Author Topic: Facial Expressions. onecoyote Knows what it's all about Member # 129 posted April 05, 2003 05:56 PM                   I know we have some very experienced coyote callers in this forum, so I think I can ask this and get some answers. Have you ever seen a look (anger, suprise, proud etc) on a coyotes face? If so please explain. Every hair on the back was bristled up and he was showing me his teeth. He was only about 15 feet way when he came into view. She wouldn't go away, for crying out loud. "Go on, get of here", I thought, but she just stood there with this really stupid, confused look on her face. She just kept staring at me and turning her head from left to right. I've also witnessed an adult male posturing to show his domanance, then twist his head in confution when I bark to stop him. I've also seen their eyes bug out of their head when they know they are about to die. Yes, I do think they exibit facial changes. To be honest it is this change that keeps me going. I only notice it on the ones that get really close, and I see it more in their eyes than on their face. I should also mention, that my partner says I get an interesting look on MY face when I spot an incoming coyote. I had called about two minutes and saw a yote coming up the canyon. I lip sqweaked a little and the yote came up on my left side out of the canyon about 25 yards from me. The expression was similar to the cartoon with Wiley right before he gets blown up, one of those sad frowns. He was busted and knew it. No expression whatsoever, while I did the slow motion; his nose about two feet from the end of the barrel. I couldn't believe he stood his ground, and it was pure hell moving that slowly. We had eye contact for what seemed about a minute, but he didn't even gulp. I mean, yeah, he quivered a little when he fell, but that was understandable. Good hunting. Member # 7 posted April 06, 2003 06:41 PM                       I started off this past season by hopwling a group of five to right in front of me. I was in my ghillie and panned from one to the other thru my scope the entire thime they came toward me. I finally settled on whacking the middle coyote and had him dead in my sights. He stopped and just stood there looking through me for the source of all that howling. To this day, I can see very clearly the instant in time when he realized that the one-eyed cedar tree in front of him wasn't. His eyes went from that typical just-doin'-my-own-thing-relaxed look to wide-eyed and dilated. I bet that's what you mean when you say the oh %#&( look, huh? I've had several occasions with both coyotes and bobcats when they come in close, look through you, then make eye contact. Their face undergoes a very distinct change in expression at that point. -------------------- I am only one. But still, I am one. Member # 7 posted April 07, 2003 11:12 AM                       OC- I never said they were smart. How much brains does it take to see a camo'd finger wigglin' and go TO it rather than away? As far as expressions, sure they do. On several occasions, I've seen them doing the, as I said, looking through me kinda thing, then all of a sudden you see their eyes get wider open. In some cases, this is immediately followed by them looking casually to one side or the other and then slowly work their way to about ten yards away, then run like hell. I love it when they do that. If they knew how to whistle, they'd be doing so for sure. In one particular instance, the cat made eye contact, his little amber eyes bulged for a split second then he arched his back and gave me this wicked hiss. We were about ten feet from one another, and I reached up and pulled my hood down to show my face, said "Boo!" at him and he made hay they hey outta there. -------------------- I am only one. Its the HA HA HA look. It comes when you pull up your gun, have a coyote at 20 yards, pull the trigger and hear "CLICK". That sound will haunt you for a long time and its even worse if there is a witness. Funny thing about coyotes, I went back the next day to the same spot, used the same calls and the HA HA HA coyote came back to smile at me one last time. I have seen bobcat eyes bulge out before....all the way out of the sockets. I can hunt at night, so now and then we will get a "between the golden eyes" shot and that's when the above happens. Member # 7 posted April 07, 2003 03:40 PM                       It never fails that when we have a coyote up close, we only seem to be able to focus on one sense at a time. We SEE the coyotes eyes bulge for the "oh ^@&*" look, but have you heard it? "It" is that sudden rushing sound as the coyote sucks a large amount of air up his ass. It only lasts a fraction of a second since it's usually followed closely by a sudden tightening and locking up of the sphincters thereabouts. That sudden increase in internal pressure no doubt makes the coyote's eyes bulge momentarily. Kinda like that slanty eyed smirk they get when the air's going the other way. Which reminds me of a funny that happened during family dinner last night. My 4 y/o daughter lets loose a very commendable, well, uh, you know. Everyone looks at her as she looks sheepishly around the table. "What do you say when you do that?", I asked, fully expecting her to excuse herself. But no. She looks to her left, points at her mother, and say, "Mommy did it." Trained her right good. And she never cracked so much as a smile until the rest of us broke up laughing. Screw the world. The wierdest thing we ever saw was one landed in a shallow creek after I shot him and he wrapped his paws around a root and held himself under water and drowned himself instead of coming up and fighting our dogs.(we had 1 grown & 3 pups) He had an unforgetable expression as he looked at us and us at him while he drowned himself.
