bit I will have better luck. I just feel bad that he flew all the way up here for a bad hunt. When you only call in one coyote it makes your theories and techniques appear worthless on film. The coyotes may have won the battle yesterday but the war is not over yet. LOL
Hunting coyotes is “progressive” throughout the season. If I were to do it over again I would have taken him to bigger country rather than near the agricultural areas. I should have known better. This time of year a coyotes patterns in bigger and more open areas is much more predictable. Like they say “hindsight is 20/20 LOL.
Good hunting.

I remember when Scott reported his hunt with Quinton last winter and he called Q "a coyote killing machine". Scott nailed it. Quinton harvests fur professionally from Nov. to March. That's how he makes his living. 212 coyotes in that 4 month period is his top total. He is absolutely focused on the job. He doesn't trap, harvests them with that bad-a$$ 220. It is a tool of his trade and he is expert with it. I have video of him making a killing shot at 334 lasered yards. He uses 3 primary techniques to take as many coyotes as possible- hike, spot, stalk and shoot, drive, spot and shoot, hike, hike, hike, hike, call and shoot. We did a lot of the latter, in the sandhills. Invisioned sandhills as being sand dunes like in the west. huh-uh. These are giant dunes held together with cactus, yucca and stickers. Q calls from the prone position in these damn things. So did I, brought a lot of it back home with me, imbedded. I told Quinton that I wanted to capture on film his technique and style without influencing his stands at all. Make the hunt and stands as usual without regard for me and I would keep up and out of the way. Kind of a mistake. I missed a couple of things on video because he acted quickly before the camera turned on. I have a blown Achilles tendon and can't flex the left foot, have to walk with it turned sideways. Quinton's legs are 3 feet longer than mine and keeping up with him on those marathon hikes was a chore. No mercy from Q. I got some killer video of a hunter with a different approach than most of us, a great interview and some really funny video of his manic Jack Russell having a couple of pyschotic episodes. Quinton is great company, terrific sense of humor and very knowledgeable about what he does. He and his Dad were very gracious host(his Dad is a killer cook) and I had an absolutely terrific, memorable time. I did get some video of two huge mule bucks that stood within yards of us, One of them got up out of his bed about 10 feet from Quinton and stotzed to a finger ridge 10 yards in front of us. It turned toward us and slamed it's hoof down. Q thought it might take us on for a second.I had a great time and I thank you very much Quinton.
