want to do some coyote hunting this year in yuma az while i'm down there dove hunting, anyone suggest an area around yuma.

maybe north of Dome Valley? Dove opener around Yuma is a bad time to try and call coyotes.

I would have to agree with Leonard. Although I was on a pheasant hunt a few years back when the Fish and Game planted the birds and almost as fast as they planted them the coyotes were eating them. I'm not sure who got the most, the coyotes or the hunters. ![[Frown]](frown.gif) I believe that smart coyotes love dove season ( wounded birds = free meals ) ducks make tasty free meals too. Something to think about, ![[Wink]](wink.gif) Good Hunting.

Yep, we have a Lions club pheasant hunt here around the Pixley area and the night before the opener they throw out the birds into crop fields that area farmers give the ok to hunt. Opening morning there's a lot of fat coyotes around.

Lone Howl, that's where I'm talking about.....Pixley.....Maybe ten years ago...been there done that one. By the way, I saw a white coyote on that hunt, only one I ever seen and I've seen a few, Good Hunting.

I'll second the motion not to hunt just before or during the dove opener. I did that a number of years back and was promply busted by an overzealous fish and game puke. He took all my guns, gear and the like and put me under arrest. Said I was hunting too close to a road as an excuse to bust me. He didn't take me in but for awhile I was under arrest. I showed him the fish an game regs showing him I was legal but he refused to listen. It cost me $1400 to fight him in court.
I won the case. The presiding judge decided in my favor and ordered the arresting fish and game officer to "personally" deliver my guns and gear to my home right along with his apology for screwing up and arresting me. Only thing that could have made it better was if he were also ordered to repay my court costs.
Don't hunt for predators anytime near the dove opener!

Early dove season shooting hours end at noon. We take our limit and then scout until after 12. Whenthe dove hunters head for town we start calling. We've never had a problem with Game officers. I talk to everyone of them that I can and pump them for information. All have been co-operative and I've enjoyed the visit and company of several. Do not shoot from , across, or onto a road or railroad, and do not shoot within one quarter mile of an occupied building and you should be fine. Officers consider the shoulder to be part of the road. Get OFF the road.

Rich, what type of calls would you suggest.Know if the oranges groves hold alot of coyotes.
Last year while dove hunting late in the moring had a coyote bolt out of a orange grove right across an open filed. Wish'n I had something other than a shotgun.

Lone Howl, armpit country hehehe, ok. I'd say you're about right too, as I recall I sleep in the back of my truck with my shotgun the night before the hunt. I only hunted there once and I have no idea of ever going back, except for one of them white coyotes maybe, Good Hunting.

To the observers of the white coyotes....I want to separate the fly **** from the pepper? Were these truly white/albino coyotes, or just very pale silver coyotes???? I have seen a pic or two of true albino coyotes, but these are usually eastern coyotes. I have never seen nor heard of a albino coyote in Az.....please elaborate. I suspect to many tall-boys had an effect on onecoyotes observations:) ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I shot a white coyote north of Phoenix a few years ago. It wasn't albino, eyes, lips and toe pads were normal color, but it was absolutely pure white with no markings. I sent the photo to Bruce Kennedy 4 years ago and he posted it on the Shade Tree. Maybe he has a copy or archived it.

Color phases. Normal reds and heavy pales and silver grays. Every once in a while you see something different. I have seen a couple, one was a brindle brown and black, and another appeared to be very dark except for the legs, but I didn't get either one, for purposes of examination.
I saw a coyote killed by my partner, that had at least four different colors, (like a black Collie), ranging from tan to brown, black and white. He still has it on a wall in his den.
I did see a blonde cased pelt in the Mathews and Sons Gun Shop, in Downey. I talked to the guy that killed it, works at the store. I forget his name right now, used to see him at the range occasionally, but he never belonged to a Club. He told me that he killed the blonde out in Boron, behind the Federal Prison. A little lighter in color than Bruce Kennedy's yellow lab, for those that recall.
I saw a very light coyote just north-east of Death Valley, on the Nevada side. I couldn't call it white or even blonde, but he was certainly a "palomino". I never even got a shot off on him, but I watched him through the scope for quite a distance.
White has to be a rare color, other than wolves?
For my money, the silver grays found in the upper part of the Owens Valley are the handsomest.

Az Hunter, the coyote I saw was pure white, ![[Eek!]](eek.gif) I have no idea if it was albino, I know how rare an albino anything is. All I know is I saw a pure white coyote and Lone Howl says they have been seen before in that area. ![[Confused]](confused.gif) I had my rifle with me and I could have shot it, but there is no discharging of rifles in that area plus (the fact it was on the other side of a fence). I did see it really well in my scope, it was white as snow, maybe a couple hundred yards or so out. To be honest, I'm not sure I would have shot it even if I could have. Leonard, I saw Granville at the Victorville gun show Saterday, first time I've seen him in years. He told me he had a quadruple heart bypass showed me the scare and he's only 55, scary huh? He told me his club is still going and invited me to a metting. I told him I ain't going on the other side of those mountians for nothing. The good thing is that he looks ok and he says he feels great. Good Hunting.

That's scary, Danny. I haven't seen Granville in at least three, more like four years? I thought he was older than that? Are they still meeting at the Norwalk Denny's?
Where the heck is Pixley? Sounds like somewhere close to Mayberry or Green Acres. Pettycoat Junction?

BTW Pixley and Hooterville (which is fictitious) are the towns mentioned in the Green Acres tv show.
Wish I had a nickle for everytime I ve heard "where the heck is Pixley?".
I also dont hunt the Pixley pheasant hunt anymore.The tags were about 85 bucks last year, I usually get em free from farmers here but theres to many out of towners that come and party all Friday night and go hunting Sat morning.Lots of close calls and yelling, people getting shot at etc. Pretty sad.The good thing is some of the good ones are looking for someone to take em yote hunting and will pay pretty good for a "guide".Just dont get caught without a guides license ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif) Danny if you ever get brave enough to come out this way again let me know, we can chase the elusive white coyotes together.Ill show you my famous I5 coyote hunting areas,(blindfolded on the way out of course)

Lone Howl, you got 15 good places to hunt coyotes? Dang, I only got one. It's on the Tule Indian rez, just a little south of Porterville hehehe ....Leonard, yes the meetings are still at the same Dennys and I was by myself when I saw that coyote. Pixley is about 15 or 20 miles before you get to Tulare on old 99, Good Hunting.

Thanks for the info, Lone Howl. Never been around Pixley, but I pulled that Green Acres from somewhere, way back! I used to hunt with a guy name of Ronnie Farkas back in the 70s, and his uncle was Alvy Moore who was a Government Agent (something like that?) on that show. I used to watch it if I could find the time. I liked the show, some of that stuff cracked me up. Low brow, but fun entertainment.

I was hunting around that rez. in the 60s, Note: I said around and not on. Lots of cats some longtail ones too, a few fox and some coyotes. Lone Howl, Poterville is a great place to live. I'm sure you know where the Pondarosa is on top of the mountian, I worked at a pack station up there in 71 and 72. Thats where I called in a double on bears, first ones I ever called in. Great hunting and fishing country up there, Good Hunting.

Dang Onecoyote, you been around!
That rez does have a lot of animals in and around it.TONS of bobcats.I hunt around Pine Flat and California Hot Springs for bobs.LOTS of bear up in this mountain range.A friend of mine has a son that guides for bear up here, gets about 40-50 a year with dogs.
Yep, been around the Ponderosa a bunch.
That rez is downright spooky sometimes,I could tell some stories but I doubt anyone would believe me!
I also hunt up in Balch Park.
