Don't worry, Quinton. Unless you give me a Mulligan? Remember that thread about excuses? I have a bunch, some I can't even share.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
Hotter than hell! And guess what? It wasn't a dry heat, like they always say. No, it was hot and humid. Well over 100 degrees, it's been a long time since I drank so much liquid!
One word: Brutal.

Sounds like the last two months in Kansas. Never have figured out where all the humidity comes from when you're buttdeep in the worst drought in recorded hsitory.
On a positive note, I've been visiting with landowners and have clues on about a half-dozen dens. Called two stands Monday morning past and all I saw was a small herd of deer including a nice 5X5 buck, still in velvet, who'd go about 140 or 150's. Two smaller bucks, both <110.
Too bad about the heat. You do your best with what you're handed. As long as you had a good time, that's all that really matters.

Oh. Did I mention the washed out roads?
Never gained access where we wanted.
Just glad it dried out a little, or we might still be walking out!
Exciting trip.
We even had a break down.
Finally made it back to "the Ranch" via Mrs. Higgins in the Grand Am!
Apparently, the Gods were angry?

Leonard, Tim sent me this morning and I must give him credit. For some reason, I thought of you. Enjoy!
The Devil wanted a place on earth, Sort of a summer home A place to spend his vacation Wherever he wanted to roam
So he picked out Arizona. A place both wretched and rough. Here the climate was to his liking And the cowboys were hardened and tough.
He dried up the streams in the canyons and ordered no rain to fall He dried up lakes in the valleys, Then baked and scorched it all.
Then over his barren desert He transplanted shrubs from Hell, The cactus, thistle and prickly pear. The climate suited them well.
Now the home was much to his liking But animal life, he had none So he created crawling creatures That all mankind would shun
First he made the rattlesnake With its forked poisonous tongue, Taught it to strike and rattle and how to swallow its young.
Then he made Scorpions and Lizards and the ugly old Horned Toad. He placed spiders of every description Under rocks by the side of the road.
Then he ordered the sun to shine hotter. Hotter and hotter still Until even the cactus wilted And the Horned Toad looked ill.
Then he gazed on his earthly kingdom, As any creator would. He chuckled a little up his sleeve And admitted that it was good.
'Twas summer now and Satan lay By a prickly pear to rest, The sweat rolled off his wealthy brow So he took off his coat and vest.
"By Golly," he finally panted "I did my job too well. I'm going back where I came from Arizona is hotter than HELL"

Yeah, no **** !
Did I mention that I ran, smack-dab into a buckhorn cholla, in the dark. Both knees.
Thankfully, it was a short one, missed Big Jim and the kids!
Dropped my pants and Rich pulled out most of the spines with his Leatherman. (no wisecracks, please) By the next day, I could find the one's that broke off, just dug them out, all the red spots. (sigh) What a rookie!
be patient. More excuses to follow.
Good hunting. LB

Yep Leonard, You done pissed off a higher power and you paid the price for it. You also put your status as a predator hunting guru in jeopardy and the success of the Loudmouth is now in question. You knew the "season" wasn't open. You had to try it anyway.
A promise to skin the next thirty coyotes you kill and donate the procedes to a worthwhile charity might put you in good graces with the Red Gods again. A half dozen Hail Mary's might help too.

Lonny,
That brought out a chuckle on this end!
LB, Don't feel too bad. Last weekend I drove 1100 miles for 1 and 1\2 days of hunting. All for three mangy coyotes. Seems like the more years I call, the tougher it gets. I guessing it's to much competiton.

Yeah, must have?
Did I mention that we didn't make a single(!) stand before 11:00 A.M.? I can't go into some details, but those coyote gods weren't favoring we'uns!
Rich kept talking about "mad dogs and Englishmen".
The Loudmouth called a coyote, the first time I turned it on.

WHAT? Lose my "Guru" status? We never talked about that. Hey, this stuff isn't as easy as it looks. Sweat was in my eyes from the time I woke up. I need to look into sweatbands, next time I go coyote hunting in the desert, in the summer. Face it. It was exactly like mid-July. Kicked my butt!
I used a zippered clothes bag for a pillow, and found out that it was waterproof. Oh goodie!
The sweat from my head pooled into the depression, and I had to keep tipping it, or drown.
But, my face was still waterlogged and wrinkled in the morning. (Rich said it was an inprovement)
All this for a lousy steak? Now you "infer" that I've also lost my status? A bit premature, don't you think?

Hey Lonny, Keep the Loudmouth out of this,It a caller not a miacle worker. I feel that Leonard has plenty of adequate reasons why things ditten't go the way he expected. I know how that works. Been their. Last winter I hunted a swamp from both sides on a Friday and got skunked the next week Thursday the weather cooled a bit and I took a pair of Reds and 2 coons on one end of the swamp and called up 3 but only killed one Red on the other end. I will bet you if Leonard goes back when it gets cooler, he will spank dogs in the same places he already hunted. I have faith in you Leonard!!

Hear that, you circling vultures? Man has faith, believes my alibi's....of which you haven't heard them all; yet.
Ever hear about the rotational effect of the earth? ...on a scorcher?
All kidding aside; the Loudmouth called in a coyote on my very first stand. He was standing about twenty feet from the Loudmouth when the gun went off.
Yes, he suffered severe trama. (it was, in fact, a boy) I don't know, was that first blood, for the Loudmouth?
Good hunting. LB
PS I wonder if ol' Rich has faith, if he wants to go back for a second helping?

Do I see a set up? Despite everything that went wrong Leonard probably killed 25 coyotes that weekend and considered it a wash. I can hear it now. LOL One coyote is not the total body count is it?
Good hunting.

This was never meant to be a promotion for the Loudmouth. I understand the concern. If I had a bundle tied up in this sort of thing, I'd want a "fair and ballanced" report.
But, no. I'm just having a little fun with a personally embarassing situation. What else can I do?
We made a total of perhaps a dozen stands, all in the heat of the day, put on a lot of miles, and spent a considerable amount of time just trying to get off the pavement. It was bewildering. I knew where I wanted to go, but I couldn't get in.
Then, we tried another spot, same results, then we tried a different place and still couldn't actually penetrate into prime stuff. In a word, it was tough.
If I lose my Guru status over this, I'll have to live with the shame.
Good hunting. LB
edit: put another way, I killed everything I saw....except for the dogs, I only petted them. [ September 07, 2003, 10:33 AM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

Well Leonard at least you were 100%. LOL You can’t do any better than that. I don’t think it was you though. It was Rich. He is bad luck. The first time I talked to him on the phone a hailstorm went through in the middle of our conversation and water started coming in my computer room. Right over the computer no less. I was lucky to have caught it when I did.
Isn’t that the way it goes though? You plan a good hunt and then every thing goes to hell. Anyway I hope he burned up all of his bad luck on you. LOL He is probably just getting warmed up though. Hell, I will probably shoot my self in the foot (literally) on my first stand. LOL
Good hunting.
