You miss a coyote. You have a witness. He's usually critical of mistakes.

What do you tell him?
Sun was in your eyes?
Scope's off?
He moved at the last minute?
You didn't have a clear shot?
You were waiting for your partner to shoot?

Or, something more creative? [Smile]

I neeed to know.

I'm going hunting with Master Higgins, shortly.

Good hunting. LB [Smile]

I keep it simple.

Either avoid eye contact and use sign language (the heavy traffic variety). Or that infamous two-word phrase, that sounds like a "beep" on television.

It's easier to handle if you give your reply before your partner has a chance to use the witty little remark he thought up after witnessing your error.

Thta's an easy one, and the guy I used it on told me this past winter that he's use it himself on one occasion or so. We were hunting the Smoky Hills of west central kansas and sitting on the side of this bluff looking down into a small canyon. A hundred yards in front of me was a small stand of cottonwoods with snow around them. Joe was calling and this coyote comes up the side of the hill right at me. I pull up, shoot and miss cleanly. Unsafe downrange conditions forbid a second shot, so we finished out the stand uneventfully.

Joe comes over to me and asked me what happened and why I didn't kill that coyote. I says, "Oh, did you want him dead? You see, Joe, we don't have nearly as many coyote round home as you do here, so we just call 'em up, scare the hell outta them, and run them off so we can call 'em again later. Kinda like catch and release coyote hunting." It was worth a laugh and it got the heat off me.

Rich, himself, has a classic reply.

He says that he sometimes elects to put a bullet hole in the coyote's ear......kinda hard to prove him wrong on that one?

Gotta love a man that creative! [Wink]

Good hunting. LB

edit: I hope that I don't have to turn the tables on him, and use his line?

OK, I've used almost all of those excuses... on one stand... with Jay. He's a hard sell, I don't think he bought any of them. I, however, am easy Leonard, and will absolutely believe anything you tell me. The camera however...

No excuses here, but I do have a little temper problem when it happens.

"That damn trigger is too light!"

"I figured things weren't going to get any better so it was now or never"

"If it wasn't for that frozen stalk of bunch grass deflecting my bullet, that coyote was as good as dead".

A three wire barbwire fence will deflect every bullet that attempts to cross it.

It was just one of those memorable nights. Had a tripple, by three different shooters. Almost unheard of. But, right afterwards, I had an inexplicable miss? I was positive that coyote was out there, dead.

Believe it or not, I walked it back and found a branch about the diameter of my index finger, with a fresh bullet hole in the middle of it! Shredded the branch for two inches in each direction, otherwise, I'd never have noticed it.

Sometimes, you can't see these things, at night; these random obstructions. Makes a decent alibi.

Good hunting. LB

This is an easy one:

@!%!@&*$*!@ grass!

I tend to forget how a little blade of grass will deflect a bullet but I'm learning.

I tend to start the ensuing conversation by taking the offense by loudly asking Why didn't YOU shoot it? Hell, it was right there in front of you for 5 full minutes! I can't belive you didn't see it. GEEZE! I take you to my best places and you MISS shooting at the easiest shot I've seen in years. I waited so long for you to shoot I missed in desperation. I'd swear I got him in the ear though. LOL

If they really start giving me a hard time about missing, finger pointing and Hee Hawing, I tell the guy that I didn't miss and send him on a 300 yard plus wild goose chase guiding him in to where I saw it drop. While he's looking away I light up a cig and walk back to the truck and wait.

A few years ago a seasoned deer hunter wanted to call a coyote. He could not see the coyote so I shot and missed.I told him the miss was because a pin oak leaf caused the little 220 swift bullet to explode. He seemed to buy the lie.

Wiley you caused me to think of my lie because of your blade to grass story.
