I think Mr. Higgins has passed away Loco? No returned e-mails no returned phone calls. Maybe he just don’t like me anymore. If he is still alive and out there somewhere could some one please tell him to contact me. LOL
Good hunting.

After two days of hard running. He finally found a tree. The tree is being circled by a pissed off Mexican fighting bull with half a tail. There may be some video, But expect it to be a tad shaky.

I think they are both in Jail, 25 miles south of my house.
Jay was supposed to call Saturday afternoon so I could meet up with them. I haven't heard from him since last Friday.
I never should have told them about that Cathouse in Mexico.

Hey! I made it back. Saturday night is somewhat of a blur and I apologize for not calling Tim. The numbers on my cell phone were way too small to read in order to make the call. Could have used you though. Everybody went to sleep on me. I didn't realize I was that boring.
Anyway fellas. This week I enrolled in school in order to make something of myself. Last weekend was an eye-opener. After hanging out with Texicans and Okies, I decided to get out of my rut. Starting out, my studies will involve driving. I'm thinking maybe NASCAR. I'm considering sponsors as I type.

Were those damned out-of-towners, sniffin around our hunting grounds again Tim? With all the garbage eating coyotes around Scottsdale and surrounding area, you'd think they would have had a safari right in richies backyard! Oh well....grass is always greener on the other side I suppose.

I ended up in Wilcox on Saturday evening anyway. The wife got the Arts in the park festival in Sierra Vista, confused with the Rex Allen Days in Wilcox. We drove up, looked around at the wrong festival, ate dinner and drove home.
She went to the Art thing the next day while I was at the range. Dang, second year in a row I've missed the artsy fartsy thing.
Where were you Sunday morning? I called in seven Wets before the shoot!

Actually we watched 2 Wets but later on found out it was Higgins and Pup. LOL. I tried to get the BP to toss Pup in a van for wandering too far away from Oklahomeless, but they thought it would not be fitting.
We stayed at the Quality Inn South of town. There must have been 3,000 tractors in town for the parade. Some even ran. I could not believe the number of Police on duty. Incredible!
It's not that the grass is greener Vic, It's because the property is unaccessible due to locked gates. We just wanted some privacy. Also we needed a place we could see long distances for filming. Objective accomplished. Besides they are simply easier to call in down your way. [ October 09, 2003, 08:28 PM: Message edited by: Jay Nistetter ]

The locked gates were meant to keep the riff-raff out, didn't work this last weelend. I see why vickie doesn't leave home, the grasshopper-eatin, virgin-eared mehican co-yo-tays stampede the first toot on a call.

I think we all know who to blame......
the coyote gods, right?
Too much success will do that. (I hear; don't know, for a fact)
But enough about "illegal" body counts, you guys were supposed to be hunting coyotes.
Details, Mr Higgins, we need details.
Good hunting. LB

Were we actually in or close to the hunting grounds of Vic?
I knew I was in the company of greats, but I did not know I was in the vicinity of the burning bush. I would of removed my shoes.
We never did go and look for the Bearded Lady at the festival. Not for sure one was there, but I felt fortunate that we found lodging for the couple of nights that we were in town.
I have become fluent in coyote verbalization.
I guess that I should share my 1/6 of the stories out there and dispell any myths that are being started.
Gary was and is a gracious host, allowing us to hunt some prime country. As was the landowner for allowing us in with him. Thanks Gary
There were several pranks pulled, some of which worked and some of which almost worked,( the rattlesnake in MY floorboard) Thanks Jay. I have it tanning in the fridge at this time.
I always like the way Rich Higgins works a stand and call. I have incorporated some of his technique in my stands from the last visit and it was like a refresher course on this trip, NO sunshine up the skirt just fact.
I had the pleasure of shaking the hand of Byron South, along with hunting with him. I watched him shoot his first Az. coyote. Great guy and good caller as well. I carry a butt cushion that is as long and broad as my back. I don't like to fidget or be uncomfortable on stand. Byron made several stands that I saw on his knees. I don't know how he did it. I also seen a picture of Byron on his knees, but I can't comment more than that.
I can attest to the aerodynamics of a dummy e-caller, as well as the shot proof or lack thereof. I was put up to the task of filming a prank on Byron. Rich Higgins was walking Byron through the finer points of the caller and Byron and the e-caller were definitely making the grade until Rich decided to give the unit a toss, on a bet of Jay hitting it or not. I did not know that Jay was such a good shot. If it had of been the real thing it would of received an good dose of BB's in the posterior electronics. Never the less Byron did a double take until he realized he had been had all on video. Laughs all around when the unit didn't have a scratch.
It did not work out that I could ride with Jay and hunt with him. I did make a trade with him although I wouldn't call it a trade , but rather an Oklahoma switch. I walked away from the deal with a rattlesnake skin, and a beautiful call. He is a great guy with an awesome grasp on the Okie dialect and its derivatives. I hope that my future trips will include some stand time with him.
I was offered and I accepted an invitation for a guided bear hunt with Gary. It will be a good hunt.
I finally seen my first in the wild rattler. Byron dispelled any myth about him being slow. The boy can pick them up and put them down. We were walking back to the truck after the first stand and Byron squawked and did a quick Texas two step towards stage left. I eased(jumped hellanxiously far) over behind Higgins. I looked back at what seemed to be a perfect pile of cow crap. It looked to be just about the right age to toss at your buddy or gripeing sister. That is until it started to move. Byron and Rich messed with it a little while, I am not impressed with this still. I have been raised that there are two types of snakes Rattlers and Cobras(if they don't have rattles, then they must be a cobra), and that there is enmity between us and them. Target practice always ensued after a snake spotting. We let this little guy go on about his way , but not without a few pictures. Snakes have a lingering effect on a fellow's reflexes, which I can attest to , by Byrons quick footed responses to the Horned Lizard, a few hours later in the day. I did leave with not so much hatred for them, but will still exercise the leav'em the hell alone method. I had some success on this trip, and one such coyote provided some continuing education with the aging of coyotes by teeth wear. Now I grew up around horses and was very much interested by Rich's method. Thanks again Rich for your time.
That is really what this trip was to me, a chance to meet a few buddies and hunt. A chance to pick the brains of coyote hunters that have alot to share at the cost of the question. I know and stated the term "who Knows, who will ever know" on some things. BUT sometimes coyotes do act similar and some guidelines can be drawn from that as a base for how we set up call etc. NOt that every coyote is the same , but some fall close to some of the guidelines.
Several were called and some were shot. Both days were a success and I left as always wishing I had more time or the ability to move, job, family, house, etc. and with the sneaking suspicion that there is more to it, than,"Any Ol' Howl will do"
later pup

I took three days off for this hunt and have had to make up for it double time this week at work. This hunt originally was to be solely with Ronnie Robison for the Masters of the Call video. Ronnie's health took a turn for the worse and he couldn't make it. I hunted all day Friday with Byron filming his calling technique for the video. Got some cool video of him centering a coyotes ear at about 35 yards in front of the camera. Pup and I hunted with Byron Sat until noon. I got some video of Byron getting some video for his next video.(read it again and it will make sense) Pup and I hunted together Sat. afternoon and all day Sunday. The way he works a stand and handles a coyote is flawless. Pup has mastered the band howler. He begins his stands with the most beautiful low-key enticing howls you would want to hear. He sounds a lot like Robb Krause. In fact his open reed work sounds just like Robbs. It's a pleasure to sit on a stand with them and just listen to them play their songs. Jay is the only other caller I've hunted with that can coax sounds like that out of a call. A thing of beauty. Pup called in and shot an old male that had worn his lower incisors down to the gingiva. The rancher was delighted to have that one removed. I brought along a Garrity 6 volt lantern, green in color that looked just like a Foxpro. Byron thought so also when I through it in the air and Jay centered it with his 12 ga. Beautiful shot! It was close enough when he hit it that the shot column had only opened a couple of inches. Pup caught Byrons facial expressions on my camera and they are priceless. I'm hunting with Bruce Kennedy tomorrow and Q Wagoner next week. I'm getting used to being entertained, guys. Good entertainment or really great food, either one will do.

Byron, Jay, and Gary made a stand a short way from the two track that pup and I were driving on. As we passed them we saw what looked like a man standing with Byron kneeling in front of him. We scoped it through the binos and saw that it was a misshapen fence post. Still, it just looked wrong. Especially since Byron is the man that Crow Woman sent an inflateable anatomically correct sheep, overnite delivery, so he would have it for this hunt. Scary, Huh?

Byron with his first Az. coyote. He did a great job of calling and handling this one. [ October 11, 2003, 02:58 PM: Message edited by: Rich Higgins ]

Heck, I just fond this thread. Thanks for the invite out to Arizona. Had a wonderful time. I guess they pretty much told it the way it was. Rich and I hunted the first day by ourselve's. Rich called in a group of maybe 4 or 5 white dogs. Later in the day I called in a coyote, but got busted before he cleared some brush for a shot. That evening rich called one in but, he stoped behind a bush. I didn't have a shot at his chest so I tried for a head shot, and shot him in the ear right next to his head. That night we met up with Jay and Gary and followed them down to Wilcox, "cannon ball run" style. Thanks jay for running interference . The next morning Rich, Pup and I hunted together. I called up a double but they went downwind and shortly left the scene. I should have killed or at least shot at them as they were stoped a few time. I just thought they would come closer for the camera. Another stand that morning did produce one that wasn't so camera shy, and I finally killed my first Arizona coyote. Thanks to Pup I've got it on film. Pup was up next and called in a coyote and killed him at about 40 yards just as I was getting the camera on him. We met up with Jay and Gary for lunch. After lunch I went with Jay and Gary. We were using the Fox Pro calling by an apple orchard when a coyote came in and Jay shot it with his 450 fur gun, on video. While we were watching that one Gary was watching a pair come in from the other direction. When Jay lit the 450 they reversed and lit the after burnwers. I must say I was impressed with the 450's perfomance on tough game like coyotes. That was about it for the day. We made a couple more stands but had no takers. The next morning we called in another pair. I was coaxing one in and had him dead to rights, but was waiting for him to clear the brush for the camera (Jay was running my camera)He spooked just before he was in the clear maybe 25 yards. Gary and I cut him down in a hail of gunfire. We made a few more unproductive stands and road around looking for badgers. No badgers. We met Rich and Pup at the gate, so they could pull they Trap shooting prank with the Fox Pro imposter. Had some laugh's, and said our good-bye's, thus ending my first Arizona coyote hunt.
Thanks Guy's I had a great time. Sure wish Ronnie could have made it.

As far as totals, I'm not really sure what Friday produced, but Saturday and 1/2 day Sunday the totals for the five of us were 6 coyotes down. 12 or 14 coyotes were called and one bobcat and a Fauxpro.
We had a cat in on one stand and didn't kow it after we messed up an easy gimmie on a coyote. I was lip squeaking a coyote at 20 yards and Gary thought it was his que to shoot. He thought I was carrying the camera. I wasn't. I was folling with this dog just about ready to bust it with a 480. After talking about how badly we blew it, a bobcat took off for parts unknow from just a few yards away from us.
